The Terminator (1984) - Original Theatrical Mono Preservation (Released)
Time

You guys maaaay wanna take a look at this…

http://pitchfork.com/news/63451-the-terminator-soundtrack-getting-vinyl-reissue/

“The soundtrack was remastered from the original tapes and sequenced for the first time in the order Fiedel originally intended.”

Would you all agree that they now have NO EXCUSE for not being able to give us a proper remastered original mono mix? Cuz if these are the original tapes, I see no reason why they can’t remaster it into a proper stero/DTS/5.1/17.1/whatever mix.

Info: a thread for fan-made Music Videos...
Time

I’ve been saving youtube videos for at least 7-8 years now. I think maybe a year or 2 after I discovered youtube (roughly 2006, maybe 2005), I then realized I needed to have a way to save these videos since some that I loved kept getting taken down. Some are back now (thankfully) but I felt upset for losing them.

I also make music videos just for fun. One was actually a shot-by-shot remake of one that I saw and was lost (though I put a bit of my own ideas in there). Now that video is back, but mine is gone lol. Anyway, I got the idea from this underground music scene called “New-Retrowave” that basically is a total 80’s synth tribute. I’ve actually been looking for this kinda music my entire life (80’s baby here), and almost 5 years ago I found it, and it feels so good to be home again.

So anyway, the music videos that people make with this music always has a lot of 80’s movie footage set to it. And because Miami Vice is one of the most popular 80’s tv shows, a lot of videos have footage from the show. So a year or 2 ago I decided to make my contribution:

The Terminator (1984) - Original Theatrical Mono Preservation (Released)
Time

Ugh, just when I thought I could finally close the book on this Terminator sound mix ordeal lol. Just went and checked my go-to version of T1 (a certain version someone here made for us mono-mix lovers) and checked the scene in question. It’s the first link.

I’ve also seen clips of T1 where the picture was much brighter. I think it was mostly BTS specials that were showing some of the film. Would love to know the story on that one.

I swear, this whole ordeal is making me wanna do something I did with “Dawn of the Dead” when I was 16. I bought every VHS release off ebay, juss trying to find the differences (Joke’s on me, had I waited 4 years I could’ve gotten all 3 versions in the 4-disc DVD set, lol). Now I wanna buy every VHS version of T1, and heck maybe venture out into laserdisc as well. Heck, lately I’ve been buying a lot of the older “1st run DVDs” of my favorite movies before they were “remastered” (ie: tampered with).

My guess it was elements either lost or subtly heard in the standard mono that somehow reintroduced themselves on the mono track included on the MGM DVDs, either by accident or design. If you want a somewhat closer examination I shared two youtube videos below of the police station massacre. First has the standard mono, second has the MGM mono. Both are mostly identical but you hear subtle differences like the sound of the emergency lights coming on when the powers cut.

Neither link worked for me.

Info & Discussion: Fullscreen Laserdisc / DVD Preservations
Time

After being bitterly disappointed with the widescreen version of Top Gun (20th anniversary remaster), I went and bought the first DVD version that has both widescreen and ‘fullscreen’ (open matte). The VHS open matte version is the version I grew up on, and it’s the only way I will watch it. SD quality be damned. Same goes for Terminator 2.

The Godfather Saga - HD Restoration (Released)
Time

Slightly OT. A few years ago I was watching the Epic and while I don’t remember which channel, I remember there was roughly 15 minutes devoted to flashbacks of parts 1 and 2 before we got to part 3. The picture quality of this entire sequence was awful, but one thing was important. To jump from one scene to the next, there were various close-up shots of Al Pacino as we see him at the end of part 2 (gray hair and aged lines) in various states of duress. A lot of reaction shots of him as we went through the first 2 films in 15 minutes. One of which was him putting his face in his hands.

I have never seen these shots anywhere else, nor heard anyone talk about it. So can anyone inform me on what the heck it was that I saw? lol

Terminator 2: 80's synth edition/No social commentary edition (title pending) (Released)
Time

Hi everyone, been a while I know. Work is what it is. Anyway, I’ve started messing around with the color, horribly lol. Arnold’s steel metal blue is now a ghostly/ghostly gray. I’ll work on that later but for now just check out the song I’m using for the T-800’s arrival:

Edit Apparently in some of the trailers, sometimes the night scenes had this same purple timing problem:

Superman - The Richard Donner Vision - A Fan Edit by Fran Garcia (Released)
Time

I was gonna nitpick the color grading, as I feel the contrast was too high, but the last clip of depowered Supes calling out to his father saved it lol. Don’t know how Thau dropped the ball on that one. Especially since over the past 9 years I must’ve seen at least 10 different fan edits where the editor fixed this problem themselves with no budget to speak of.

Info Wanted: "The Mask" Workprint Composite? has anyone done / made this?
Time

I've only watched the workprint once, but if I recall, it had alternate takes with the same dialogue. If I'm right, that would mean the editor taking on this project would have to take a little liberties and decide which one he/she likes better, hehe.

Also, a double set of this along with the tv footage put back into Ace Ventura would be the tits.

OK checked out the the Chace audio mix of T1 thanks to Mr. B!

It's clearly a totally different mix from the mono mix AND the ulterior 5.1 remix.

The voices are placed way clearer than on the original mono, and for example in the police precinct massacre scene, you can hear everything the cops scream in the background and understand all the words they are saying.

I think they took the stems and repurposed them to try to make for a better mix. It sounds artificial in some instances. Stems are for example: Voices / Sounds Effects / Music / Foley.

it has a stereo feel but sounds like the original mix, only in stereo. It's not as finished as the original mono track, but it still is very interesting to hear as an alternate mix.

It's an awesome find.

Now all we need is to sync it and pitch it back to the current Blu-ray master ;)

Dude. Seriously. Get in touch with someone either here or on fanedit.org who does that sorta thing and get it up on either the spleen or blutorrents STAT. T1 is my 2nd favorite movie of all time. I NEED to hear this audio mix.

Heck, just upload the audio file and I'll sync it up to my digital file of my vhs copy myself :D

Ok, here's a 4th edit on the "terminator repowered scene". I'm still most likely gonna go with the first version, but I thought I'd share this anyway:
