Here is a third version of this effect (made following Andrew Kramer's tutorial at http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/

Like I said at FE.org I do this shots to learn after effects more than to add even MORE CGI to Indy 4. But ID is interested by the concept of "teleportation" for his edit. So I'm toying with after effect and 3DSmax to see what can be done.

The goal is to make all skeletons vanished kind of like Spalko later. And the alien is "teleported in" by a reverse version of this effect (starting by the head). So when Spalko vanished we can assume that they are "teleporting" her more than just killing her.

I don't know if I can make shots realistic enough to be used in this edit, but I'm trying!

But I think ID could end with 2 versions of his edit, a "purist" and a more "let's our imagination rolls" version. So don't be afraid, we don't want to add CGI just for the pleasure to add CGI! ;)

Bonus: a new look for the alien

http://rapidshare.com/files/249661748/Demon_Alien.mpg

Looks good, but... a bit too CGI-ish, I think. Good work, but maybe something could be done for the CG to not look so clean?

Good clip!

Based on this, I got another radical idea. Would it work, story-wise, to have the short Vader scene - getting the headgear on, with the Emperor standing by - as the very first scene of ROTS? As a way of building mystery - "who's this guy? Looks evil" - and introducing him early on as a central character. Then when Anakin fails, this other guy finishes the job. There should be at least one instance where Palps refers to his new apprentice Vader by name, so we could put that line earlier in the film. That way we just assume Sidious got a new apprentice after Maul (Dooku was never his apprentice, as far as I'm concerned), since we're not supposed to know he and Palps are the same man yet anyway. And when it's revealed, we could just assume he has two apprentices. (Oh, and btw, screw the "rule of two". At best it's just a Sith survival mechanism, but once they're out in the open (after Maul), it wouldn't make sense to keep it.)

It's blatant trickery, of course, to admit it was really a flash-forward two films later. Of the very worst kind. Still, it's fun as an idea, at least.

EDIT: Thinking about it, using the Vader name earlier in the film to imply there are two, is way over-the-top. I got a little carried away. :)

I love this thread!

Sounds good. Hopefully this will work.

I didn't see this on the opening page , so I hope this hasn't been discussed before

I'm off work today, recovering from the Flu and decided to watch Empire for the first time in about a year or so, and re-noticed a minor little something thats bugged me for a while. In the scene where Yoda meets Luke, Yoda grabs some sort of weird chocolate bar from Lukes rations, takes a bite and chews, yet the food remains completely intact, it always reminded me of the scenes on Sesame street whenever the characters mimed eating something. Is there any way to actually make it look he actually took a bite out of the bar?

It sounds like a minor thing, and I'm sure it's well within the realms of Ady's capabilities, but It would add more believability to Yoda in that brief little scene.

I'm sure this was mentioned before, but I don't recall if Ady addressed it or not.

Ady has addressed this, and it is being fixed, I believe.

50MB split screen

I would have uploaded this to YouTube but this time I also applied a sharpening filter (with moderate settings, I hope), since it was bugging me to see that the whole movie was just blurry for no reason. It's a 2500kbps MP4, that way you'll be able to notice the sharpening and the details.

Is this the same split screen you posted earlier? I have satellite internet with a low download speed and a bandwidth cap, so I'd rather not download this if I don't have to. I hate to ignore someone's hard work, but do you think I'd be alright without seeing it?

Some screenies for you (and whoever doesn't want to download a 50MB video)

Guess I'll have to open a thread soon.

Great work, but that video reminds me just how horrendous the acting is in AOTC, especially by Natalie Portman.

Obi-Wan must appear to kill Anakin on Mustafar, or at least leave him to die. Vader should then show up in his suit and attack the Temple

Do it Pulp Fiction style and have the chronology of events obscured, only to be truly revealed in RotJ. Lol!
Seriously though, I like this idea (yours Rinon, not mine); making Anakin's defeat a mid-film climax rather than end-film.

EyeShotFirst said:

Just not Anikan becoming Vader. When Anikan is burning in the fires of Mustafar let him close his eyes then have an establishing shot with sad music and take it from there.

I was just thinking about doing something similar: After Obi-Wan dismembers Anakin, do not show any movement in his torso. Make him look limp and lifeless to imply he is dead. Then, still not moving, the immolation begins and seals the deal. Even though we all know he isn't dead, to a newcomer it should seem very convincing.

