However, I think specifically in the case of James Bond, because is such an icon and total embodiment of society’s ideas of masculinity that I think it would be very interesting to see this character in particular made into a woman. It would be so counter to what Bond is that it would be a truly interesting thing to see and have a conversation about.

I get where you’re coming from here, but my argument is that when you alter one of a character’s most defining traits, you automatically create a new character. So by the very act of switching Bond’s sex, you end up with a character that’s Bond-in-name-only. Kinda like Godzilla '98.

The reaction to the most male oriented franchise being suddenly headlined by a woman would be a truly fascinating thing. It’s not about cheap gimmicks or anything like that.

Just to be “that guy” but it kinda does come off as a gimmick to get a reaction to sell tickets from my point of view, haha. You’re obviously genuine about exploring the character archetype in the female form, but I just think that it changes the character too much for it to remain Bond, and so to me it can only come off as selling a different candy in my favourite candy’s wrapper.

Besides, like you said, we can just look at Ghostbusters and know what the reaction would be, and they even have the benefit of being all-new characters. A larger franchise with the main focus on one character and his archetype would probably utterly self-destruct in a very ugly way with a change that polarizing.

I’m sure other established franchises (like Bond) are watching what’s going on with Ghostbusters right now and taking notes.

Honestly I’m getting kind of tired of crossovers. I’d rather Bond not be the nth franchise to try to be the MCU.

That one was mostly a joke, haha. And I agree, but you know how Hollywood and “universes” are now. Everything’s gotta be part of some kinda universe franchise now.

If they made a movie about Tombraider with a male Laura Croft I would imagine that that franchise’s fans would have an equally WTF reaction.

This is pretty much my point exactly. And they basically did make a male Lara Croft game, they just made it a new character and named him Nathan Drake. Just like Lara was kinda a female Indiana Jones (and with her reboot, the parallels are even moreso). Which is perfectly alright with me, nothing wrong with basing a character on an established character, but we can do better than just a gender swap.

What is your personal canon?
Time

DominicCobb said:

The concept of personal canon is such a weird and intangible thing to me. Do you guys really see all these things fit together when you consume these movies/TV shows/comics/etc.? Or is it just simply you compiling what bits of Star Wars content you like and think are worthy of existing (for lack of a better term)? Or is it picking the things you think make sense together and should be things that happened in this universe?

Going off the last one is a tricky one. So many of these things contradict each other or are so different in tone/characterization or what have you that it’s hard to put them all in the context of one another. For example, some of my absolute favorite Star Wars content is the original Marvel run of comics (and the Goodwin/Williamson strip), but I find a lot of that very hard to reconcile with the world established in the films. Similarly, as much as I loved the PT as a kid, I’ve spent about the last decade coming to terms with the fact that it just does not fit at all with the OT (fan edits are an effort to fix this, but can they ever really?).

Anyway, point is, hard for me to genuinely come up with a “personal canon” in the typical sense of the world (what I view as the ‘history of the Star Wars universe’). I could list the Star Wars stuff that I like but I don’t know, feel like that’s kind of boring?

May do it later anyway.

I will say I totally understand people with multiple canons. It’s definitely a different experience watching the original film as just a standalone feature in comparison to watching it in the larger context of the OT (on that note, I’ve tried numerous times to watch it in the context of the PT but it just doesn’t work).

Yeah this is kinda what I was trying to convey in my post. I get the idea of a personal canon, because there are a lot of things that are annoyingly officially canon in Star Wars, but it seems weird to be reading a book or something and get to a part where you’re like “Okay that didn’t happen in my canon”

Except Boba Fett. I just assume they killed the kid off between Clones and Empire and a real Mandalorian took over. =P

But if you’re making a film where you’ve skewed the main character to the point where it’s no longer a “true James Bond film” what’s the point of making the character James Bond?

A character is a character because they have certain traits and motivations (and this includes things like gender and nationality and down to taste in breakfast foods), the same as I am my own person and you are yours. But once you start tweaking big tentpole character traits, the character ceases to be what they were, and you end up with a new character entirely. Ergo making James Bond a female means that the character is not James Bond anymore, and so you cheapen what could be a decent female-driven action spy film by trying to piggyback it onto the established Bond name. It’s like clickbait or some other questionable practise to drive traffic to your product.

Plus you lose the chance at cool crossovers in the future.

(for the record the new Ghostbusters movie is going to suck because it looks like a terrible film, and it would be just as bad if they kept the same movie and swapped the original cast in)

[fill in the blank] Just Died!

Muhammad Ali - 74

He was placed on life support earlier today due to respiratory issues due to his advanced Parkinson’s disease, by which time they were making funerary arrangements, in my home state, of all places.

