//RETURNING TO JEDI\\: NTSC & PAL DVD
Time
Looking very good Say, when you're all done with this, do you think an NTSC conversion of this and "Building Empire" might be possible? (running at the correct speed). I've held off on these because it's a PAL only release so far, but I understand that "Building Empire" was brilliant, and I'd love to have a NTSC version for us in the States! Thanks for all of your hard work on this, though

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
All apologies for getting off-thread.

Hey, don't apologize- I too was much more impressed with this clip than with your opening (although you did some interesting stuff there). I'll tell you what I liked about that clip- I loved the way that you cut away from the scene, and you cut back to the Jedi being chopped down. This is more dramatically effective, and as mentioned, it makes it seem as though there was a fight BEFORE he started chopping down Jedi. Good idea! Also nice was of course your omission of most of Palpatine's faces and his ridiculous CG stunt. And I liked the way that Mace doesn't mince words any more. Obviously the music needs some work, but more specifically, I don't know about starting the force lightning offscreen. It doesn't seem quite as dramatic as seeing him actually do it. I'd also put in a few more close-ups of Anakin, especially a longer shot of Anakin looking in wonder at Palpatine's power. (See, in my Ep. II all of the force lightning is edited out. This is the first time we see it in the saga. I'm not sure if that would affect your cut, though).

The only other thing I'm not sure about is how Anakin watches a great deal of the saber battle. Now, I understand the reason you did this (because you used the Anakin landing sequence earlier so that you could cut away from the Palpatine confrontation. Now, you have no choice but to use a shot to break up the two halves of the Windu/Palpatine battle- otherwise you have a skip in the action. I'd still see if there was a way around that, though.

Say- the general idea of that clip was very good, though. I think the lack of emotion can be solved with an effective music cue and more shots of Anakin. I actually think I can use both ideas- I can do the dream as I'd envisioned, and then I can cut the sequence your way to imply that he is indeed revealing his true identity. I just recently found a shot perfect for the Ep. III dream, though, so I think that'll work. Perhaps I can use your cut as a base for mine when I get to it in a few months (obviously, there are some music things I'll do differently, as well as the Anakin dubbing, the purple saber rotoscoping, and etc.), but it seems like you also have ambition to make the prequels great. Welcome to the club, darkhelmet!

--------------------------

OK, guys- I finally got around to writing the two Lama-Su scenes for Nanner Split to record. This was actually really fun (especially the second scene) because I could make him say anything that came into my head. Here's some of it:

Lama-Su: But I’m sure he would have been proud of the army we’ve built for him.

Kenobi: The army?

Lama-Su: You amuse me, Kenobi. (slow zoom). You came to inspect the clones, did you not? Your army of slaves?

Ominous motif begins. Close-up of Obi-Wan (realizing that something's really fishy here). Close-up of Lama-Su.

Kenobi: Yes ,yes (he decides to play along). Tell me, Prime Minister, when my master first contacted you, did he say who it was for?

Lama-Su: Of course he did. This army is for the Republic. (close-up of Kenobi).

Lama-Su: (laugh) Our noxious atmosphere must have dulled your senses on the way in, my friend. The sensation will soon pass away. Come, come. I will show you the clones at once.

Obi-Wan follows in silence.

You see, I'm able to develop his character however I want. It gets better in scene 2, as I'm able to talk about anything and everything- how clones aren't moral but they're doing it anyway, about how Fett was the last Mandalorian, about how Fett kept a natural son for himself and the mother is unknown. This is one of the most fun parts of doing this edit- being able to reveal all this character information that wasn't written in previously.

OK- here's the thing I need to figure out before I send him the lines. I've realized that since I'm dubbing Lama-Su, I've found a way through a couple of dialogue edits to actually change Jango Fett's name to whatever I want. I don't know why this didn't occur to me before, and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that "Jango" is kind of ridiculous. But what should his name be?

Jim Fett?
Mark Fett?
Robert Fett?

