Here is a 3 minutes 30 secondes 23M Divx video sample of an EP2 edit I've made. R2 is still flying (but trimmed to the minimum), 3PO still looses his head (but all the awful CGI falling is gone). I tried to make that scene less cartoonish and shorter. But I kept all the informations the original has.

http://rapidshare.com/files/166639224/montage_episode_2.divx

Although in my silent edition I just replaced that scene by the Anakin/Padme/Dooku meeting bonus scene. That way you can also cut all the R2/3PO shots in the arena for they are still waiting in the ship.

That's a good edit, but it made me remember how horrendous Episode II is.

UGH.

Good pacing and editing though, I'll give you that.

(Note: see me in that pic with the other *spit* Royal Guards?).

So? That's nothin'! I'm the man in command with the red lightsaber! ;)

But yeah, this is a sweet pic.

BTW, why are there blue blaster bolts in the pic? Why are some of the troops Sandtroopers? And what the hell are the Royal Guards doing there?

Things are pretty slow, so apparently Laser is EXTREMELY busy with work. I know how that is.

I swear if I could I'd pay that dude's salary just so he could finish his edit.

Oh and yeah, unfortunately removing Ox would be insanely difficult.

But if it were possible, how would it affect the story? I wouldn't miss the character, but how would we find out what happened to Ox?

Luke couldn't have a red lightsaber?

;)

(and for reference, Vader isn't Green in the comic, nor does Leia have flaming red hair, but everyone has a red saber throughout the Marvel Comics run... they were recolored to match the movies in the 1990's Dark Horse remix, though. Also Yoda was blue in the ESB series, and Jabba, irrc, was pinkish, in the ROTJ series).

(Gotta love inaccurate teasers on Comic book covers!)

I'm just teasing about the red sabers, but I thought people might need a nostalgic reminder that they weren't always blue (or even yellow)!

Why does everyone in the Marvel comics look so BAD? I mean, come on! The artists must have had some reference photos, why didn't they follow them? Were they on acid?

While the green lasers would make more sense and help distinguish between the rebels laserfire, red just looks more powerful than green.

EXACTLY! The green lasers is an interesting idea, but the green laser bolts look really weak compared to the red ones.

I've been trying to figure out why this movie doesn't work.

There are action scenes that should be good, but aren't very intense. The plot is mostly ok, with a few flubs, but I could live with that. Even Mutt is quite tolerable (I expected Anakin II).

I want to blame Lucas for a lame alien plot, but you know, it does sort of work in the time period it takes place.

I want to blame Spielberg for failing to articulate the story in the white-knuckle manner we are accustomed, but the action seems to move along well.

I want to blame Harrison Ford for agreeing to Lucas & Spielberg's crap, and looking generally jowly, but I was never afraid he was going to break a hip.

I've decided the blame rests squarely with Janusz Kaminski. His shot composition is terrible. He frequently fails to emphasize the action on the screen, almost like he didn't know where his camera was pointing. For example: the tree cutting blades, the door being blown at Area 51, Mutt jumping vehicles, etc.

It's obvious whoever was responsible could not compose action shot to save their life.

Also, who else is there to blame for the high dynamic range/light blooming? I'd SAY the cinematographer is responsible, but I suppose with so much green screening it could have been Spielberg.

Spielberg MAY have been responsible for the problems in this film, but I don't believe that after all these years Spielberg forgot how to direct.  I'm thinking if we see an Indy 5 it'll have a different DP... or it will suck too.

That being said, in the example scenes I mentioned (and several other), an edit would benefit from strategic cropping/resizing to shift the focus to the action.

Going from an HD source would make this possible, and could fix a lot of the dull action beats.

I agree with you generally. I believe Kaminski is the same reason JP2 didn't work. Dean Cundy did the first one and it's FAR superior.

The editing however is very slow and plodding, there are too many silly jokes, at the expense of good jokes.

But there are also moments that are story related.

For example, When Indiana Jones was getting the Russians to empty their shotgun shells I was excited, expecting this to be a brilliant way to disarm the Russians, so when they go to shoot him all they get is a "click" and they have to reload, allowing Indy to escape... Alas, nope.

