Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

Just rewatched Harmy's ROTJ version 1.0 and there were some issues that should be fixed in a later release.

- The composition off Luke and the Rancor is the 2004 version: the matte lines at the Rancor's legs are missing, and the colors are matching. The original version had prominent matte lines and mismatched colors.

- The hand-painted black blobs at the sides of Palpatine's face also are missing (they were removed in the 2004 version, IIRC).

Preserving "French" Original Trilogy - ANH V1.0 released - ESB in progress

It's interesting that there WERE French credits though. This might be an indication, that there were in fact German credits as well, which I didn't know of.

Not necessarily. The French seem to usually translate the entire credits sequences (and continue to do so). In Germany, this is rather an exception (from 50s till the 70s it was done more often, but in the 80es, it rather went down).

Terminator (1984) - Foreign versions! (now just Italian) (* unfinished project *)
Time

We thought this would be a good occasion to work on other foreign releases of the same film, since we are at work to remove all the text.
Am I right to guess that at least Germany and France had their own localized versions on Laserdisc?

As a matter of fact, no. The German version used the English master throughout (as was the case with T2 as well), whereas the intro text and the relevant HUD status messages were translated by voiceover.

I have seen the German "To be continued" card. Contrary to the Part 2 card, it looked quite digital and low-res to me (rather pixelated). However, that might have been just the German home video editing process.

Interesting! Would love to see what it looks like.

 It looked like this:

The second one was actually on 35mm (seen it in a theatre).

The animated BTFF was released on VHS and even Laserdisc in the 90's.

And perhaps DVD in some country? I believe a myspleen member was going through the process of syncing the English audio to some DVD. They finished Season 1 and part of 2 before apparently calling it quits.

Still hoping that someday someone will budge and release a Stoltz cut. Or at least a scene or clips with audio.

The animated series will be released in Germany on DVD by Turbine, in October 2015. They are also planning some bonus material.

A twist: BTTF II had to have been at least partially retransferred for BD, because the end teaser for BTTF III says "COMING SUMMER 1990". Unlike the ending of BTTF I, the 2002 DVD transfer of II used the home video ending, where there wasn't a date under the BTTF III title. (Anybody have even a down convert of one of the HDTV versions, and can check if "Summer 1990" is on there?)

Also, if the first wasn't retransferred, how were the wheels/etc. correctly yellow? Or would the color correction gaffe not have been on the 2K source? In the same shot, the road stripes in the distance were also "pinked", and they're correctly yellow in the BD.

Just food for thought...

Not only that. In the bonus material the makers mention that they actually replaced the footage from BTTFI reused in BTTFII with scans from original negative of BTTFI to prevent generation quality loss.

Actually, when I have been watching BTTF 1-3 on 35mm five years ago, I noticed that BTTFI footage in BTTFII was clearly of a worse quality than the rest.

PS: where can I find this DCP that is floating around?

Duck, You Sucker! (1971) - Original Mono Repair. (Released)
Time

With that being said, does anyone know anything about the quality of the new American Blu Ray?

I have it. The PQ is better than the Italian one; however, the audio is still the (rather horrible) 5.1 upmix, which suffers from the following issues:

  • Dialog censorship (it seems to be based on the censored audio track - the Italian is uncensored).
  • (Reportedly) wrong music cues used for the final flashback scene (again, the Italian disc is correct here).

So a project to sync your English mono track to the MGM BD would be probably a good idea, given that the MGM has a better PQ.