I'd just like a return to the normal OT type names, like Luke, Ben, and Han. I'm not so good with names, so I'd like some suggestions

Info: The LID Project: Laserdisc is dead.
Time
Unfortunately, none of us can add the three original 6-track mixes, which Lucasfilm has STILL not released; that's really what we all want to go with the OOT, particularly the fabled 70mm mix. But I would like subtitles in many languages. I'd like a choice of many audio mixes, and a good isolated score. Perhaps a text commentary with trivia, as they did on the Star Trek DVD's?

I would love to see not only the lost cut, but also "Star Wars: The Temp track edition with the different crawl". That stuff would be incredible to see. Obviously not going to happen, though; there isn't really a market for that as much.

What we're the promising/interesting fan edit projects which we're proposed? I was looking forward to the foreign language WWII audio track for ANH, and someone was going to cut the PT (as flashbacks) into the OT.

I agree- I was really looking forward to the WWII edit. Know, though, that the "Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side" film will come out on DVD this September (because at that point, I'll be able to rip the logos in the highest quality from the OOT DVDs. Without saying too much, I honestly think you'll love Episode II after seeing this film. Not only is the acting a radical departure from the original, with some new voice actors, but the CGI work has been seriously changed to be more real. I really can't wait for you guys to see it. So at least this project isn't going by the wayside- I'm sure of that.

Guys- we're all flapping our gums for nothing until we find out more about this release. If they screwed up the color/contrast, then there's obviously a problem. But if it's just a straight transfer of the trilogy, obviously it'll beat an LD cap.

That having been said, I support the XO project all the way; what harm can it be? The more versions, the better. At least the revised opening crawl from 1981 will be preserved; that isn't supposed to be on the official release.

Anyhow, our problem here is that we want immediate answers when the real answer comes in September. Nothing is certain until then. I'm a little disappointed that the release we've all been waiting for is bringing some of us into the juvenile poster category. I'm thrilled that this is being released, with original colors, impact flashes, sabers, correctly-mixed music, and so on. To me, it's the ultimate correction of the 2004 DVD's. In that way, I'm actually REALLY glad that they're not putting any effort into restoring it to the quality of the 2004 DVD's, with Lowry Digital. Because we all know how that turned out.

I'm really looking forward to putting a PCM track on this DVD when it comes out, though. I really can't wait.

Help: Ideas Wanted for... "Episode 3" or "What Convinced Me To Try a Re-edit"
Time
I agree that this is some very interesting stuff you've done here, darkhelmet. I would definitely not cut the saber duel, however; this is completely salvagable. The one thing I would watch out for is multiple music tracks playing at once. I like your music from the beginning of Empire, but several times the original music comes through on the soundtrack, which is distracting. But I loved how you cut the battle footage and removed the stupidity (buzz droids and so on). Nice work.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
Hi, folks. I still can't believe that Lucasfilm is releasing the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy. This is ALL THE MORE REASON to finish this edit. Before, there weren't any official releases with the original logo, stereo sound, and so on...and now there will be. This edit was already meant to fit with the original versions, and now that they are being released in much the same format as mine will be, the quality will be consistent and the completed set will be wonderful.

However, this announcement means that I am definitively setting the release date for Shroud of the Dark Side in September of this year. That way, I will be able to purchase the original movie on DVD and rip the logos for complete consistency and great quality. The film will be practically done this summer, I'll be working on subtitles, extras, and such, and come September, I'll just be able to plug in the opening and begin encoding for DVD.

The dubbing for Anakin is practically done- I have completed all the scenes except the conversation with Watto and the conversation with 3PO/Owen. I'm also going to rerecord the "departure from naboo" scene, as that was a bad recording day for me (the takes didn't come out well). Know, though, that I'm archiving all of this material should I ever need any of it for any reason (documentary, an alternate take for a future version, a 5.1 mix, etc.). All of the original ADR recordings will go into storage untouched.

A trailer, huh? I didn't even think about a trailer! That'll be fun!

It will be! I'm thinking of doing it in the classic style, with a narrator and the actor's names appearing on the screen along with their close-ups. "Starring EWAN MCGREGOR", "HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN", and so on.

"...At least Phantom Menace had some structure to it. However, this editing has been great because now, I really understand the deeper reasons as to why it was poorly done."

Interesting. I would like to hear more!