The other big problem was that every time a character was picked up, they stayed for the journey.

Raiders is the most superior because the story picks and and puts down characters as needed. Sallah for example never comes to the island. What exactly was the point in having Ox alive and well? Why couldn't he have died in Peru leaving a mystery? Or Indy arrives just before he dies?

Also what was the point in Mac? At least Belloq was clear, but Mac serves no real purpose at all. You could cut Mac out of the entire movie and it wouldn't make any difference at all.

Similarly, why is Spalko a woman? What's the point from a story point of view? There's no sexual tension, and Marion never gets jealous. It could have been a man and the story wouldn't have changed at all.

These are things that prevent the movie from being great, even with a better DP and edit, imo.

Doctor M: I believe you're right. This should be done in the fan edit(s) if possible.

Cyclades: About your "guns clicking" idea, can this be done in the fan edit? It would be a much more interesting scene that way.

As for the cutting out characters, this may seem ridiculous, but what if Oxley and possibly Mac were cut out of the fan edit? First of all, is it possible? Second, would it leave gaps in storyline and continuity?

Love the blooming fixes.

I've been avoiding this thread because I didn't get to see this until a few days ago.

I also like all the ideas in the first post.

My suggestions:

In the jungle chase the tree cutting machine: When it blows up, it's almost unclear what happened. Unfortunately this is one case where MORE footage is needed. I was actually asked by one person what happened and where that spinning blade came from.

In the jungle car chase, Spalko shoots at Indy but shoots her own men: It's very fast, and difficult to see happen. Enhanced gun fire, hits, yells, and muzzle flashes might make the scene work better.

Again the jungle chase, at one point Mutt jumps from his original vehicle to the one with Spalko. It's done in a long shot with lots of CG vegetation in front of it obscuring the shot. (I had to back up while watching to figure out how Mutt changed vehicles.)

Ants hill: Cut the ands forming a tower trying to reach Spalko. It looks REALLY bad.

CG work: Marion has a stupid smirk on her face for 90% of the movie. What the HECK was that about? Was she just happy to be acting again?

Area51: When Indy breaks through the wall of boxes, it's all box material.  It LOOKS like he drove through a single thin wall of empty crates.  More debris, packing material, and odd artifacts need to be added.

Definitely cut 'Trust me'. It was a good line, but she didn't deliver it well.

I definitely agree with everything you said here. Laser, where art thou?

You're actually spot on with what i want to do with that scene. i always felt that the shots should have been in that order. It just makes so much more sense

Now the extra 3PO line that's been mentioned will be remaining. The thing is that this line was in the movie when i went to see it in 1980. I was lucky enough to see the 70mm version about 5 times. Now it always seemed odd to em when i saw the 35mm version and then the home video releases that this line was suddenly gone. None of my mates every believed me when i told them about this extra line, as well as a few other differences in both dialogue and the end sequence being shorter.  I guess it all comes down to what version you are most familiar with. I've also never got use to Leia saying " I know where Luke is" instead of repeating "we've got to go back" when they rescue Luke from Cloud City

Work is just flying along at the moment. I've even been able to re-create the original Emperor scene in HD for my AVCHD release of Empire. I posted the link in that thread but if anyone wants to see it then here is the link:

Can someone please upload this to YouTube? I'm having trouble watching it.

It's the final punctuation for the series of dialogue leading up to it.  The rebels have debated up to this point whether or not there is anything more they can currently do for Commander Skywalker and Captain Solo.  They finaly decide that they have to think of what is most important, which means leaving Luke and Han's survival up to themselves.  This is a huge, heartbreaking moment for the characters involved and, just to make sure the audience knows "Yes, we are going to leave Luke and Han all alone" we have the dramatic closing of the blast doors sequence.  It leaves us wondering if there really is any hope for our two heroes and makes the revelation that they did, in fact, survive the night all the more satysfying.

Well said.

No C-3PO until ROTS? That's interesting, but how will he suddenly appear? Will he be a minor character?

A different ending for ROTJ? You must tell us more!

This stuff is way too interesting to not talk about until years later!
