Wow! HUGE news over the weekend. Let’s break this down:

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson reprising her MCU role. She will be joined by David Harbour as Alexei AKA The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena, O-T Fagbenle as Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. Cate Shortland is directing. Marvel Studios’ Black Widow will come to theaters May 1, 2020.

Next up was the first show coming exclusively to Disney+, Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier! Anthony Mackie (The Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier) came on stage to greet the fans, and it was revealed that Daniel Brühl will return as the villain, Baron Zemo. Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will come to Disney+ in the fall of 2020.

Marvel Studios’ The Eternals starring Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, and Angelina Jolie as Thena. The Eternals, which will be directed by Chloé Zhao, will come to theaters November 6, 2020.

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings starring Simu Liu in the title role. Appearing alongside Liu will be Awkwafina in an undisclosed role and Tony Leung as the (real) Mandarin. Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. In theaters February 12, 2021.

Marvel Studio’s WandaVision, an original series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, reprising their MCU roles as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision. Costarring with them is Teyonah Parris, whom Feige revealed would be playing the adult Monica Rambeau, who was introduced as a child in Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel. Marvel Studios’ WandaVision will arrive on Disney+ in the spring of 2021.

Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange with Scott Derrickson returning as director. But joining Doctor Strange this time around will be the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen. In another twist, the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will connect with the Disney+ series Marvel Studios’ WandaVision. Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will cast its spell in theaters May 7, 2021.

The MCU’s favorite trickster Loki will also make his way to Disney+! Marvel Studios’ Loki, an original series starring Tom Hiddleston, will see the god of mischief causing even more trouble starting in the spring of 2021.

Marvel Studios’ What If…?, the first animated series in the MCU, will star Jeffrey Wright as the voice of The Watcher – many actors from across the MCU will reprise their roles as voice talent. What If…? will present alternate realities in the Marvel Universe that are set to warp your world in the summer of 2021, exclusively on Disney+.

Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye starring Jeremy Renner, who joined Kevin Feige onstage share more details about the show, which will introduce Kate Bishop, who has been hitting her mark in Marvel Comics. Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye will come to Disney+ in the fall of 2021.

Natalie Portman will return for Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder, joining stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Taika Waititi returns as director, and he confirmed that Jane Foster will become the Mighty Thor, goddess of Thunder. Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder will arrive in theaters November 5, 2021.

according to this source , Al Williamson drew the 12 strips in 1978 and they were first published in The Art Of Al williamson book in 1983 . I also seem to remember reading that Al had some commitments to his Secret Agent X9 strip that he was doing with Archie Goodwin that prevented him from doing the original adaptation, as he was George’s first choice, and he did not feel like he could give his all to the project . The X9 commitment explanation is actually a professional courtesy cover story for some unfortunate business that happened behind the scenes. The original conceit of the daily Star Wars strip was that it was just going to be a straight adaptation of the original film. To this end, George Lucas was a huge fan of Flash Gordon and Al Williamson’s work. So they commissioned Williamson to create these 12 test strips to see how he’d handle Star Wars.

Unfortunately, there was a mix up at the Lucasfilm offices. Here’s an excerpt from an interview Williamson did where he discusses the incident:

“I was contacted to do it when the movie came out,” Williamson recalls. "I had heard that ‘Lucas loves your work,’ and I thought it was bologna, frankly. I finally got a call from somebody at Lucasfilms, saying that they wanted me to do the strip, and would I consider it? I figured ‘Why not? It sounds like a good idea.’

"I got a hold of my friend Archie Goodwin, who was a wonderful artist and terrific writer, and he adapted two weeks of the first movie. I sent it in, and didn’t hear from them, and I needed the money. I called up and got the young lady that I was dealing with said, ‘I’ll have someone get in touch with you.’ I get a call from this guy, who is absolutely insulting and yelling at me, saying ‘How dare you ask us for more money!’ He’s going on and on.

"Finally, when he stopped, I said, ‘Let’s get one thing straight: I haven’t been paid, I just want my money.’

"Then there’s this silence on the other end. ‘Oh, okay.’

“I decided then that I wasn’t going to work with these people.” Williamson laughs. “I finally got the check, and I said ‘No, I can’t do it.’ Then they got a hold of Russ [Manning], and he did a nice job. That’s what happened, but I never mentioned it to Lucasfilm, since I figured to just let it go.”

Thankfully years later they were eventually able to bring in Williamson and Goodwin to the strip after the departure of Manning. I can also post an excerpt where Williamson discusses this if anyone is interested.

It’s interesting though, George or someone in the offices must have really loved those test strips. They appear as blown up wall decoration in some behind the scenes ESB photos that are floating out there.

Rumor: The Complete Star Wars Saga Boxed Set Coming to 4K Blu-ray in 2020

Sources have reportedly told The Digital Bits that Lucasfilm will be releasing a complete boxed set of The Complete Star Wars Saga in gorgeous 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray sometime in 2020 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. We’ve already seen a report stating 4K editions of the Original Trilogy do exist, so a 2020 release for a complete boxed set of the Skywalker saga is definitely within reason.