Well, I realised that the lousy cinematography had a lot to do with it. All of the subjects are pretty much placed in the center of the screen, which is bad style. The music was hacked, and the colors were artificial looking. Also, the very fact that there was so little chemistry or interaction between the leads that I was literally able to rerecord all of the lines and insert them without a hitch is really sad.

Very good stuff, but that use of the 'Mars' track during the battle. It's such a famous piece of music in it's own right it seemed very out of place hearing it in a Star Wars film to me. In the same way I wouldn't expect to hear a Beethoven track.

You know what, that's a very good point. I was afraid someone was going to say that! This will probably be jarring to people the first time they hear it. Then again, so will the snippets of "Raiders" music, for some people. Everyone has a different musical background, and therefore this edit will hit different people in different ways; some will be thrilled the first time, and some might be utterly distracted by music that is very familiar to them. I like this piece so much, though, that I'm reluctant to remove it. Because by the second viewing, or the third viewing, people will be used to the better version, and it seems a shame to remove it because it's so famous. Very good point, though.

Talk to you guys soon- I still can't believe the great news!

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Congratulations to everyone that signed the petition and possibly influenced Lucas to make this decision. I just can't believe the news- I thought for sure it was a joke at first. Needless to say, OT.com has grown far beyond the three original movies in its edits, technical discussion, and preservation of other Star Wars material. All this announcement means is hopefully that we'll have great source material to work with. Obviously, as this is a bare bones release, there's a lot that can still be done (a mono mix and original PCM stereo version, for example).

All I have to say is this: Lucas is a shrewd businessman. If he had told us he was going to release the OOT on DVD to begin with, his Special Edition sales would have suffered- big time. I'm just glad that I didn't buy the DVD's until the real deal was released.

Long live the original Star Wars trilogy.

I think the new soldiers could be introduced by Wat Tambor. His playing with his knob* mid sentence has always bothered me. I'd love to see that replaced.

Ha ha! Actually, not only did his playing with the knob irritate me, that whole CG character irritated me (along with the two others, like the one with the horizontally crushed head). I actually cut all of their close-ups with dialogue. Now, the scene is basically Dooku laying out his battle plan, with Nute speaking up occasionally. This is really the introduction of Dooku, and the scene plays that way.

Have you tried any footage from David Lynchs' Dune? There might be some more alternate takes to use.

I'm still looking around for a copy of the David Lynch Dune; I haven't gotten a hold of it yet, though. And I agree that Mace's blue saber on that shot would be really effective.

Sure, we can call it something like that. We can call it whatever we want after I figure out a way to make the shots work

They all blend nicely I think. Can't wait to see the whole movie (and the new Coruscant too ).

Thanks! The new music is "Mars", the first piece of Gustav Holst's classic suite, "The Planets". It sounds like Star Wars music, and it was used in the temp track for the original Star Wars, so it seems appropriate that it should come in again for this movie. And yes, most of the new shots in that clip were from "Dune", except the explosion, which I pulled from Lawrence of Arabia.

I agree with everyone saying that there should be more Star Wars material in this sequence, because if you think about it, that whole battle in that clip didn't have ANY elements from AOTC at all. I will definitely splice in the shot of Mace charging, and if I can figure out how, I will rotoscope saber and do blaster shots (or at the very least, those white/purple impact flashes typical of SW). The thing is, it's a lot easier to rerotoscope an existing saber than it is to create a new blade. Gee, I wish we had a special effects artist to do the Jedi Analysis Robot composite, the two sunset/dusk scenes on Tatooine, and FX work on this Dune footage. It would make things go much more quickly.

Ha ha!- that's something I can't reveal yet. Pretty soon, I need to create a trailer, and you'll hear the new voice in that trailer. Basically, it's a lot lower, not whiny or needy, confident/ambitious...you get the picture. Listening to the recordings, I can definitely picture it turning into James Earl Jone's voice, whereas I just can't with Hayden.

Thank you. Looking at it as a fan of the original Star Wars trilogy, this finished movie will be my dream come true as well. I was so disappointed with AOTC- I actually thought it was the worst of all 6 films. At least Phantom Menace had some structure to it. However, this editing has been great because now, I really understand the deeper reasons as to why it was poorly done. It's a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun. I'm really trying to push myself and get this done for this summer.

