Star Wars Saga: Silent Film Edition (Released)
Time

Thanks jedi_jra. :)

In fact I'm planning to do the old treatment to the original trilogy, too. Because to me this edit is one big movie. But I understand your feeling about the prequels being like an old dream vision.

As for the yellow tint. Well, it's the same tint as the other test clips and pictures that I posted before. And it is indeed a bit yellow. The real sepia color is in fact much more close to red, and I feel this "B&W/yellow" tint is quite good to be the main color of this version of my edit. Maybe the clean environment of the Obi/Maul duel gives another feeling to it.

I wouldn't do much more with that. It's mono and it has a consistent crackle to it. (which shows up a lot when it gets quiet, which is nice) To do much more could get into 'overboard' territory. ;)

Agree.

I will share soon a short video (without sound for now) of the Obi/Maul's duel. I added a 18 fps filter, and I must say it looks good!

But god it takes time to render with all these filters! If I want to do an average 2 pass encoding, it takes almost 1 minute per second...

I also doubt that anyone would be able to pull this off in an effective and seamless manner.

Well, maybe just a change in the text crawl could explain the Maul/Grievous connection. It's not like we really need a Grievous with Maul's make up or things like that (although the previous pictures looked great). We can also keep the name Grievous. After all it could be the real name of Darth Maul before he was a Sith. Then, now he's not a Sith anymore, after his fall confronting Obi-Wan, he is called by his real name again. Just an idea.

Is there a way to make the film shake? Is that included in the scripts you're currently using? I think that could help a little.

The plugin I use can make the film shake, but I can't find a way to adjust it (it's too shaky for my taste, and it don't works on Premier Pro though). So I made a black an white video of the dust, noise, brightness vibration and vertical lines from that plugin and use it as an alpha layer on Premiere Pro. So the result does not shake at all. However, I think it could be cool to find a way to have some shake, but not during all the movie.

there is a filter called "radio" that gives it that tinny, scratchy, inside-a-tunnel sound. Or maybe something like a single speaker phonograph or projector sound. Might want to play around with something like that.

I'll take a look at it.

Has any thought been given to the music in the next version? Will it be the same quality, or will you use some sort of dirty mono version, maybe? Or if there's enough room, maybe add both tracks and make them selectable? Hmm?! :p

I think it could be fun, but ,as Ringo said, one of the purpose of the edit is to enjoy Williams score. So the "dirty mono" should indeed be available as an alternate selectable audio mix. I will try to find time to work on making the sound old. I still don't know how.

(Still I have to reframe my french clean version, cause even in french there was still some grammatical faults! lol)

Thanks for your thoughts.

I think I will stay B&W but with the omnidirectional light. I still like the idea of colored cards, but finaly I think the viewers eyes will get used to the B&W cards through most of the movie, so changing their color, even within a colored scene, could be distracting. In other words: in trying to be "color consistent" the final result could be the opposite.

Yeah, but Vader's just sick of being the Emperor's puppet - he's power-hungry at this point and wants to rule on his own, not be the underling of someone he knows will never relinquish power. He knows, however, that he's not powerful enough on his own to stop the Emperor - but with Luke at his side, they may win. It has nothing to do with the "rule of two.

Yeah that's true, you can see it that way or (now that we know the PT "rule of two" ) that Vader is also trying to "save his skin" by turning Luke into his own apprentice before the Emperor does. I know that is probably not what Lucas had in mind when he shoot that scene in ESB, but now that we have to deal with the prequels I just try to find ways to live with them ;)

However I'm not against cutting that rule in a PT fan edit.

Yoda should NEVER be seen with a lightsaber. Ever.

Even if I like watching the Sidious/Yoda fight, I understand your thought about that.

In my Silent Star Wars fan-edit I choose to let the end of the order 66 as the only moment we see Yoda with a lightsaber, because it's quick, elegant, Yoda don't wast time and energy jumping everywhere and he goes straight to the point. Even an old Jedi could do such a thing: focusing all his energy into a quick fighting move.

The only problem I have with all his fights in the PT is that in ROTJ Yoda dies at 900 because he's old and weak, so in ROTS he's something like 880... How could he turn from a fighting Jedi full of energy to a dying old creature in "only" 20 of his years? A bit strange.

I need your toughts about 2 things :

1 - Do you think the text cards must also be tinted the same color as the scenes they're into or simply stay black and white sepia all the time?

2 - Do you think the omnidirectional lightning must be added to all the text cards? (cause I find that kind of nice, but maybe a bit "eye distracting"?)

I just need to do a moving camera (pan style) preview to choose if I keep the omnidirectional lightning (in some interior, close-up scenes) or not.

almost all sci-fi cheats (including all the star wars series), by

just putting all the dialogue (*ok, with a few subtitles) in english

so we can follow it..

there's no easy solution.......

In the Farscape TV series, the main human character don't understand what the creatures says, until some "liquide translator" is injected in his veins! That way, all the creaures can understand each others. I found that funny!

Perhaps more "dusty" pictures in the next hours.

Torrents page will be back in 8 hours.

I think I finished my french cards version.

Still working on the episode1 "dusty" version. (blue tint for underwater/Gungan City - Yellow/orange tint for Tatooine - and red tint for Gui Gon funeral - the rest of the movie is the same sepia tint as the pictures posted here before. I also changed a bit the luminosity filter, now centered toward the middle of the picture when scenes focus on few caracters, scpecialy in interior.

Some told me that they have difficulties extracting the zip files from my rapidshare links.

They were made using "7-zip" (free program) and it extract them well too. So try this program if you have troubles. I'll see if I could do other compresed share with a regular WinRar program.

someone said "The files didn't show up as regular RAR files, so WIN RAR wasn't going to work. I combined all the files with HJ Split and extracted them with the computer's default zipped folders program." Hope it'll help.

Tell me if you have troubles too.

The Clone Wars (2008 animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

I've seen the first five. It's okay, colorfull, good pace. The animation is sometimes good when it comes to the action parts but most of the time awfull when a humanoid character simply walks from point A to point B like a zombie.

I understand those who said that we don't care for characters like Yoda because we know they can not die, but in the meantime it is not the point of this series. The point is (aside from selling toys) for each episode to teach a little moral to the kids.

The filmmakers would use several different filters throughout the film to denote either mood or time of day.

I think it could be a great idea.

Kind of easy to do, totaly in the spirit of the version, and could bring diversity and beauty to the project. Now it will be difficult to choose where and when... Because I don't want dark red pictures each time Vader arrives, nor pink filter when Anakin kiss Padme! lol. It also must be from time to time, when the mood needs a real change like on dagobah; the picture could be...green! lol. So we could finaly see a green yoda in this edit! I don't know, just a thought. I still needs tests on this changing color idea.

The edit could have a (subtle) color filter for each planet(yellow/orange for Tatooine, blue/grey for coruscant etc...) Then some added changes for special scenes when the mood needs a real change.

thanks Ripplin, I'll check your email.

Perhaps you could try fading the borders of the picture to make it look like it was shot with an old-time lens

Yes Nanner Split, I also thought about that, I think I could do this sort of thing on some scenes with claustrophobia feeling (like inside the wampa's cave for exemple).

find a way to remove, say, one out of every four or five frames, to make the movement look choppier.

I will give it a try. But my old cinema filter don't give much choice about the frame-rate, and I don't use it directly but as an alpha layer on premiere pro (just to get the scratches and noise). So I'll check if Premiere Pro can do what you said.
