He's recanted that statement, but I think it was basically right. The Wii isn't about bleeding edge graphics. As far as I'm concerned, it looks dated now. The point of the Wii is inexpensive hardware and fun gameplay. That's what consoles should be about.

Yeah. It's those rubber "armor" pieces. That's definitely not my favorite part. I just hated the full-rubber-suit deal from all the earlier movies. This goes more towards something functional looking at least.

I finished saving up some money for an X-box 360 Elite this Friday, but last night I learned that in the fall they'll be changing the 360's cpu or gpu (I'm not sure which) to a "65nm" chip and that it will be more reliable (less heat to warp the motherboard) and that a price drop for the console will attend this change (cheaper to manufacture). So, I'm deciding to wait until that's released.

Hotrod, since the verb form of message has always sounded odd to me, I'd like to take this moment to simply say your signature could also be changed to massage.

Anyways, I liked the first two Die Hard movies (not sure about the third since I only saw it on a network broadcast) but those previews make this fourth one look way over the top.

You and I seem to think a lot alike, Marvolo. Though I would hope her father isn't abusive, his description by Sean makes me think along those lines. At the very least it sounds like his personality might be overpowering hers. :\

Based on that, Sean, I would definitely say that this girl is not a good candidate for you to date right now. Your decision not to have a relationship with her is a very wise one. You yourself are very new to romantic relationships, correct? If so, it's best to take them slowly (though I think its always good to take romance slowly).

In terms of your friend, her life is very closed off and I'm guessing she probably has a very low opinion of herself. Your job, as her friend, is to encourage her to be more confident and outgoing so that she can be her own person in terms of how she relates to other people. (Help her to gain other friends and be there to lift her spirits.) When and only when she has actually grown in those ways would romance be a good thing to pursue (in my opinion).

He would look the part. A good makeup job would then make him uglier and we'd have a perfect visual. The question is whether or not he could act the part. I always imagined Rorschach with a creepily calm voice the entire time I read Watchmen.

You mean "accept."

I guess I understand your point better, Marvolo, assuming you look at special edits of Star Wars only as alternative versions and not a supposedly "improved" replacement of the original. I still believe the original film is the best version to watch in a historical sense and in an authentic sense. Other than that, I think tasteful, alternative versions are a fun experience. Too bad George's edits were designed to replace the originals.

TPM: I didn't think it was great, but I still liked it a lot (after repeated viewings) and thought the rest of the series would have promise (assuming George got some other directors to take over). It had a fun and fast story and I didn't initially mind the new take on some of the things (like midichlorians, overpowered jedi, or jar-jar-style humor) since I figured George could take the series where he wanted so long as it was actually watchable in some way. The acting wasn't good, but character drama wasn't the focus of the movie so I let that part slide.

AotC: I thought it was good. My initial impression of the acting was that is was absolutely awful (far worse than what we saw in TPM) and the dialogue the actors and actresses had to speak with was even worse, and yet I still strangely had the impression that the movie was fairly entertaining (though that battle at the end made no sense and seemed totally disconnected from the rest of the movie and Yoda's fight scene was silly and completely sensationalistic).

RotS: After my first viewing I thought it was perhaps the best film of the series [edit: the prequels] (though I think this was mostly wishful thinking). The acting was still bad (though only at TPM levels and not as bad as what we saw in AotC) and I knew the film was way too long and filled with useless crap, but I still managed to like it somehow. Looking back now I'm pretty sure that I was disoriented by the hyper pacing of the film.

Now I think that Phantom Menace isn't nearly as good as I initially had (particularly, the more boring DVD cut), but I still think it's the only prequel that has actual merit. Pittrek complained earlier that there was no story in TPM, but AotC and RotS have less of a story. At the most you could argue that AotC is a mystery and that RotS is about the origin of Vader, but that's really reaching for something as far as I'm concerned (since the first is barely significant and the second is not a unifying concept for the film in which it is placed). In TPM you had a war to liberate a planet from a corrupt political power; its very simple, self-contained, and fun (the only odd parts of the film's story deal with Anakin in the sense that they feel tacked on, but I consider that an interlude).

Noam Chomsky is a very intelligent guy but his view of the world is insane. Otherwise, I wouldn't classify him as ever belonging to a list of great Americans since I've never heard him praise, support, or credit any facet of American culture. (Maybe he has, but I'd question the genuine nature of such a comment in light of the hatred he's expressed for America at other points in time.)

Well, as did I. I enjoyed the edgier episodes the most. However, I stopped watching after the first season because there were too many instances where the show seemed to follow the exact same Star Trek formula. There's only so much of the same thing that I can enjoy. I'd have to say that the first insultingly unoriginal episode was the one where the captain was undercover on that primitive planet (middle-ages tech if I remember) and he had the hots for a primitive-tech-alien chick. Like I've never seen that before.

Heh, true, but he was so heavily associated with the US in his later years and his accomplishments were so great that I believe a list of greatest Americans should recognize him in some way, even if he wasn't primarily an American.

Enterprise was a terrible attempt. Not to say that the episodes were bad, but they offered absolutely nothing new from what I could see. I had really hoped Enterprise was going to go to a much more politically incorrect place. Have people be paid money for their jobs for one thing and more diplomatic mistakes. Instead every episode was a clone of an episode from TNG, DS9, or Voyager except with the twist that these were supposedly the "first" times that these types of incidents had occurred. Heh.
