Roger Christian recently confirmed rumours of digital versions becoming available in November 2014.  It's possible these will be the original versions.

 When/where was this?

Last week's episode of Rebel Force Radio.

It would be nice to own the OUT on Blu-Ray, but I don't see the point when Harmy's Despecialized Editions are on the internet. But to each his own I suppose.

So you're saying that you see no benefit in upgrading a recreation (which by necessity will never quite be ideal) based on very low quality sources with a proper restoration? That's... odd.

Harmy is updating his projects and I with patients the Despecialized Editions will be just as good as the Blu-Rays. Plus with ANH:R already out and ESB hopefully coming soon I would never watch the unaltered version of STAR WARS and ESB again.

Do...you not understand that that's what we're talking about? An official blu-ray release of the original unaltered trilogy?

ANH:R is better......And with what I've seen of ESB:R that is far better too. Have you seen the Yoda lip synching? I'm just saying don't shit your pants for no reason.

But you're missing the point of the whole site, which is to hopefully spark enough interest in an official release of the unaltered version of the films that someone in the higher-ups greenlights the project.

There are two main reasons for this, and one is so that people who want to watch the original, unaltered films (which is the majority of the people on this board) can do so with an official, professionally-restored release in high definition, hopefully from scans of the original negatives, like they deserve to be able to do (and like the film deserves to be released), without having to support revisionism by purchasing the "specialized" versions that have replaced the original versions in order to more-or-less legally download the fan edits.

On a larger scale, it's also about calling attention to the revisionist history thing. If Lucas wants to edit his films with every new release, he has that right, but what he doesn't have the right to do is to erase a piece of what has become cinematic and cultural history, and he has done this by making the once Special Editions into the now Only Editions and refusing to entertain the idea of releasing the un-specialized versions that made Star Wars such a part of our global culture. This is a much broader issue than just fans of Star Wars who want to see the movies like they saw them as children; in fact, there are several people who post here that aren't necessarily fans of Star Wars, but who disagree with Lucas' willful destruction of cinematic and cultural history, even Lucas himself is against it except when it comes to his own films.

It's all about giving Star Wars the care and attention-to-detail it deserves as a piece of cultural history, and even though we fans are the only ones who seem to be willing to do that right now, it should not come down to the fans to be the keepers of the flame, especially not with a franchise as massive as Star Wars, the responsibility should not fall to us to give Star Wars the restoration it deserves or to right the wrongs or correct the errors left by previous edits. Harmy and Adywan (and many other amazing fan editors, even Frink) are doing incredible work, but they'll be the first to tell you (as Harmy already has) that they would be ecstatic if their work was replaced by official versions done with the same amount of care and attention to detail.

Perhaps I'm not as attached to the comics as the hardcore fans so I just see the remote control aspect as a logical extension of the technology of the suit coupled with the modern world as distinct from the futurism of the early 1960's.

The characters are played with such gusto that the CGI, which is largely invisible to me if a bit wonky in places, only becomes a major issue during the ubiquitous boss fight scenes. These appear in practically every superhero film deflating all character development and turning the films into the rarely fun experience of watching someone else complete a computer game.Thor 2 had a riverside romantic scene in a futuristic decorative city with Nat Portman, a functioning male actor and a script that didn't suck (see it can be done).

Remote controlled armour is hardly a new thing for Iron Man.

The Official Help Tyrphanax Graduate Thread
Time

Hey everyone.

Sorry to dredge this back up, but I must thank all of you who participated in my little survey for their submissions. I know it's a bit late, but I've been settling back into everyday life after returning from Arizona.

Thanks to you guys and everyone else who replied to it, I was able to gather sixty-six responses by the time it was due, and an additional seven since then, giving a total of seventy-three responses, far more than I expected and more than enough (even though you can never really have too much data) to prove my points.

Also thanks to you and the data you provided me, I was able to secure a lovely grade of A (97/100) on my paper, which certainly didn't hurt me graduating summa cum laude from Arizona State University on the 15th of May.

Just in case you folks are interested, here's a link to the data from all 73 results in pretty graph and chart formats, and here is a link to my full paper in PDF format.

Again, thank you all for participating in my escape from higher education. I truly could not have crossed that last hurdle without your help.

Harmy's work is excellent and the next best thing we have to the genuine article at the moment. But it is not perfect and in no way a replacement for the real thing.