In fact, I suggest you dictate what should happen and make the Episode I team follow your lead.

Anyway, great work. I do presume you will cut in some war footage from Episode II as well, right? I think they'll cut together nice if you're at the helm.

Can't hardly wait!

Ditto. Thanks for your compliments- you know that you're the man that revamped the love story and Anakin's "emotional journey" (corny as it sounds) throughout the film, so you are very much responsible for that. Regarding Jar-Jar...I really wish MagnoliaFan would get his new cuts out soon, because he's said that he's secured some rare foreign language tracks for all of the prequels. I think that might be a good place to get Jar-Jar/Nemoidian dialogue. Maybe I can ask him personally...

And as I said, I'm trying to get this out this summer. That will require finishing the movie in a couple months, so that I have time to actually encode the thing, do subtitles, extras, menus, commentary, and so on, and testing it. Believe me, I'm impatient as well (for you all to see this film), but it just takes time. It's a very large and complex project.

Thanks, guys!

Any updates?

Yes- I'm sorry for neglecting this thread. Work has definitely been cruising along behind the scenes here- I have cut many sequences, done the majority of the dubbing, and have actually completed a few scenes (like the Jedi Council scene and the Anakin/Palpatine scene).

Right now I'm working on noise reduction and mixing for my dubs, and also on choosing the best takes for each scene. Sometimes I need to do pickups, but in that case I need to take care that my voice sounds consistent. At this point, I've made several (minor) changes to the original plans with the scenes, which wouldn't have occurred to me without seeing it play in front of me.

I also have to say that I can't quit watching and rewatching the new Coruscant sequence, from the threatening bugs to the nightclub/interrogation. This is all pretty much completed (new sound effects, music, and everything- the whole mix) and it looks and sounds spectacular to me. I can't wait for you to see it.

A couple big character voices that I still need to do are Lama-Su and Jar-Jar Binks. Lama-Su is my fault; I've got to finalize his lines this weekend. Jar-Jar, however, is something that I'm not sure how we're handling. It depends completely on how it's handled in Ep. I. This also goes for the Nemoidians.

Oh, and here's a very rough example of what a clone war taken from Dune could look like. I like this a lot because it feels a lot more human and "hand to hand combat" style. Of course, these new soldiers with the black and red armor will need to be set up by Gunray either in the conference on Geonsis (when Kenobi spies), or in the first war room sequence.

The "Dune" clone war

There's one shot in here where someone beheads one of the bad guys. Trouble is, he uses a little dagger. That shot (and others like it) would benefit from some rotoscoping of new lightsabers (like they did in the Braveheart shot of that fan trailer).

Also, I've not only incorporated 1138, I went a step further and actually used the audio from "THX-1138". In an establishing street shot (right before Zam runs into the nightclub), a woman's voice rings out on some kind of loudspeaker: "TXH 1138, please return to your craft. You are parked in a no-parking zone." It continues to drift on in the distance during the Anakin/Obi-Wan exchange ("You are parked in a no-parking zone. You are parked in a no-parking zone."). I thought that was a neat little detail.

Also, I recorded the background chatter of all of the patrons of the nightclub, one by one, by myself (I can't afford all of the expensive sound effects!). It's probably inaudible, but you might hear patrons talking about galaxy politics, going to a Jar-Jar concert of traditional Gungan music (now we know what Jar-Jar does in his free time), being drunk, and there's even a patron talking about how he won't buy Star Wars on DVD until the original versions are released. Obviously this is a mass jumble (and many of the tracks have been pitch-altered/reversed), but I had some fun with their dialogue.

I've also recorded the Jedi Analysis robot scene. I don't really like the CG robots, though; if I have time, I"m almost tempted to just matte in a bunch of blinking lights, or a console with a speaker (like HAL 9000 in "2001"), and use that instead, as this scene does not fit in the style I'm trying to get.

Anyway, I believe things are going very well, and there are no problems that I can see besides just getting all of these dubs together.