EDIT:
It would also lend more credibility to Obi-Wan's decision to not finish him off, which doesn't make much sense in RotS when "Lord Vader" is still so obviously alive. And I don't believe that Obi-Wan did that because he couldn't bear to bring himself to once again attack his "brother." He's a Jedi Master and should have been able to recognize that Anakin isn't Anakin anymore. If anything, he should have been compelled to finish him off so that his "brother" wouldn't suffer such a horrible death. Yet another example of something that was done merely because it has to lead into the OT and not because it makes sense for the films' characters to do.

EyeShotFirst said:

It won't be hard to pull off neither. We just need someone who has a vader suit.

Just be sure that you get someone with a suit that has an appropriate looking headpiece. I notice that, all too often, even the best of Darth Vader costumes have a mask that looks wrong when compared to the films. The mouth area breathing apparatus seems to protrude to far.

RoccondilRinon said:

The other thing I'm thinking is, if we use Ringo's suggestion, I'd still like to see the immolation and the Vader-suiting-up, in a ROTJ edit as flashbacks to complement Obi's exposition.

This is similar to what I plan on doing with my RotJ mock-up.

I really like these ideas. However the question of "a pupil of mine, until he turned to evil" still remains. What can be done about this?

I remember this being mentioned, but I don't remember if Ady confirmed or denied using the idea, but what are the chances of using the ESB DVD menu shot of the Falcon approaching Cloud City? In the menu version the camera pans to follow the Falcon, while in the actual movie it cuts from one angle to the other without panning. I like the menu version a bit better, and its a nice looking shot too, if it could be usable.

Then you'll be glad to know that Adywan has indeed incorporated that 'continuous' shot of the Falcon, and it looks terrific.

How do you know this?

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you were never going to watch the originals/SE DVDs ever again.

You mean after putting so much work into these edits, you won't even enjoy the end products?

I will never be returning to any of the revisited edits once they are finished. There is a high possibility that once all 6 movies are finished i will never watch the Star Wars saga movies ever again. The only thing i would change in ANH:R is the torture droid needle. it really didn't turn out the way i wanted it to. Apart from that i'm happy with what i was able to do

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm only going to watch only the Revisited versions from now on as well :)

Just curious, but how did you intend for the needle to look?

Btw, I was thinking - can Vader's hologram do with a tiny bit of work (the one where he appears before General Veers during the Hoth ground assault)? Maybe it can be sharper; with Vader's helmet looking better, and the hologram can flicker a bit.

I'm pretty sure this is being fixed.

I'm really glad that Ady is going the non-CG way. It'll really make this edit that much more professional and will really assimilate it into the look and feel of the original ESB.

Can't wait for the Behind the Scenes clips! Oh, and the May 2010 [tentative] deadline isn't so bad.

Ady, I've got a question for you:

I know you're never returning to ANH:R, but if you were to (re)make this fanedit now, after gaining the experience you've gotten after finishing ANH:R and working on ESB:R, would you do anything differently (in terms of the Revisited changes)?

Why is "gay" so frequently used as a synonym for stupid nowadays?

Or do you mean that Yoda literally looks homosexual on the poster? ;)

Of course, the actor who dressed up as him is the same as the bruno guy. lol

Nah it's just the way Americans talk :/

Really? I'm American. I don't speak that way.

And no, I'm not gay, so I'm not personally offended, but I just don't like it when "gay" is used to mean "stupid".

Idea & Info: 'Watchmen - The Graphic Novel Cut'...
Time
ChainsawAsh said:

This edit is in the planning stages - as much of the changes I want to make require a great deal of work, this won't be started until I've finished my Star Wars: The Trilogy edits (at least ANH and maybe ESB, depending on when Ady releases ESB:R). I also need to wait until the Super Extended Cut is released this winter that includes Tales of the Black Freighter incorporated into the film, along with the "bridge" scenes of the kid reading TotBF and the newsvendor talking to him.

But I'm starting this thread now to bounce ideas off of you guys, both for specific edits and for figuring out the more complex stuff that I don't yet know how to do.