With the home media release of Episode IX expected to arrive sometime during the first quarter of 2020, a complete boxed set of the Skywalker saga (in both regular Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD formats) could be released basically anytime after that time period. Talk about the perfect holiday gift, right?

I was overjoyed when the OT and PT made the jump to Blu-ray back in 2011 (remember that goosebump-inducing trailer? I embedded it below for your viewing pleasure). That level of excitement from 2011 will increase tenfold when I get my hands on the saga in 4K.

“More and more, our sources are hinting that Disney and Lucasfilm are likely to release The Complete Star Wars Saga in Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD box sets next year. It makes sense for a number of reasons. First, the final film in the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will be arriving on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K, and Digital early in 2020. That’s reportedly going to be the last such film to be released in the franchise for at least a few years, so it would make sense that they’d release a complete box set of everything to that point. Also, The Empire Strikes Back celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020. And once Disney is done releasing all of their Marvel and Pixar product in 4K, there’s only one big franchise left untapped on the format. For all of these reasons, we think it’s likely that we’ll see these films in 4K next year. We already know that the classic trilogy has been scanned from the original negatives (new 4K masters are done and ready), and the prequels will no doubt be upsampled and digitally restored. Whether Disney and Lucasfilm would consider including the original theatrical versions of those classic films is the $24,000 question. My gut tells me to assume they won’t, at this point. Then, if they do, you can be pleasantly surprised. So take that all as a rumor for now and stay tuned for more here as it comes in.”

Everything in the park was handmade specifically for the park. A number of the helmets in there have never even been created practically before. The Imagineers are no joke, I can easily see them digging into the LFL archives to find and use original molds if they still exist.

This isn’t Star Trek though, it’s fantasy. Not everything needs an explanation.

I am not against the Finn-Rose subplot, but I hated the Maz Kanata hologram action scene and DJ’s stuttering.

I hated a lot more than that: Rose fangirling over Finn, the wacky casino, the unnecessary war profiteering message, freeing the animals and not freeing the slaves, Phasma returning only to die again, and BB-8 in an AT-ST.

These are fair criticisms.

Ivan Ortega’s cut of Finn’s sacrifice was far preferable to the theatrical version. Stopping Finn from sacrificing himself endangered the Resistance and dishonored her sister, who similarly sacrificed herself. Although I prefer edits where an AT-At shoots down Finn, this is an improvement.

Why can’t an AT-AT shoot Finn down? Other edits have shown how easy it is. Including footage of Finn dragging Rose back to base just asks more questions than it answers.

An AT-AT shooting Finn down is a better idea, but either idea is better than the theatrical version.

The mention of spies is necessary to explain why Holdo never reveals her secret plan.

No, it isn’t. Poe’s recklessness destroyed half the fleet and got him demoted. That should be enough of a reason why Holdo never tells Poe the plan.

I am surprised anyone would complain about Ackbar replacing Holdo in the hyperspace kamikaze. Holdo never had a character arc: She refuses to reveal her secret plan for no reason and then dies. If an established character sacrifices himself instead, the scene carries a greater emotional weight.

It’s less Holdo’s arc and more Poe’s arc. Holdo is a plot device that teaches Poe not to let his emotions control his actions. If Holdo, a character that Poe thought couldn’t be trusted, sacrifices herself to save the fleet, it emphasizes that lesson. Ackbar taking Holdo’s role in the suicide run is just blatant fan-service that sacrifices storytelling.

There is no correlation between sound military strategy and suicide bombing. Am I supposed to believe that if an admiral sacrifices herself, her military strategy was wise and her doubters were foolish? In terms of military strategy, Holdo’s plan was to evacuate in emergency craft without light speed–instead of in escape pods with light-speed–to a planet in plain sight of the First Order.

Poe’s relationship with Holdo conveys the value of obedience to authority. Holdo’s hyperspace kamikaze conveys the value of self-sacrifice. These are distinct themes, so the latter sequence cannot enhance the former sequence thematically.

The screenwriters should have killed off Poe when he and Finn crash-landed on Jakku. In The Force Awakens, Poe is so insistent that they retrieve BB-8 one moment only to desert the planet without retrieving him the very next, contradicting his character motivation. When Poe shows up after seeming to die earlier in the film, I could tell that J.J. Abrams rewrote the script to satisfy Oscar Isaac instead of to tell a good story.

Yeah it seems like Harrison used a DVD or the blu-ray of the SE as a source for his presentation. Broke my heart to see him talking about his work while showing shots where it had all been replaced.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (2019)

Wow. A Godzilla movie made by Godzila fans for Godzilla fans. This was SPECTACULAR. If you’re a fan of Godzilla you HAVE to see this. Also, if you can you need to see this in a full size IMAX. Long live the king.

Well there’s two different versions, there’s a slush variety and a traditional liquid. Unfortunately the line was so long to get into the cantina I missed out on the latter. =(

But the slush version, I’d say tasted like liquid skittles. It was delicious.

I got to visit the park on Monday. It was AMAZING! Unfortunately I don’t have time right now to write a big post about it but if anyone has any questions feel free to ask and I’ll try to answer them when I get a chance.