My rendition

This is the version I'm using in "Shroud of the Dark Side". I was going to use the logo from the Ewok films, but I discovered the font and spaciing of the logo was actually altered. Perhaps you can use this.

As far as the fox logo, the film "Alien" has a logo pretty much identical to the Star Wars one. I actually don't have that yet, so if anyone could post a link to a rip of those few seconds of footage from the Alien DVD, I'd be very grateful as well as Hal.

This is what I've kind of figured, only with Episode II now that it is probably due for release first this year. I suspect that once Episode II is released, there'll be a lot more interest and help from a lot of people there. But they have to see a complete film first!

And a homepage would be great, perhaps in conjuctions with Erikstormtrooper's scripts and FAQ page.

Yes- in my opening, the camera pans DOWN to the planet, not up. Rebel11_38 made this possible when he programmed the crawl last August.

And yes, the cockpit scene and all of the rest from Dune will be anamorphic 2:35:1 like the rest of the film. I don’t know why my capture was 4:3, because Dune was originally in 16x9 anyway.

Thanks for that page, Mask! I actually have copies of the dramas (uncompressed), but I’ll bet that’s a great resource for a lot of people.

And who’s to say they didn’t have horses on Geonosis? Just kidding- I’ll look into that

I just noticed the last couple of posts...

Here's the thing- It was my understanding that in InfoDroid's possession is a complete set of new audio dubs for Nute and the others that were recorded a few months ago by Jeff for this very purpose. So I believe that is taken care of; it sounded as though the dubs turned out very well, complete with the proper nouns and all.

I wasn't that keen on Nute's death, anyhow, so that's not a change I regret too much. The big thing, I think, is securing a special effects artist. There are tons of them out there; unfortunately most are not obsessed with improving SW. But this would be a huge step in correcting some of the errors in the design of the prequels. Putting Tarkin in the Senate is the most critical and neccessary for me (if it could be done).

And yes, definitely give yourself time on this. It's a completely groundbreaking and fabulous thing we're doing with these edits. There's every reason to take your time and give the whole thing the attention and polish it needs.

Wow- I’m very sorry you had to leave, InfoDroid and TJ. I really appreciate all of the work you’ve done up to this point, and I hope you’ll still stop in from time to time. I know exactly what you’re talking about, and real life always takes precedent over “fun” work such as this. However…

“My resolve has never been stronger!”

Actually, it would have been kind of embarrassing had you gotten Episode I out before my Ep. II, considering the much shorter time period you were giving yourselves. I am very pleased that Commander Courage is stepping up to the plate as the new manager and editor, so to speak, of Episode I. All I ask is that the film is given to me before release to tweak and to add my own bit of style to it. Also, the DVD format should be the same from movie to movie, so I’ll probably do the subtitles and special features for you. As far as editing programs…I’d strongly recommend that you get Vegas 5. Greencapt recommended it back when I was about to get a high-end editor, and I’ll never regret that decision. Having edited using several different programs (including Adobe), I can tell you that Vegas will save you such a ridiculous amount of time, it isn’t funny. It’s absolutely flexible. The other advantage of this would be that were it ever necessary for you to give me the raw files and the project files, or vice-versa, our set-ups would be totally compatible as well. I’d really recommend Vegas.

I would also love as many different talented people to get involved in this as possible (Sluggo, Musicman, Preston, special effects artists, and others I'm forgetting). I have no idea where MTH went, but he was also a critical visionary for Ep. I. It’s important to have his input throughout as well.

My only word of caution is this: In a project like SOTDS, with only myself doing the work, there are a lot of disadvantages (no second opinions and a longer working time). However, the critical benefit is that my editing is totally dependent on music (and sound effects, to a lesser extent). There are many different shots in the film that are very specifically coordinated with points in the music for dramatic effect. So to me, doing a whole rough cut with the editing, and then throwing in the music and sound effects afterwards is not nearly as effective, unless the music and sound editor is prepared to take the film apart again to re-edit and retime shots to create the best and most dramatic effect. Obviously in the real world of films, the score typically comes after the editing, but the composer is scoring to specific shots and actions. When you superimpose an existing piece over the film, it usually won’t line up, no matter how good it is. I have been fortunate enough to carry out these two processes at the same time, which is filmmaking at its greatest.