So, here's my current plan (based on the Director's Cut):

- Rebuild most of the audio from the ground up to remove most (if not all) of the songs (possibly to be replaced with more songs quoted in the graphic novel).
- Specifically, 99 Luftballoons, The Sounds of Silence, Ride of the Valkyries, I'm Your Boogie Man (maybe), Hallelujah (definitely), All Along the Watchtower (possibly to be replaced with Dylan's original), and Desolation Row (likely to be replaced with Dylan's original) will be either removed or replaced.
- Credits sequence will be removed, as will much of the Comedian fight intro - the film will open with a simple black-on-yellow (or vice versa) WATCHMEN title, followed by the pan up from the smiley-face pin to the cops talking about Blake's murder, which will be intercut with relevant portions of the removed intro - Rorschach's narration might start here as in the GN as well
- Cops seeing/shooting at Rorschach (added to DC) will be removed
- Hollis/Dan seeing Rorschach news story on TV (added to DC) will be removed (this also fixes an error made by the newscaster, who says that the Keene Act was passed "six years ago," which would make it '79, when it's supposed to be '77)
- Dan asking Rorschach about the cops/news story (I believe this was added to the DC) will be removed
- Laurie/multiple-Manhattans sex scene shortened
- Over-the-top aspects of Laurie/Dan vs. knot-tops toned down
- Over-the-top aspects of Veidt's assassination attempt toned down (perhaps - I don't have a huge problem with the scene as is)
- "Fingerprint scan" in Dan's goggles removed
- Sex scene shortened considerably, plus new music
- Prison fight sequence shortened considerably
- I'd love to get rid of the "Rameses II" book sitting right next to Veidt's computer and let Dan figure it out the way he did in the GN, but I don't think it'd be possible
- I'd also love to insert an explanation for Bubastis and Rorschach's mask, but I also don't think either one of those would be possible
- No superhuman feats during the Veidt/Dan/Rorschach fight (though the bullet thing will, of course, stay) - this will be tricky
- Rorschach will die alone as in the GN
- No Dan beating the shit out of Veidt after Rorschach's death (since he won't witness it this won't make sense)
- Cut "Tonight, a comedian died in New York" narration at the very end - it will just be "Rorschach's journal, October 12th, 1985," then credits
- All Director's Cut additions that are not mentioned in this list will stay
- Tales of the Black Freighter will be woven throughout the film (assuming it doesn't hurt the pacing of the film too badly)

Here's one thing I already know I'll have trouble with:

It'll be relatively easy to edit Dan out of Rorschach's death with the exception of two shots. First, when Rorschach starts to take his mask off, Dan is in the background, and Dr. Manhattan's glow is in front of Dan. I don't know if I'll be able to erase Dan without fucking up the blue glow. Second, when Manhattan explodes Rorschach, Dan is behind him as he explodes. It will be difficult to erase Dan while keeping all the chunks of Rorschach intact.

Much of the music that I'll be removing will be replaced with Philip Glass - since this precedent is already set by the use of Koyaanisqatsi music during Dr. Manhattan's origin story, I feel it's appropriate.

Any and all suggestions and advice are welcome - that's what I started this thread for, after all. So what do you guys think?

Not bad suggestions, but I disagree with cutting the last line of the film. Having just "Rorschach's journal, October 12th, 1985" is empty, and the line "Tonight, a comedian died in New York" brings the story full circle nicely.

ben_danger said:

the biggest problem with the vader identity for me is the mustafar duel, as its obvious its anakin who is vader, because even if all references to 'vader' by name were removed, it just doesnt add up in obi wans speech in ANH.

BIG RADICAL IDEAS - (if you cannot repel ideas of this magnitude, please look away now)

i like SSWR idea of WINDU taking over the JEDI COUNCIL form yoda. he is constantly distrustful of anakin, and as we should see things from anakins POV, a bit of a dodgy character. we should make it clear that WINDU is percieved to be inadiquate for leadership, and that he is a bit insecure because of this.

these ideas can be chopped and changed, they will requre heavy reconstruction to work (i have included 'a' ideas and 'b' ideas that can work in coherence)

SSWR, if you can make this, i will....well...be very pleased!;)

PART 1

1a - anakin and windu being the only council members remaining on coruscant, go to relieve palpatine of his chancellorship together.

1b - windu goes to to relieve palpatine alone (not arrest, basically what anakin is supposed to do)

PART 2

senators depart his office and everything is very polite. very similar ot other scenes in AOTC.

PART 3 - Palpatines Revelation

a - palpatine reveals he is the sith lord to both anakin and windu. he reveals to anakin that he has the power to save padme, and to windu that 'only through me can you become more powerful than any jedi', bargaining with both of them. windu's line and look from AOTC 'I DONT THINK SO' could be appropriate as a responce.

b - the same as A, but without anakin, so he is only bargaining with windu.

