.: The X0 Project Discussion Thread :. (* unfinished project *)
Time
Hi guys,

been away for a couple of months and so to catch up I just re-read this entire thread. Phew! I have a couple of questions for Laserman/Zion/MeBeJedi (if and when they have time) which I couldn't find answers to in the preceding 36 pages:

1) You earlier said that you were working from Definitive Collection captures, but were trying to get "Faces" captures done on the X0 as well so as to be able to use the best of both - did this ever happen?

2) Are you still working on PAL capture comparisons and if so, might you end up mixing PAL & NTSC sourced material, or would it be a separate PAL project?

3) Given Citizen's (and others') misgivings about temporal smoothing on both the DefCol & "Faces" sets, as well as the positive reaction to Dark/Sega's Special Collection transfer, would that set be another option you'd like to investigate, or are there:
a) other problems with that set?
b) no chances of further X0 capturing?

Apologies in advance if any of these seem redundant.

3:2 on laserdisc question

Both my last two budget players were quite happy to play back PAL encoded discs in NTSC .

Anyhow, if PAL films are generally stored progressive but at 25 fps and a PAL/NTSC player plays PAL discs at PAL speed in NTSC, then the player must be doing some kind of pulldown other than 3:2, or dropping a frame every second - or am I missing something?

3:2 on laserdisc question

I didn't want to hijack Farsight's thread any more, so I've dragged this into a more appropriate thread:

All decent film DVDs are stored as 24fps on the disc itself. No DVDs store anything as progressive, it is an interlaced system - but the two fields stored make up exactly one film frame, so the end result is the same really.

First of all, thank you Laserman and Citizen for your answers. I don't think either of you answered my second question, probably because I phrased it badly, so I'll try to get at what I mean a different way, informed by your previous answers:

Does a PAL/NTSC DVD player play PAL discs on NTSC displays at true speed or PAL speed?

Okay, this is nothing to do with Farsight's set, but it kind of follows on from the above: how does on-the-fly PAL to NTSC conversion work? Are PAL DVDs generally encoded at 24fps progressive, with the PAL player converting to 25fps? If so, does the PAL/NTSC player apply 3:2 pulldown to get to 29.97 at true speed, or is it somehow still played at PAL's 104% speed?

Farsight, I'm with you on your official DVD analysis (see also this thread).

Also, you're right, screencaps and playback are two different things. I said above I thought EditDroid had the edge on TR47, but that was on screencaps. I just got through a playback comparison of the two and I've got to give it to TR47. The EditDroid is a little overprocessed-looking and a bit too washed out. Oh well, I guess they're both going to stay on the shelf now that Cowclops/TR47 v.2 is out.

Idea: Library of Congress Film Preservation access?

Unfortunately, we can't watch the cleaned version without the color "correction" so it's pretty much a moot point. Personally, brightness, contrast and color balance affect my enjoyment more than dust, scratches or grain. When I saw the movies in the theater, they were dusty, scratched and grainy, but they weren't strangely dark and didn't have weird pseudo-technicolor. I seem to remember seeing stars in the space scenes, too.

The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)

IIRC, it's:

1) Luke/Treadwell
2) Luke/Biggs/Camie/Fixer
3) Luke/Biggs
4) Alternate cantina edit

Similar to the stuff which is on "Deleted Magic" except that the alternate cantina is not intercut with the 2004 DVD and is thus much more watchable.

Also, RowMan's forthcoming RowDroid ESB extras disc contains some great stills from the Wampas in Echo Base scenes.

I've just been l00king back at Hurin's p0st 0f the 0fficial DVD vs. X0 screencaps and I've g0t t0 say W0W! I always th0ught that LD rips w0uld never be quite as g00d quality as an 0fficial release but y0u guys have pr0ved that wr0ng. 0n the basis of this frame, the XO versi0n l00ks better than the 0fficial 0ne. I mean technically better. T0 me, the c0l0r/brightness/c0ntrast "c0rrecti0n" on the 2OO4 DVDs makes them l00k t0tally different t0 h0w I remember the m0vies and thus invalidates them as s0urce material for a preservati0n (N0 disrespect t0 mverta, 0cpm0vie, ADigitalMan, DarthEdit0us and c0., wh0 have d0ne great things with them). I remember when mverta's legacy pr0ject was seen as the H0ly Grail, with a l0t 0f p0sts 0n the lines 0f "h0w I wish he'd release this." Well, f0r me, THIS is the H0ly Grail and it l00ks like as g00d as it will ever get. Gentlemen, I salute y0u, 0ne and all.