Sorry for the long-windedness, but I guess my point is I think it would be better if the same person that cuts the footage in a given scene should be the person that synchronizes the music, unless the music editor also has license to cut the footage as he pleases. That’s why one of my ideas for collaboration was to give each of us a 30-minute chunk for us to work on and put our own touch and style into. Then, the sections (which would be completed much sooner), would be sent to one person, who would unify it as a whole. But you see, in this method, you would still have the same man creating individual scenes, and it would be less of an assembly-line type of approach.

And that was about as clear as mud Anyhow, I’m very glad you guys are going to continue to pursue this. You are making me happier than you know by carrying on with this project without waiting for me to complete everything else. Things get done so much faster that way. And good luck, ID and TJ!

-TM

P.S. It’s occurred that we will also need the Nemoidian dialogue tracks for Ep. I and II from InfoDroid to continue (as well as some possible Owen dialogue?…I PM’d you, ID).

John Williams Film Scores
Time
I own all of the soundtrack CD's. What I was actually curious about was not sheet music, but the full orchestral conductor's scores containing all the cues (and of course all of the instrumental parts), as written by Williams and orchestrated by Herbert Spencer (as opposed to piano music and other adaptations and selections) for his great work in the 70's and 80's. It seems to me that if they even sell these, the book containing all the cues would be monstrous and would cost quite a bit. That's why I was wondering if they rent out these scores like they do with Broadway, because I really doubt that these are widely available. It's not like I'm going to actually use them to record with orchestra, but I have other uses for them...

Thanks

Hi guys,

I was just curious as to where someone might go to either purchase, rent, or somehow obtain copies of John William's full orchestral film scores (for the original SW trilogy and Indiana Jones in particular) for personal analysis and study. It doesn't matter if it's handwritten or not; does anyone know if they rent out copies to consumers?

Thanks so much,

thats awesome. I can't wait till this edit is in my DVd player

Neither can I!

I just thought I would put this out there in case anyone had some free time to spare. I need C3PO dialogue for his introduction on Tatooine, dialogue similar to this, with minimal music in the background:

C3PO: I am See-Threepio, human/cyborg relations. At your service. So pleased to meet you, sir. I need not take the liberty to inform you that…(or some other typical 3PO ramble).

Anakin: I’m here to find my mother- Shmi Skywalker.

C3PO: Your mother! Well, the proper procedure is ….etc. etc. (blah blah blah- establishing him as a very annoying character from the get go).

Anakin: Just take me to your master.

C3PO: Oh, yes. I see. My master. Follow me, please.

CUT to EXT: Owen’s place.

And a little later, we need something similar to this line:

C3PO: Sir, sir! There must be some mistake!

---------

If anyone wanted to do a search through the radio dramas for this dialogue, it would be much appreciated and would save me a lot of time looking through them myself. Unfortunately, I can't find any of the radio drama scripts online, so you'd have to do it by listening to the audio.

Thanks for your help,

THX Remaster=Tinkering?

It's long been my belief that they messed with the film in minor ways for the '93 and the '95 releases. I'm not talking about cropping differences. Ben Burtt threw in a few new sound effects that didn't show up in any other version of the movie. In addition, I believe some video may actually have been changed. I posted screenshots a long time ago, but the thread has disappeared. The big one I noticed is that in pretty much every print of the movie, the close-up explosion of the Tantive IV reactor at the beginning of SW is a white explosion with grey smoke. This includes the special edition. Take a look at the "Faces" version, and you'll notice that the explosion is bright orange. Maybe it was always that way? It's something I've always noticed, though.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

The 2000 version of "Dune" was a wonderful suggestion, and it has some GREAT shots. We now have a much more dangerous looking fall for Padme (out of the gunship), a close-up of Boba-Fett's eyes as he watches his father's murder (the guy looks just like him), a fabulous and critical shot for the dream sequence coming in Ep. III, and several great battle shots for Geonosis, including one complete with the back view of the two pilots. The style of the shots is 100% Star Wars.