PART 4 - Dealing with Palpatine

a - some other dialogue, leading to the the Jedi and Palpatine fighting.

b - the jedi leave, windu seems shaken and insistent that the must contact yoda, anakin seems more sensible 'no we have to take him NOW' they argue, palpatine smiles from the other side of the door, when they re-enter he will undermine them by saying 'i see you have decided what to do with me' in a kindly patronising tone.

c - if windu is alone, he leaves, contacting anakin via holoprojecotor that he needs assistance to arrest Palpatine. This way windu could seem a bit shifty, as if its a trap.

PART 5 - DUEL I

the fight between the jedi and palpatine continue, until we get to the part where the window is smashed and palpatine is on the floor, he bargains with both the Jedi, who are both pointing their sabers at his throat. he does his force lightening thing, seperating the two out. the lightening stops, and palpatine will say something that changes the expression on windus face. the next part is complicated. the two jedi begin fighting, but it has to be unclear who is attacking and who is defending. in truth it is anakin attacking like in ROTS, just windu this time has a chance to fight back, but to the viewer it is him being the bad guy. we dont see much of the fight, perhaps just shadows on the wall, but palpatine will laugh like in ROTJ at the spectacle. we dont see who wins, in fact, we never see anakin or windu ever again.

-the knighting scene could go ahead still. perhaps if anakin gets electrocted he could lose his hair, so a bald jedi silhouette is seen. it would be good if this new 'vader' is just a bald guy who wheezes due to the lightening?-

PART 6 - VADER KNIGHTED

now much later on, on when obi wan and yoda are in the temple, the see the security recordings as usual, and observe as palpatine knights vader. they look horrified, but not in a sence to give away who vader is, it would be better for yoda to look upset, as the windu-yoda relationship could be like the anakin-obiwan? within the recording, the emperor orders vader to mustafar.

PART 7 - Padme's involvement

a - obiwan requests padmes help to get offworld to mustafar - seems only logical way to get her there?

b - (alternatve is later on, see 9) padme never goes to mustafar, she is away with bail organa on tantive IV, and doesnt die. perhaps obi wan informs her that anakin was killed in a similar way to how he informs luke? we can assume she passes away between III-IV, or maybe on alderaan?

PART 8 - DUEL II

obi wan goes to confront DARTH VADER on mustafar. he is waiting for him on the landing platform as a silhouted form with a red saber. no hair, and he wheezes thus masking his voice. perhaps he says something poignant like 'my Jedi self is dead, I am DARTH VADER now'. they ignite sabers, then the scene fades to something else, thus the duel is cut short, enhancing the mystery but marginalising the significance. we could clips of it within a montage of other actions, as if obi wan is remembering whilst flying away, bu the ultimate part would be VADER's mutilated corpse burning by the lava as obi wan walks away, the screams could bleed into other scenes haunting him.

we dont see what happens to VADER afterwards, so no suiting up. but a daring escape manoever (like ESB) from obi wan in grevious' hotrod from some star destroyers over mustafar would be interesting. the emperor could be stood by the glass and mutter something like 'i sense Lord Vader needs our help' or 'he is still alive'.

PART 9 - Birth of the twin (yes twin not twins...i know that doesnt make sense)

i like the idea of obi wan informing padme of anakins death in the same way he tells luke, but slightly less elaborate or tactful, so when we hear it in 4, we think, "hang on, but in 3 he said this" just so we have an incling that he knows more than he says.

padme is with bail organa on the Tantive IV where obi wan told her to wait safely much earlier in the film

a - padme gives birth to just one baby, but we hear another crying

b - padme gives birth to twins, but the gender and name of baby 2 is kept secret, so we always know luke has a sibling, but not who. i know it sounds daft, but we could have people suspect that han or biggs is an (older looking) twin brother perhaps?:P

- padme shouldnt die in childbirth, i really insist on this, she should just be allowed to fade out of the films. definitly have the birth on dagoba, with yoda waiting behind, and still have the closing scene on tatooine.

- as the closing scene is of obi wan passing baby luke to Lars on tatooine, another scene could have bail organa on alderaan carrying the baby 'number 2' with padme standing alone in the shadows as if she has passed her on.

NOTES

reduced mustafar duel footage could allow for anakin duelling with palpatine footage to be reused.

VADERS voice is obviously from someone who is black, windu is also black

ending should be like ESB i think, with an open ended 'licking our wounds with optimism' feel, not closing loose ends like it was originally.

please read these, its taken me AGES to write them!:S i will try and make some mockup stills to illustrate them.

Interesting ideas. I can definitely see how some of them would help the story.
