Remember how the original script was thrown out for being too “Star Trek-y” and everyone pitched a fit? Let’s not complain that they’re bringing it back. 😉

I never followed the development of the film, was that reported somewhere?

Edit: Found it. That’s interesting. Didn’t you or someone you know interview those guys a while back?

Man, my respect for Lin, Pegg and Jung has increased even more. They interviewed Justin Lin and Simon Pegg in the latest Empire Film Podcast. During Lin’s interview he revealed that they only had two and half months to come up with a script before production started.

Roberto Orci was originally supposed to direct this film when he suddenly either dropped out or was fired. Abrams then quickly recruited Lin and the others to come in and start over from square one, without being allowed to read the original script. While also being saddled with the film’s original production schedule which was in place to see it out in time for the franchise’s fiftieth. They did a phenomenal job given those circumstances.

Sadly though it seems Paramount/Bad Robot are planning to resurrect that original script for the fourth film. Its two writers, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, are credited as the writers for “Star Trek 4.” Rumor had it that the plot revolved around time travel and that it was part of a plan to give William Shatner a cameo. Now it would seem instead of meeting Kirk Prime, it’s about Kirk meeting his dad, Thor.

My problems with Into Darkness all center around the unbelievably poor writing. Abrams has a long history of employing bad writers and then overcoming that with style over substance. To him, as long as it feels right, it doesn’t matter if it makes sense. The writers don’t have even a basic grasp of science. Back in the first film, a single star goes supernova and that literally threatens THE ENTIRE GALAXY.

Look at the introduction of interplanetary transporters. It’s incredibly stupid and something that’s far too advanced for even that period of time. Just transporting something between two planets in the same system would be miraculous but to do that between planets that are in completely separate quadrants of the galaxy? Virtually impossible. Not to mention the rippling effects that would have on galactic civilization as a whole. Who needs starships when you can beam to wherever you need to go even if its on the other side of the galaxy.

Then you have Khan’s miracle blood that can bring people back from the dead. Solely introduced just so they can ripoff WoK and then immediately bring the character back to life afterward. Completely undermines the scene and is unfathomably cheap. Then the miracle cure for death is immediately swept under the rug and will never be brought up again.

I won’t even get into the idiocy of Benedict as Kahn. It was a crap script for a crap movie.

I was quite pleasantly surprised by Beyond. It actually felt like Star Trek. Sadly, they’ve already announced that the next film won’t be penned by Pegg. Which I think is a huge mistake given everything he and Doug Jung did to course correct from the previous two films. Likewise, they haven’t announced the director but it feels like they won’t bring back Lin either. They finally got it right and it already feels like they’re going to steer it off course again.

The Discovery’s design is not yet final:

Brian Fuller said:

[The influence of the McQuarrie art is] to a point where we legally can’t comment on it until we figure out some things.

Heather Kadin said:

I was surprised Bryan didn’t say [it wasn’t finished footage], actually. I mean, we had three weeks to throw that together. The concepts of the ship are totally what we’re going for, and they’ll be honed up until, I think, the day we deliver.

The BFG (2016)

I’ve sadly been slacking when it comes to keeping up with Steven Spielberg’s modern filmography. The latest film of his that I had seen prior to this was The Adventures of Tintin, a film I have decidedly mixed feelings about. But I went into The BFG hopeful that I’d see some of that classic Spielberg magic. Mark Rylance’s performance as BFG is incredibly enchanting. But unfortunately, the rest of the film never rises to that level. The story is charming for the most part, until the last act, when it suddenly transforms into what feels like an entirely different film. I’ve never read the original book or seen the 1980s animated film so I have nothing to compare it to, but there just wasn’t much there for adults. However, kids seem to love this film. My niece became obsessed with everything BFG prior to its release and couldn’t wait to see it. She ended up really enjoying herself. Which is great, but I remember when a Spielberg film had an appeal for everyone in the family.

Swiss Army Man (2016)

What a bizarrely unique film. It somehow found a way to be endearing while simultaneously revolting at the same time. I’m not a fan of Paul Dano, but I found his performance here quite good. Daniel Radcliffe however was outstanding, he fully embraced his role and was an incredibly good sport about it. The story while utterly absurd by nature, has a very poignant core wrapped inside its bizarre and outlandish trappings.

The Legend of Tarzan (2016)

Without a doubt, the best adaptation the Ape Man has ever seen. It stays true to the characters and their world while deftly tweaking certain aspects for modern audiences. The writing is excellent and the performances are top notch. An absolute delight.

Interesting. For the sake of consistency, I really hope they went with the straight SW77 suit. But your theory lines up with what we know they’ve done with the classic Stormtrooper armor. Keeping the essence of what makes that version what it is while enhancing certain aspects for our current HD world. Here’s John Knoll discussing this at Celebration, with photos. I highly recommend checking out that entire panel, it was packed with pure gold.

Check out the teaser here!

Vengeance comes to “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” this fall at 10 pm!

Gabriel Luna (“True Detective,” “Matador”) will roar into the lives of Agent Coulson and the team, as Robbie Reyes the unstoppable Ghost Rider, which was revealed today at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

“Season 4 will unquestionably be the series’ biggest, most ambitious story yet, and it all begins with the introduction of one of our greatest legacy characters in Ghost Rider,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “When the Spirit of Vengeance rides into S.H.I.E.L.D., it’ll change everything.”
