Sounds like the Elite has no upgraded chips or other hardware beyond the HDMI and the extra 100 Gigs of hard dive space. As a sad note, the 475 price is real, but it also turns out that the elite will be a permanent version of the 360 being offered. So, i'll wait till the price on the regular 360 drops and I'm sure the Elite will drop at the same time and I'll pick it up then.

I want Blue-ray to win the format war (and the previous two months make it look like it will) so an HD-DVD drive would be no concern for me. The HDMI output sounds nice and the 120 GB hard drive sounds very good as well. I'll pick one up if the price is lower. Otherwise, 475 is a lot of money. :\

That's a very good point about recording accurate history. People have a tendency to talk as if they know every detail of what went on in a situation when in most cases, particularly with ancient history, the amount that we do know is dwarfed by what we don't. I suppose we like to take the easy way and feigning knowledge is a powerful way to claim authority on a given matter. Sad that we can't be more honest at times and simply admit what we don't know. I try to be that way myself but I seem to fail miserably almost all of the time.

They involve too many highly questionable paradoxes for one thing. Otherwise to put my understanding of physics simply, if ordinary matter cannot undergo a transition to the speed of light, it seems illogical to propose that any combination of ordinary matter, with finite density and finite gravitational pull, could ever make the transition into an object with infinite density and infinite gravitational pull. The layout of a time-space field would endlessly warp before ever allowing any sort of "event horizon" to exist that is capable of infinitely transforming a photon's wavelength within that same field. In my opinion, black holes are mostly a kind of sensationalist idea. If any similar kind of object exists in our universe (which is still a question for me as well) it would probably have finite mass that is contained within an area of greater-than-zero size.

As I said earlier, I have no problem with the opinion that the movie would have been better without the freak show. I can probably see myself agreeing with that viewpoint on the basis of realistic drama alone. (Plus, sticking to the original intention of the original author is a good thing.) However, I don't see how any of you can totally and completely reject the fun aspect these strange additions might have had, or refuse to see any other possibly-redeeming qualities they might have had. Sure, they sucked in some ways, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have been enjoyable in some other, different ways at the same time.

The Secret History of Star Wars

Wow, I missed an important thread. This sounds like a very impressive project, zombie. I'll definitely start reading it as soon as I have the time. As a person with a strong imagination like George Lucas, I'll be interested to read your account of the process he went through and decide for myself what mistakes he made.

Also, just to comment on the side discussion, there's a difference between mythologies and fabrications. In a basic sense, Christianity can be 100% true and still be a mythology. At the same time, a mythology can be 100% false and still be revered in ways. The point of mythology is that it is a story—particularly one that is concerns immortal people or deeds. That doesn't mean the story is automatically true or false.

Also, I understand that Joseph Campbell is respected by many people (including George Lucas), but many of the historical bits of information the man based his opinions on were erroneous in my estimation. I don't consider him to be a very reliable scholar (though he's a good communicator and philosopher).

Where did I put words in your mouth, crazyrabbits? Don't put words in my mouth. I hate it when people flippantly throw around accusations.

Otherwise, I'm sure that a more serious approach like the original "graphic novel" (if it really was serious on every page) would have been cool (probably even better in terms of heightening the drama). I just enjoyed what I saw for the reasons I've already stated. They were fun things to watch in a movie and seemed to fit my ordinary understanding of a neat, comic-book-style imagination. If you believe that those reasons of mine are wrong, then I'm willing to discuss that.

As a student of mythology and legends I can tell you that mystical creatures like that goat man have been in he minds of people for a very long time.

Seriously, I actually like random strangeness in movies if it's done well (otherwise I wouldn't like the original Star Wars) and having a strange goat man playing a string instrument in Xerxes presence spoke to his immense wealth. To own such a rare and mystical being gave the hunchback even more awe when he observed Xerxe's greatness. I actually don't mind that people laughed. I actually even agree that it was silly in many obvious ways. I laughed myself. That still doesn't mean that I don't think it was awesome at the same time though.

Well, considering that, along with that thing with the knife-hands, he's one of the two distinctly non-human characters in the film, and also considering the fact that he just comes out of nowhere for five seconds bobbing his head around, then yes, it WAS ridiculous. The audience I was with first were muttering "what the fuck" when knife-man showed up, and then the goat got a large amount of laughter.

What's worse is why he relates to this story. He's just kind of...there. It's never explained if he speaks, why Xerxes hired him (although I'm sure he goes over great at parties), and what his function is, aside from window dressing. It's a campy moment in an otherwise serious scene when hunchback man is being tempted by the dark side, so to speak.

Xerxes was also portrayed as a giant man. I hope that didn't bother you immensely. At least at some point I'm hoping you would have been able to get into the fantastic mindset. The movie's based on a comic book after all and that's what comic books do. More comic book-to-movie adaptations should be like this in my opinion. Otherwise, perhaps Ridley Scott will make his version of the Battle of Thermopylae and then you'll be much more happy.

This movie was perhaps the best purely-action-oriented movie I've ever seen. Very enjoyable. There certainly wasn't anything truly deep about the story and the comic book-ish elements decreased the depth even further, but I'm definitely not saying that's a problem. Movies like this just don't usually leave me very attached to them in any sentimental way. Though the character portrayals and the acting were very good I think, considering what the movie was aiming for.

Nintendo is doing extremely well this time around. The Wii's user base is growing to the point where it will be large enough to ensure its long term success even if its new controller ultimately fails. However, I think the controller is great and probably won't fail. Really, its only problem is how the it has no killer application to make it necessary for gameplay yet. At the moment it's mostly just fun to swing around and mimic real-world actions with. I want to see new ways to control a game that are so intuitive and superior that I won't want to use any other kind of interface.

The Super Mario Bros. cartoon series and many of the other, older story ideas were based upon ideas thought up in america. For instance, Toadstool was actually princess peach in Japan. I think we just discussed how the Goombas weren't mushrooms and that sort of thing. I like Super Mario World 2's ending since it shows how the Mario brothers were delivered to their parents (who lived in a mushroom house) by the stork.

Otherwise, yeah that Final Fantasy parody is great. I really like how they edited the movement to be jumpy like oldschool game animation and I'm impressed by how closely they were able to get people to mimic the movement styles.

In other news, I played the Ninja Turtles arcade game on Wednesday. It was awesome to play it after all these years. That game is a classic.