Ali was an incredible boxer and seemed like a decent man. He definitely deserved to be called the Greatest of All Time. I wasn’t around for his heyday, but I remember him lighting the Olympic torch in '96 and how much his demeanor at the time reminded me of my grandfather who was stricken with Alzheimer’s, and to be quite honest, I’m surprised he made it this long.

Still waiting for the first Bond Boy. JB is obviously an omnisexual horndog who swings every way. Wonder when they’ll have the guts to show it.

I don’t think they ever will. That would be incredibly out of character. Bond clearly has extremely high standards since he’s only ever with the most attractive women.

I’m wondering if it wasn’t sarcasm.

I’m guessing your name is Mark.

Nah. I don’t Gary Stu

What?

I think it’s the male version of a Mary Sue, based on the way it sounds.

I know what Gary Stu is, I just have no idea how it relates to the previous quote.

Because of the Mark character in the original post, Quazz was accusing Hobo of Gary Stuism.

The Place to Go for Emotional Support

Got on the phone today and found a place which would take my insurance, and their price is good.

Good. Go there. As soon as you can.

Can therapy really help with this? I don’t know anymore.

Like Chewie said, and I’ve said before, it won’t be an instant overnight thing and it will never be a “cure”, but you will learn how to manage it and you can be happy as long stick with it and not give up. Do you really have anything to lose by trying, compared to how you feel by putting it off?

Like Bingo suggests, medication may help, but it may be a process between you and your therapist to find the right thing for you.

Keep pushing. Never stop moving. You can do this.

I don’t believe the movie is in any serious trouble. The same rumor mills had a field day when Harrison Ford was injured on the set of TFA.

Yeah. Like you said before, what movie doesn’t have reshoots? It’s a common thing, but it looks exciting in the headlines.

As long as they’re not doing them to stick a Jedi in, I’m fine. =P

It’s not stupid. It’s just how it works. You know it’s not a rational thing, and yet you are compulsively driven to it. It’s hard for us “normal” people (I only have some understanding of it because of my brother) to understand why you can’t just put it down or tune it out or walk away, but you just can’t. I said Chewie’s advice was sound, which it is, but a lot of times it’s not possible without help.

A lot of times there’s a feeling that horrible consequences will occur if certain actions aren’t undertaken perfectly. A not-uncommon one is that a family member will die or a meteor will strike the earth if you don’t turn the lights off “properly” or if you don’t walk through a doorway in the “correct” way. There are intrusive thoughts that can only be “controlled” when rituals are properly executed.

We all have goofy rituals and superstitions, but the thing is that most of us can say "okay, that’s enough) and walk away. People with OCD can’t do that, though. The difference between my compulsion to rotate the point of a pen on my desk away from me (just in case it decides to grow a rocket and embed itself in my sternum) or to reveal 100% of the map in a video game and my brother’s compulsion to put something in the fridge the right way is that I don’t have to do it whereas he feels like he has to, to an obsessive degree wherein he’ll put the sour cream in the fridge, take it out, put it back in, and repeat until it feels “right”. He knows it’s not a necessary or rational thing to do, but he lacks the the ability we have to just stop. It’s a way for him to control his environment.

For Mike here it seems like he has intrusive thoughts about religion (not uncommon either, moral issues are often a big trigger for OCD) and the only way he can calm them is to delve into research about the issues. It’s not even a religious thing and has nothing to do with whether it’s right or wrong or whatever, this is just how his OCD has manifested at this time. If he were to deny the compulsion to delve into internet discussions or research on the topics, I’m sure the intrusive thoughts would be an even more unbearable buzzing in his head, which is why he needs to find a professional who can really help him understand this and walk him through the process of identifying his triggers and controlling them.

Someone is posting the first draft of the Jurassic Park script on Facebook!
Time

A guy named Derrick Davis has gotten hold of Michael Crichton’s “revised first draft” of the Jurassic Park script, dated 01/19/91. There have been various versions of rewrites of the script floating around before now, but to my knowledge, this is the first ever Crichton draft found, which makes it very notable.

There are eight pages up currently with a few more promised each day. It’s really exciting to see how it follows the book a little more closely, and just exciting period as a dinosaur-obsessed person who’s first movie in a theater was probably Jurassic Park.

Check it out!

EDIT: I’m going to be rehosting these on Imgur as I get them from Facebook. Figure it’s a good idea to save them for posterity anyway. Feel free to kick me if I fall behind on updates.

Wait a minute…so one of the comments by the execs was that it didnt feel like Star Wars; that it felt like…a war movie.

Everyone in the galaxy knew this was the plan except this one guy.

That’s weird and also dumb. The whole idea was for it to be a war movie, that’s why they brought all the war movie people in. That’s why everyone was excited for it.

tbh I got more of a Star Wars feel from the trailer than I did a Saving Private Ryan/Black Hawk Down feel, so I dunno what the issue is.