Yeah, it's still not about fans being able to make something nearly as good as an official OOT, it's about them needing to release it and stop with the revisionist history that's going on.

The Phantom Menace 15th Anniversary
Time

Jesus. Fifteen years... that just blows my mind.

I was... eight or nine at the time. I had really only just discovered Star Wars a couple years earlier, actually. I remember being really excited about it; I remember the Pepsi products with the characters, I remember the magazines, I remember the toys, I remember the joint KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut (remember when Pizza Hut was a place you went to sit down and eat at?) promotions with the cups with the character toppers (I still have both toppers, but only one cup), I remember checking out info for the movie on the burgeoning internet, I remember the shampoo bottles, even. The hype was huge, and I was just running off the hype for the SEs that had just come out.

I'm not sure how long after release I saw the film, but I remember it was really neat to me. I remember for some reason being in a theater and seeing the part where they attack the droids in the hanger, and the one droid's legs keep walking after it's cut in half. I'm pretty sure I really enjoyed it.

It wasn't until much later that I started to learn that not only that other people didn't like it. I was shocked; how could anyone not like something Star Wars? I chalked it up to them being dumb. But I also thought the Special Editions were great at the time, so what did I know. I was a prequel apologist for a long time, and I really bought into the Special Edition hype, in fact, it was the first copies of the film I got and the only one I had until Tobar introduced me to OT.com and I had my eyes opened to how bad the PT and the SEs were.

What always gets me is the arguments I hear from current prequel apologists: "Well you liked it when you were a kid, you're just following the crowd of old crusty cynics who don't like anything now", which, to me, is a ridiculous argument. My view of the prequels has changed as I've aged, yes, and I won't deny that I've learned more about the flaws of the PT, but I've also learned a lot about all the flaws of the OT as well; however, I can't go back and enjoy the PT the way I did when I was nine like I can go back and enjoy the OT the same way I did when I was five or six. Binary Sunset still gives me chills every time I hear it to this day, I can't say the same about anything in the PT.

Anyway, that got a bit wordy, but I felt it needed to be said.

What is the worst line in the Prequel Trilogy?

KilroyMcFadden said:

Something in Sith where they used President George Bush's "If you aren't for me, you are against me" thing, only instead of just outright quoting, they chose to replace it with some really awkward wording, or as I like to call it, "Normal PT dialog."

"If you're not with me, then YOU'RE MY ENEMY!"

Ugh. Utter shit.

On the previous subject of Jar-Jar, he's actually ignorable. He says dumb crap, and you expect it, and you can ignore it; he gets too much screen time, yes, but really not that much, and none of his lines are pivotal, so you can just safely ignore him.

When it's a main character, though, you can't ignore it; they have "important" dialogue that you need to hear. When Anakin just emits a torrent of verbal diarrhea every third line, you have to just sit there and listen to it. When Ewan flubs that younglings line, it takes you right out of the film. It's just awful.

When the Death Star fires at the MonCalamari ship, it always bothered me that the beam didn't just punch right through like it was made of paper and keep going.  It can destroy a whole planet, so a ship shouldn't have stopped it...  Maybe it could even take out another ship(s) in the background.

This is a good one. I've always thought the same, myself.

I believe the official explanation is that the second Death Star had a variable energy output so they could dial it down to destroy a ship, or dial it up to destroy a planet.

What is the worst line in the Prequel Trilogy?
Time

I'm sure we've discussed this before, but I was inspired by this Reddit post to see what we all thought was the absolute worst line of dialogue in the Prequels.

For me, I think it's Ewan's complete flubbing of the "Killing... YOUNGLINGS!" line. Mostly because he managed to act quite well throughout the films, and flubbing that line seemed really uncharacteristic of his performance. I would expect it from Hayden for instance, but it just took me right out to hear it from Ewan.

I think a close second would be the entire fireplace scene from AOTC. Boy that was garbage. "I wish I could wish away my feelings..." "we live in a real world, Anakin; come back to it..." ugh.

What are your nominations?

I've always felt like lightsabers are useless weapons for none force users. Blasters would be better for them. Think about how no one uses swords anymore. The difference being that lightsabers can block blaster beams, but only Jedi have the sensitivity to actually do that.

Also, when lightsabers used to be heavy, it would not be advantageous for non Jedi to use them in a duel or otherwise.

 This I agree with.
