The Kenobi <s>Movie</s> Show (Spoilers)

Spoilers:

So Ben is persuaded to go and look for leia, knowing the inquisitors would be after him. So, what does he do? Does he wear the same outfit that he is wearing on Tatooine? No, he decides the best way to not stand out is to dress like a bloody jedi. Really?

Response:

He’s not dressed like a Jedi though. He’s not wearing his Jedi tunic and while yes he’s wearing a brown hooded robe we know that’s not unusual in Star Wars. Tons of people all across Mos Eisley in SW77 wear them, even the multi-eyed used landspeeder salesman. They’re an easy way to blend into a crowd and hide your face.

Spoilers:

The first part of EP 2 is nothing more than fluff. he wasn’t interested in the jedi before yet he is suddenly excited about another jedi being on this planet? Turns out out be a con man. We see this guy happily con a woman and her child out of money. but later he just helps obi-wan?

Response:

That first Jedi approached him not far from the Lars homestead. His entire mission is to keep Luke safe and to do that no one can know about him. That Jedi could have had the Inquisitors right on his tail which would have been an eminent threat to Luke. Now that he’s off planet and safely away from Luke getting the help of another Jedi to help find and rescue Leia would be a huge boon.

As for the fake Jedi. He still helps that woman escape he just did it under the guise of a Jedi. It’s theatrics, it’s easier for people to trust that a Jedi would help them than just some random man. And his final conversation with Obi-wan heavily suggests he’s a Rebel sympathizer and has sent Obi-Wan to meet a Rebel contact.

She tells him that anakin is still alive. But, wait a minute… How does she know that obi-wan thinks anakin is dead? That whole scene just seemed like it was rushed in there just so we could get the anakin reveal in the end, with the super wide head. Obi-Wan’s realisation that Anakin is still alive could have been handled so much better, but they screwed it, just for the Duff Duff moment ending ( UK peeps will probably get the eastenders reference here)

Response:

She’s employing the same tactics that Vader used on Luke in the Emperor’s throne room. Working him up and then reading his thoughts/emotions while his control is compromised.

The Galaxy is a Republic and Yet There's a Queen and a Princess

My sense is that in Star Wars (1977) it was not planned for the Rebels to be explicitly fighting to restore democracy as we understand it. The articles of rebellion was written much later. All we knew was that there was a “Senate” which was disbanded.

The original novelization for Star Wars was released November 12th, 1976. And contained this prologue:

ANOTHER galaxy, another time.
The Old Republic was the Republic of legend, greater than distance or time. No need to note where it was or whence it came, only to know that… it was the Republic.
Once, under the wise rule of the Senate and the protection of the Jedi Knights, the Republic throve and grew. But as often happens when wealth and power pass beyond the admirable and attain the awesome, then appear those evil ones who have greed to match.
So it was with the Republic at its height. Like the greatest of trees, able to withstand any external attack, the Republic rotted from within though the danger was not visible from outside.
Aided and abetted by restless, power-hungry individuals within the government, and the massive organs of commerce, the ambitious Senator Palpatine caused himself to be elected President of the Republic. He promised to reunite the disaffected among the people and to restore the remembered glory of the Republic.
Once secure in office he declared himself Emperor, shutting himself away from the populace. Soon he was controlled by the very assistants and boot-lickers he had appointed to high office, and the cries of the people for justice did not reach his ears.
Having exterminated through treachery and deception the Jedi Knights, guardians of justice in the galaxy, the Imperial governors and bureaucrats prepared to institute a reign of terror among the disheartened worlds of the galaxy. Many used the imperial forces and the name of the increasingly isolated Emperor to further their own personal ambitions.
But a small number of systems rebelled at these new outrages. Declaring themselves opposed to the New Order they began the great battle to restore the Old Republic.
From the beginning they were vastly outnumbered by the systems held in thrall by the Emperor. In those first dark days it seemed certain the bright flame of resistance would be extinguished before it could cast the light of new truth across a galaxy of oppressed and beaten peoples…

Might be the power of suggestion, but Hayden looks more like Sebastian Shaw nowadays.

He also sounds more like Matt Lanter. Unless we’re both imagining things…

I also noted how he seems to be speaking in a deeper tone recently. And others have made the comparison before.

It is interesting how he recently confirmed he watched all of the Clone Wars as prep.

All Things Star Trek

Given that this is their final season, let’s hope they pull off the sort of swan song they never got, something akin in feel to The Undiscovered Country.

They had their perfect send off in All Good Things. The movies that followed and the Picard series in particular highlight the truth in the saying you can never go home again.

I feel sorry for the fans who held off watching the new series but will now start doing so in anticipation for season 3. As the first season is one of the most cynical, cold and cruel things I’ve ever watched. I’d never been personally offended by a television series before this. And the second season isn’t much better. What they’ve done to Gene Roddenberry’s vision is unforgivable.

Screening of Original 70mm Print of STAR WARS at The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
Time

Just caught wind of this screening to be held on May 31st. Here are the details:

George Lucas’s homage to the pulpy tradition of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon changed the face of cinema and revolutionized visual effects. Combining classic techniques such as matte paintings and miniatures with the then-new technology of motion control photography, Star Wars imagined worlds, machines, and creatures that remain cinematic touchstones. A Best Picture nominee, the record-breaking hit won six Oscars including Visual Effects, as well as received a Special Achievement Award for Ben Burtt’s imaginative sound creations.

