The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (1966) remastered mono track (for 4K restoration + Mondo IT) (Released)
Time

Version 1.1a is now finally out.

I fixed some of the more disturbing issues with dropped frames. However, if they appeared too minor or wherever I felt that fixing would actually make things worse (by changing vocal characteristics of the music, creating artifacts etc.), I left them in their original state.

However, the most important bug has been fixed - a wrong sound sample (spoon noise) during a scene with Stevens' - it was missing in the 1993 LD. I used Italian mono now to fill it.

Version 1.1 is finished! The old download source still works.

Update: alas, still not finished, as kk650 keeps finding new glitches. I will wait till he's done.

Some clarification at this point. The glitches indicated by kk650 are mostly inherent in the original mono sound and not the result of its synching to the 4K edition. Some of them are actually still present in the mono downmix of the 4K. I am looking into the most severe ones in order to fix them, but some is just not possible (at least for me) without introducing further artefacts.

Little status update:

- The sound drop is actually on the original PCM track. Fixed.

- The wrong spoon noise (bit that was cut out of the 1993 LD): Fixed.

The version 1.1 will be released tomorrow or Sunday the latest.

Can I ask is the ending of the Mondo version different to the US releases?

Yes, the Mondo ends earlier.

Also, the last of Tuco will not sync to English language, see here why.

I also noticed during the dining scene with Stevens that the sound of the wooden spoon hitting the serving bowl is out-of-sync and drops out briefly when AE releases the spoon.

So, I have checked this place. Actually, the sound of the extended edition (from where I took the filling sounds) was just wrong at this location! There you have sounds of the spoon which are just not there and cannot be there.

The Italian mono track which I checked out also, had the proper ambient sounds of cockerel and chewing, but no spoon handling. So I suppose I will have used the Italian track after all for version 1.1! :)

As for the dropped sound bit at 2:32:50 - this has also occured on the re-rendered version from Vegas. So I am rendering it a different way now.

I'll look into that. Actually, at this spot there is material filled in from the 1998 DVD.

The "3 bandidos" scene was missing from the 1998 release as well, see here, so it is filled with the Extended Edition material.

Thanks to kk650, a small audio glitch (audio drops for a split second at 02:32:50) was discovered in the mono track. This glitch must have occured during rendering from Vegas, as this was okay in the project itself (and no editing took place at this timecode). Therefore, I suggest I'll re-render and re-encode it, so whoever is disturbed by it can re-download it.

Help Wanted: Does anyone have The Good, Bad & Ugly laserdisc audio?
Time

The shot with the chewing of the cigar was not present both in the 1998 DVD and in the 1993 LD.

The shot with extra waiting for the cannon to fire seems to actually be in the 1993 LD, as I didn't have to extra sync this scene.

The shot of Blondie turning longer around to Tuco (as he rotates his spur) was neither in the 1993 LD nor in the 1998 DVD.

I wouldn't go so far as to judge which shot belongs and which does not. I am also puzzled as to why Leone removed the "Sorry Tuco" bit from the Italian version and kept it in the international one (as it still seems present in the neg).

It seems that you and TheHutt are the experts on this film, would either of you be interested in working with me to create a regraded US theatrical cut and US extended cut with mono tracks to make everybody currently angry about the official release having the strong blanket yellow tint and lacking mono with original sound effects happy again?

Well, basically, about the cuts you have to perform to create a US Theatrical Cut, here is a complete analysis:

http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=1622

However, you'd have to bear some points in mind:

- the time indexes specified in this comparison are PAL times (25fps), so you'd have to convert them to 23.976fps. Also, mind the difference of the logo lengths.

- The Cut 1 is an oversight during DVD production and should not be there (ie the scene does not need to be cut). This scene was complete in the 1993 LD / 1998 LD.

- The end of Tuco pistol buying scene is faded to black prior to the Grotto scene in the Extended Edition. The US Theatrical version does not have this fade and cuts directly to the soldiers riding through town. No idea how to fix this one.

- The at the end of cut 10 there is some music which is carried over to the next shot in the Extended Edition. In the Theatrical, there is no music at the beginning of the same shot.
