Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion
Time
Karyudo,

thanks for your long and detailed answers to my questions (and for sharing my joke). One thing I still don't get: if regions are independent of video standards, and region 2 includes both PAL and NTSC areas, what resolution are region 2 DVDs at?

True, if the following two things are also true:

1) The PAL telecine session is as good as or better than the NTSC session; and
2) A PAL LD player exists that is as good as or better than the best available NTSC one.

I can tell you from direct experience that it is unclear that (1) is true, and that (2) is (unfortunately) almost certainly not true. We're trying, though...

1) Does this have anything to do with the cropping issue of the PAL LDs vs NTSC LDs as seen at the end of the screenshots feedback thread?
2) I take it from this that the X0 and X9 players are NTSC only?

Does anyone have access to the prints in the Library of Congress?
All three of the complete, true original editions are preserved there (so it's said) in great quality. The Star Wars print is even the "Pre-ANH" version.

Surely gaining access to these would be a simple matter of waiting for a gala to take place at the library, causing an alarm related to the prints to seem to malfunction by using a laser built into a handycam so they would be removed from high security for investigation, gaining access to the gala by posing as a workman with an ID created in photoshop from a blown-up photo of a real workman, getting the librarian in charge's thumbprint on a glass and transferring this to a plastic thumb cover to gain access to the secure elevator?

Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion

Having read all the above, I am much more informed than I was about DVD technology - thank you. However, I am still slightly confused about DVD regions vs. video standards and I'm sure you guys know all about this, so...

1) Are region 1 DVDs in NTSC resolution and region 2 in PAL resolution (in which case why the new names)?
2) If so, do multi-region players therefore scale between these standards in real-time?

From what I previously knew and what I have learned here, it seems as if:

a) the best possible LD>DVD transfer should start with a PAL LD, regardless of the eventual region/standard of viewing;
b) from there, an anamorphic DVD would be best for all 16:9 TV owners, a letterboxed DVD for most 4:3 owners;

Please correct me if I am wrong. Another question that then arises is:

3) Which is better for NTSC viewers, PAL disc played on multi-region player with player's real-time scaling or NTSC disc made from PAL transfer?

If the answer is, as I suspect, the latter, would this mean that any transfer would ideally exist in 4 versions (PAL AM, PAL LB, NTSC AM, NTSC LB)?

Once again, thank you all for sharing your technical know-how.

Moth3r,

that's a great screencaps interface you have there - it makes it so easy to compare the caps directly. I'd be interested to hear others' analysis of the comparison between these caps.

To my eyes, three of those captures look good in different ways: TR47, EditDroid & Moth3r. The other three are softer and/or noisier. The TR47 and EditDroid caps look almost identical in softness/sharpness, with TR47s being a little brighter, more saturated and a little noisier (perhaps due to the brightness/saturation?). Of these two, I think I prefer the look of the EditDroid caps, although there is some artifacting not present in the TR47 caps (see twin sunset suns). Your caps definitely look sharpest of all, and have nice colours. The only odd thing is that the frame is cropped so differently to the others, showing less of the frame all the way around. I assume this is to do with the PAL LD cropping, since the others are all from NTSC sets. Does anyone know how these crops compare to the theatrical versions?

Keep up the great work and thank you so much for creating a PAL version.

DVD Cover Project

Hey, ChainsawAsh - these are some of the best OT covers I've seen - and I've seen a lot. I am working on a set of covers right now, which I'll post here when they're done. My original plan was to use 2 alternate posters for front and back covers, like you've done. Maybe I should have stuck with that - these look great! You can usually get hi-res scans just by google image searching e.g. "Empire Strikes Back Poster" and setting the advanced search option to high or medium file size. Watch out for color balance, contrast, brightness & saturation on downloaded stuff though, you'll want to compare it to a known source and will probably have to tweak it. I think you're right that the GWTW poster is best for front, but there are a few to choose from for the back. BTW, have you noticed that there are two slightly different versions of the RotJ "B" poster (the one on your front cover). In one, Lando is bigger and there are slight changes to the faces on Luke, Han & Leia. Anyone know the story here?

Moth3r,
I'm new to the forum (at least new to posting - I've been trying to read everything in Original Trilogy Preservation so I'm up to speed before posting). So far I only have the TR47 set (Rowman remix). I'm looking forward to the Cowclops set and either of the XO versions, but from the screenshots I've seen, yours look the best. Since I'm originally from the UK, I'm especially interested in a PAL transfer. I've been working on some OT covers for a while in photoshop, planning to offer them here as my small contribution to the awesome stuff you guys are doing. They aren't tied to any set as yet, so I'd be happy to adapt them to yours or create new ones for you if you have a specific design in mind.