DIRECTOR: George Lucas. WRITTEN BY: George Lucas. CAST: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness. 1977. 119 min. USA. Color. Scope. English. 70mm. Print courtesy of Academy Film Archive. Special thanks to Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution and Lucasfilm.

Very surprising to see LFL allow a print screening. Is there anyone in the area that will try to attend?

Labyrinth of Evil: The Canon Edit - a novel fanedit (Released)
Time

tangelo1023 said:

Restating that the upcoming novel “Brotherhood” will present a canon version of the Cato Nemodia incident. However, since Labyrinth of Evil has now been edited to fit into canon, you can choose which Cato Nemodia incident Obi Wan is referring to in ROTS. There is no reason why Obi Wan and Anakin can’t visit Cato Nemodia twice during the Clone Wars. Depending on how much that novel conflicts with Labyrinth and if they can even coexist, I may make another update of LOE to reconcile the two.

Sounds like this won’t be too much of a concern. Here’s what the author of Brotherhood had to say on the subject:

Mike Chen said:

I did read Labyrinth of Evil a long time ago (I believe before ROTS released), but not recently so the details are fuzzy. As that book takes place right before ROTS and mine is right after AOTC, they can happily coexist until someone deems otherwise.

And Mark is a voice actor. A very good one. I believe the voice is his, but they have adjusted it to sound younger. I found his appearance in the episode to be very well done.

They used a program called Respeecher, a neural network powered voice synthesizer. Here’s Matt Wood on the process:

Matt Wood said:

It’s a neural network you feed information into and it learns. So I had archival material from Mark in that era. We had clean recorded ADR from the original films, a book on tape he’d done from those eras, and then also Star Wars radio plays he had done back in that time. I was able to get clean recordings of that, feed it into the system, and they were able to slice it up and feed their neural network to learn this data.

Small details that took you <em><strong>FOREVER</strong></em> to notice in the <em>Star Wars</em> films
Time

I discovered this background droid that I’d never noticed before in ROTJ:

It’s so obscure there’s nothing in canon or the EU about it.

I don’t know why Wookieepedia decided it must be a giant mouse droid. It’s clearly an Imperial variant of a treadwell.

Also, how would people feel about clipping Poe and Rey “meeting” at the end? I imagine people won’t like the idea, but wanted to see, because they are a couple feet apart for a whole scene in TFA. When I see that moment it makes me think, “The movie is making a point that they have not met before” more than “Oh I bet this goes somewhere.” If anything, their friendship I feel is better served to not highlight that it started right when we would have last seen them by the time of TROS.

I am all for this. The end of TFA implies at least a day or more passes before Rey leaves, enough time for her to assemble a whole new custom outfit. With that amount of time Poe wouldn’t seek out the person that his friend had been obsessed with and ultimately was injured defending?

And as you say, they’re standing right by each other during the meeting. The novelization of TFA even has a scene where they meet for the first time there. And then lastly, he’s there in the crowd to see her off.

Them meeting for the first time in TLJ never made any sense.

I found the sound effect of that train when it first appears absolutely hilarious. It wasn’t the traditional krayt dragon sound (as heard in the '77/'97 versions of ANH or The Mandalorian), but rather the “krayt dragon” call from Ben Kenobi as heard in the 2011 BluRay. That absolutely ridiculous fucking sound, like someone doing a Michael Jackson impression in the restroom three stalls down.

I take this as a retcon. The OOT version of Ben’s call is indeed a krayt dragon, and the 2011/2019 version is this train.

I thought it was pretty clever how they mixed all three versions of the call together throughout the season opener for Mando season 2. So that now all three versions (including the stepped on a lego) are canon.

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)

Also, I don’t mind the dice only being a thing in TLJ. They’re replaced by Han’s medal by episode IX anyway so there’s no real throughline to keep there. If anything having them in both VII and VIII would just make them feel absent from IX.

Have to disagree there. The last time we see the dice in VIII they’re a Force projection that disappears after Luke is gone. The real dice could have made it to Leia by the time of IX but to see them reappear after dramatically disappearing in VIII would have been confusing to general audiences.

I’m all for seeing the scene restored in Restructured.

Doctor Who

I’ve really enjoyed Big Finish’s 8th Doctor stuff. Started with Storm Warning and currently into Doom Coalition. It’s hard to find time to watch anything but I can listen more consistently. It’s especially fun knowing that the 8th Doctor essentially had a career due to wishes and fishes, sort of like fandom over Mara Jade or Thrawn back in the day.

The production quality is better than you’d think for an audio drama. It’s just as good as the show, just in a different format.

I plan to finish through what’s out for the 8th Doctor so far chronologically, then the War Doctor, then start rewatching the 2005 revived series.

Yes! I’m a huge fan of Big Finish.

Got into them at the same time I was first getting into the franchise itself. I incorporated the 6th Doctor’s Lost Stories into my watch through of the classic series. The original Lost Stories run from The Nightmare Fair through to The Macros makes for a fantastic replacement for the lost season of the classic series. It really builds up and enhances the Sixth Doctor’s friendship with Peri.

But it was Storm Warning and 8’s run in the main range that really sealed my love of Big Finish.
