So, by your logic, we should not worry about George Lucas messing up Star Wars again? because the film world is filled with Special Editions and stupid sequels and prequels?

I am talking about a common process in movie music : the temptrack

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temp_track

...it has nothing to do with the quality of the final product...just the fact that there is nothing new in movie music because producer and director said : "we want this , a music exactly like this one..."

even Williams - wich is a genius for me - "steals" (to take your word) ideas from other composer (classic composers, or old movie composers)

I think a new theme would be better than a theme steal, its rather lazy writing.

and I liked your variations so far because...well... they are varitations of themes already in STAR WARS (Vader's theme, Luke and Leia, Leia's theme, and the Imperial Motif), this is a variation of a theme that is not in star wars, so it does not mesh well.

I understand your point, and you are right. But you have to know how and why I come to this : to find inspiration, good mood...I used a temptrack on the sequence on which I want to work. This time I used "Leaving home" and it matches the sequence so perfectly that I did not want to lose this. That's why I stay as close as possible.

But as I have already said : with another orchestration the resemblance will not be so noticeable

and it's not a question of laziness : it's a really hard work... sometime it's more easy to create something 100 % new

BTW I do not think you should be so dead set on using certain ideas and not taking the criticism and working more on them more, remember Binary Sunset had to be re-written because it did not fit the scene, if Williams had objected to rewriting it,

and who will pay me for my work ? ; )

a film composer can't do what he want on an official project...he can't create exactly the music he want, and he can't refuse re-writting. First of all, he must satisfy the director and the producer.

This is not really comparable with what I am doing here...I am just here for fun.

but be sure that I am taking seriously all criticism..., sometime it open my eyes on new things, sometine I just disagree.

Williams work, and movie music in general is filled with references, influences, copy/paste... from classial repertory and from other movie composer. When you know this, you no longer take it too seriously and you stop jumping from your chair each time you hear something close to another, or copy/paste.

2. The theme will no longer come out of nowhere during the final duel.

3. We'd be so used to hearing it so friendly and "good", that hearing it so apocalyptic with a choir while these brothers duel to the death would be extra heart-breaking.

it's a good idea, but for now, I am not sure if I will let Battle of the heroes in my cut...as I already said, I like it, brillant work, but not enough Star Wars IMO

Now it sounds like "Parade of the Slave Children" meets "Leaving Home"

I am glad ! I am not working here to create something new, very personal...but trying to fit Williams style.

how many things in Williams work sounds close to other ? sometime there is unsubtle copy/paste with minor change...so, where is the problem if I do the same ? I don't understand.

and the ending crash.

This is very common in Star wars, that why I used it.

if I had posted this first :

no one would have recognized Superman soundtrack (Leaving home)

This is an heroic variation of the frienship theme for the space battle sequence.

The purpose of my frienship's theme is not heroism (even if it will have heroic version). It's all about feeling, frienship feeling...something simple, pure, naive, that just talk about the true emotion between our heroes.

and I didn't hide the fact that this music is heavily inspired by Superman, nothing new here...but this is not the same theme, the second half part is completely new and there are some differences in the harmonies.

The thing that make it really close to Superman is because it's exactly the same orchestration.

The colours in padme's shot give the clue that the shot is from another movie. You plan to do something about that cutter? Maybe increasing the saturation?

Yes many things can be done here -  I tinkered quickly some knobs on Sony Vegas to make a color correction, without knowing exactly what I was doing...but I am confident, someone else with good skill can do a great job here.

Nice to hear. Would you consider an alternative choir though? Maybe one that sings a crescendo? It now somehow has a haunted ghost sound...

ah ah ! well, seen this way...

the new soundtrack I am working on is still work in progress, things may change, I need time to think and make the necessary improvements.

this is not an easy challenge to try to "get into" Williams head and created a music that is not offensive to him.

Personally, I think the choir in the beginning sounds more threatening than sad.

I do however love the lower key 'echo' in the theme.

(Cutter, I know I've asked this before, but could you give us all a rough estimate of when all this eye/ear-candy is finished? :P)

The choirs have not the purpose to sound sad, but mysterious and magic - The sad part is only with Padme's shot. I want here something tourmented and it doesn't work with the real Leia's theme, it's too "beautiful and peacefull"

The edit will be released few months after the blu-ray release

NO, don't make a permanent change to Leia's theme...

Yes...my master

It was a joke ("not if the real Leia' s theme becomes now a variation of this one ;" ) I don't want to make a permanent change to Leia's theme... just thinking about a way to introduce it  before my sad version...so we can clearly understand that this is only a variation, an expression of Padme's sadness.

My only suggestion is that you try to quickly end Leia's theme when you move to Obi-Wan carrying Luke on Tatooine.  It's about Luke now, not Leia.  The transition into the binary sunset theme is pretty rushed.

I will see what I can do with the transition.

Concerning Leia's theme, it's not really a problem; because the music at this moment tell us a story and it fits the mood of the sequence.

We have this kind of things in the OT, for example in ESB, the Yoda's theme at Bespin, at the end of the movie.

and when introducing a theme for almost the first time, you don't want such drastic variations so soon.

not if the real Leia' s theme becomes now a variation of this one ; )

I understand what you mean, and I thought about this before starting my work.: I don't know exactly when, maybe during the birth of twins, but I will use Leia's theme before this sad version

I would remove everything about Obi-Wan. We see just Padme getting onboard and starting.

 +1

Yes I got what you mean - and don't worry, everything that could be improve with the music will be...more tension, more emotion.

I'm working right now on something I've always wanted  : Obi-wan and Anakin's theme (or Master and Apprentice)...a friendship theme.

it is impossible to really increase the feeling of friendship between the two Jedi by just working the cut. Only the music can do that, a new leitmotiv.

if I can reach exactly what I want, this new theme will appear in AOTC and ROTS. It will support some dialogues between them  and bring more emotion.

But having you considering putting that line in EPII, I guess that could be interpreted as your official statement that you'll eventually get to AOTC?? :)

I don't want to put that line in Episode 2 - Just ask if it makes sense to put this at the end of war.

I am working on Phantom menace and Attack of the clones (90%) - but I am not yet happy with this...each time I see my edit, I want to change/remove things. I will first finish ROTS and then go back to the two first episodes.

My cut of AOTC lenght only 1h20 min...I removed all the fu....g romance ^_^

and, maybe it will interest you, the three Lord of the rings (100 %)
