TMBTM's "The War of the Stars"; a Star Wars "grindhouse" cut (Released)

it might have worked better if you just used Puggo's version and adjusted the rest of the footage to match.

This is exactely what I have done, I just zoomed/cropped the Puggo Grande, that's all. But I agree with your other points (specialy boobs...!)

My "workprint" featured a scene with obvious flipped shots, but I cutted the scene for the edit to be shorter.

So TMBTM, any chance we'll be seeing a grindhouse cut of Alien? If so, what titles would you consider? "The Alien Body Invader" "Alien Parasites from Planet X." Something more generic and convoluted than "Alien," more in line with the 50's-60's schlock space monster movies. We've already got a great double feature going on here with War of the Stars and Jaws Sharksploitation, but I'd love to see what's next. ;)

The next edit will be a relative "normal" one: Peter jackson's King Kong with hopefuly the same lenght as the original 1933 one (1h40).

I use the old movie as a basis and try to use the scenes of the 2005 movie that fit the original the best. So it will not be a "full of surprises" edit this time. Maybe I could make a black and white 4:3 version if there is interest in. Still, there is already a good B&W shorter "vintage" version of King Kong, made by Gekko, at fanedit.org. But my cut will be different.

I have no plan to make another grindhouse edit for now. But who knows?

New HDTV Broadcasts?
Time

The 6 Star Wars movies will be broadcast in france in the following weeks.

I'm afraid that logo could be seen on the picture:

http://upload.wikimedia.org" />

Hope it will only be on the black bars (and hopefuly not at all.)

It's an HD chanel, but sometime they broadcast standard definition movies I believe, so I really don't know, I only guess it's an HD version.

I can't record it, but my father can (though he has never recorded a full movie in HD). I'll ask him to do some test this week end. But I can't promise anything.

TMBTM's "The War of the Stars"; a Star Wars "grindhouse" cut (Released)
Time

Edit is released at fanedi.org: http://fanedit.org/8392/

This is a "grindhouse" version of George Lucas's Star Wars (episode 4 A New Hope)
Some of the deleted scenes, alternate takes and behind the scene footage are now back in the movie.
New music.
New special effects.
key scenes have been reorganized.

Original runtime: 124 min.
Amount of time cutted (including credits): 43 min.
Amount of time added (including some alternate takes): 16 min.
New runtime: 97 min.

Note:
To complete a "grindhouse double feature" I needed a second movie.
(First JAWS: The Sharksploitation Edit, now The War Of The Stars: A New Hope Grindhoused)
When you talk about "grindhouse double feature" Planet Terror/Death Proof comes to mind,
and what people usualy says?... "Damn, Planete Terror was fun, but Death Proof was a bore!"

Personally I like Death Proof a lot but I can understand why people felt it was boring.
I hope this edit will not bore you too much!
I took as an advice a comment on my JAWS edit who said it was "too long for mockery"
so I made the overal lenght quite short this time.

I want to thanks Puggo for letting me use his 16mm preservation work, known as The Puggo Grande.
I just zoomed and cropped it for it to have a more "Star Warsish" aspect ratio.
(so the picture quality of the Puggo Grande is better, I wanted to point out that fact.)
Only I think that quality loss helped me a lot to blend some documentary footage back in the movie.

And THAT is one of the main purpose of this edit: to bring back a lot of deleted scenes and various footage.
Does it make it a better movie? Hell no. This is a cheap version of Star Wars. Hopefully fun for the fans to watch.

In the bonus of the DVD you'll find a little slideshow video showing some of the various shots added.
Please do NOT watch this video before the edit itself!

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!

Last we heard, Lucas was put off by the sheer per-minute cost of the conversion, especially since he's looking at 12 hours of it. Anybody know if the cost has gone down significantly in the last year or two?

I don't know, but I heard Ridley Scott wants to convert his futur Robin Hood in 3D...

What would be the point in converting a new movie in 3D before its release (instead of shooting it directely with 3D camera) if the cost of the conversion is so high?  So I think the cost has gone down (or Ridley has gone stupid).

Looks good so far.

You can push it more radical if you wish :)

Ca we expect effects like grindhouse(burned films in key plot scenes, commercials and shaking camera)?

I love the lightsaber coloring btw :D

-Angel

Thanks.

There is one burned film sequence, but I did not find a really good fun moment to put it in I'm afraid; Let's say that I'm not too proud to use this kind of "dated joke" again. lol. I did not add shaky camera movements, but there are some new special effects here and there, but not too much.

The edit runs 1h37 with the end credits, and will surely be available next week.

Hey everyone.

Here's a little something that you may enjoy. It's a little something I threw together for fun. A REALLY short version of "The Phantom Menace" with a twis ending.

There is a "fake" trailer for a JAWS and STAR WARS grindhouse double feature on youtube. It has nothing to do with me (and is way older than my JAWS edit). I think it is cool.

I don't post the link here, cause I don't want people to think it is mine, but you'll find it quite easily I think. Maybe it is what rcb saw (?)

Possible news of new Star Wars EU movies
Time

RANDOM HEARTS is the worst Ford movie (to me), a boring piece fo sh..

I kind of like his effort to change from his "good guy" characters type of roles in What Lies Beneath, even if the movie itself is just an "okay" ripoff of Hitchcock's work.

I agree that Mosquito Coast is THE Harrison Ford best work as an "accomplished" actor.

Regarding Henry is not bad at all, too.

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

Here are some little tests I've done some months ago on my silent edition. It's not really good, but maybe could help to understand the concept of 2D to 3D.

 original:

Depth map (quickly hand made on photoshop):

second eye (made on photoshop using Filter>Distort>Displace horizontal -3 and choosing the depth map as displacement map):

anaglyph result:

animated gif:

A new test made with Triaxes stereoTracer...
As a pair of "stereo" pictures I simply put 2 consecutive frames of my Star Wars scene.
The result was this depth map (the grey bar at the center is simply the restriction of the unregistered version):

And still with StereoTrace I generated 5 frames and made an animated Gif out of them:

While there are some obvious very bad unwanted distortions, I think it's pretty amazing giving the poor amout of difference that the two original pictures has.

"The War of the Stars" - sounds like a new celebrity reality show.. ;)

:)

yes, someone already told me that.

It's the exact translation of the french title "la guerre des étoiles".

Although in french the meaning his more like "the war from the stars" rather than stars actualy fighting (!)

IIRC Magnoliafan claimed he would be able to make the reveal work by subtly editing the Ben/Luke conversation. I'm not sure he ever revealed what the intended wording was.

I have done that in my Grindhouse edit of A New Hope (release probably in January), but for it to work in the revisited saga Adywan would need to make this change in ANH revisited, but as I say I would not like to change the original that much in the "revisted univers". So, yes,  it's tricky to make the father reveal to work in EP5 without editing ANH.
