Dario Argento's Three Mothers (* unfinished project - lots of info *)
Time

The R1 Anchor Bay/Blu Underground DVDs are generally considered to be of reference quality, colorwise.

I enjoyed MOTHER OF TEARS for what it was, and even caught it at its world premiere with Dario and Asia in attendance, but would hesitate to even include it in the same sentence as the other two. Good luck with the project, DJ.

I heard the UK BD has decent audio, but is missing a line (or, indeed, a single word) from around where the side change was on the laserdisc, so probably came from that source (unless, of course, both just happened to occur at the same reel change).

For the best video, you'd probably do well to pick and choose your scenes from various releases. There's also the Australian release to consider, which may or may not have some unique characteristics. There's a discussion about that one here:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=202998

Koch gets my vote for best PQ for Inferno, though some prefer the tweaked colours (from the same master) of the US release. Not sure how the Blu Undies 7.1 and Arrow 5.1 remixes stands up to Koch's original 2.0.

Mother of Tears? Nyeah...

Dawn Of The Dead has been my favorite film since I was a child. Anybody know how to download this? I have no clue how to use newsgroups.

No idea, sorry. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere anymore. But you could try asking for help on one of the Dawn of the Dead groups on facebook. There's probably a few of them so I'd start with the most active one and go from there.

Failing that, I believe I should have them somewhere...

What is disappointing is that even starting from the DVD's and now the BD, Raiders still has out of focus moments that are distracting for me. You could barely see it on the DVD because of the low DVD resolution but on the BD it really shows up. Its on the WoWoW brodcasts as well BTW.

Those flaws are inherent in the original photography. Not much you can do about it, really, without introducing other equally (or even more so) "distracting" artifacts.

Hi DJ. Will you be revising your replacement audio for the European version, too, or just the US theatrical? Thanks.

I would like to say yes to that because I have learned so much and I know I can do better, but with all we have going it is going to be a while.

You are talking about the fixing of the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track correct?

Correct! Great to hear. I can certainly wait - especially if we have your US theatrical version to see us through in the meantime!

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Some JVC projectors have an "e-shift" function that rapidly moves the image up and across half a pixel in each direction, repeating every frame, eleminating the "screen door" effect altogether. It almost works as a kinda psuedo-4K but with a regular 1080p panel.

I agree with Harmy that 4K content in the home is a waste and that there are other, far more important factors to consider than mere resolution.

I am watching on a 130" screen, by the way. The pixel structure on my 1080p LCD projector is not visible at normal viewing distance.

I think this "e-shift" technology and the like sounds like a smart alternative to bumping up the res, which will create more problems.

I wasnt trying to boast I was just showing Harmy my appreciation for his work by sharing with him a couple of screen shots, of which he understood and appreciated.

Of course, lpd. After all, I did the same. Please excuse my sense of humour.

But, let's face it, we must have at least a little pride in our projector set ups. Not just because the they're awesome, but also because of the resources we've invested and sacrifices we've made in order to make them happen.

I could look at projector screenshots all day long and wouldn't want to dissuade you from posting more. They give a great idea of how v2.1 translates to larger displays.

I just wish I had a good camera!

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I just remembered that there's this "dick measuring" thread for home theatre talk/boasting:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/What-is-your-home-theater-setup-for-watching-Star-Wars-movies-or-what-equipment-would-like-to-get-if-you-could-afford-it-or-dream-setup/topic/14630/

Since I can't provide useful photos of Harmy's work in action, I'll restrict any future celebration of my viewing environment to that thread and invite ya'll to do the same, should you feel that you're pushing the boundries of topic relevance.

While I am here, however, I will say that its stuff like this that makes me truly appreciate what I've been able to cobble together with limited funds and restrictive conditions (I rent, and have moved twice in the past year, which has presented vast challenges due to the specific demands of a projection set up). God knows that I've sat through endless hours of the latest slick, state-of-the-art special effects-laden Hollywood dreck with barely a tinge of satisfaction with the technological terror that I've constructed.

Harmy's despecialized editions of the OT, however, have brought nothing but absolute joy and a prevailing sense that all that investment and sacrifice can and does eventually pay off. Bravo.

Here's my set up. I'm using an Epson TW9000 (aka 5010) projector with an anamorphic lens for my 130" scope screen. It has a THX(!) mode which is very close to calibration standard. Unfortunately my camera phone isn't the best so I gave up trying to get some good shots. They simply will not do Harmy's work justice. Rest assured, the upscaled 1080p picture is very sharp, very vivid and the colours and contrast are spot on.

The HH's sound is amazing, too, with lots of wonderful bass. The Buttkicker I have attached to the couch gives it a good shake every time one of those pesky TIE fighters explode. Thanks HH!

Our Night Of The Living Dead 1990 project (Released)

Approved, my arse. Savini never officially endorsed it and while DP Frank Prinzi did talk to the tech guys beforehand, he never saw the final product, let alone signed off on it. For Twilight Time to say it was an "approved" transfer is deceitful.

http://www.cinemalowdown.com/2012/11/cinema-lowdown-exclusive.html

FRANK PRINZI: I have to let you know that I haven't seen the transfer on Blu-ray, on a good screen, yet. I just saw [a] quick clip on the internet and what I saw looked bad. I was consulted verbally a couple of years back but was never given a "first draft" copy of the transfer to give my true feedback. It went from words to visuals. The range of interpretation is limitless. The words “cool” or “darker” can be taken in so many ways that without a visual marker to refer to, one can go in any direction. From what I hear the direction taken did not bring pleasing results to many.

I'm hesitant to PM myspleen invites because I often only check in every other day or so and assume that I've already been beaten to it. If Harmy wishes, I'm happy for him to add my name to the first post, inviting people to PM me with a request. I get e-mailed PM  notifications so I should respond within a reasonable time frame.

EDIT: All invites now exhausted. Sorry!

Night of the Living Dead 1990 (* unfinished project *)

Just wondering if anyone thinks that it would be at all possible to use the isolated score from the BD to somehow 'cancel out' the music from the movie so that it could be replaced with other music? Like quality versions of the tunes used in the workprint, library music or perhaps another source (like, say, the unused Lalo Schifrin score for THE EXORCIST)?

Just a hypothetical...
