.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time
It stands to reason that the pre-THX widescreen discs would be noisier, as they didn't have noise reduction applied (at least not to the DefCol level). DavisDVD has this to say about the DefCol:
One drawback to this CAV set is that the first film suffers from too much noise reduction (for an example of this see Luke's lightsaber during his training with the remote onboard the Millennium Falcon).
and this about the "Faces" edition:
Uses the same letterbox transfer as the "Definitive Collection" CAV box set, only with the noise reduction greatly reduced.

This would suggest that the "Faces" set should be a better source than the DefCol. However, Grinder's report about the pre-THX set notices:
- the absence of motion smearing, this is very evident
- the presence of stars, especially those in the opening shot of SW

so isn't it possible that these could be made to look even better than "Faces"?

Help Wanted: WWII style edit of ANH - I need a title for this!
Time
Some suggestions:

If you're going to have all the dialogue in French and/or German, the title should be in that language too - I suggest French, as they'll be the heroes. I don't think you should just use "La Guerre des Etoiles", though, the title should somehow reflect the WWIII idea.

If it's meant to be like an old French war movie, you should have French subtitles for the German and English dialogue in the 2.35:1 area (over the picture) and English subs outside the 2.35:1 area (in the black "letterbox" area) - but you might want to keep these inside 1.78:1 for those with 16:9 TV sets.

The crawl should also be in French with English subs.

RotS: Secret Keeper Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time
While I think that The Bizzle may be right and the twist may not be able to be preserved successfully, I applaud Ell (and MagFan and ADM) for the time and energy he will have to put into this project. It's as good an idea for a fan edit as any other and constitutes a bona fide entry into one of the two main subjects of this forum. The prequels don't make sense as they are now, so why not try alternatives. Even if it's not perfect, Ell and others will no doubt enjoy watching it. So I say good luck to you.

RotS: Secret Keeper Edition (* unfinished project *)

I make no secret of the fact that I'm no fan of the PT. However, both your suggestions 1) & 2) above would improve RotS. The secret(s) would still be pretty obvious, even to a new viewer, before ESB, but the slight element of mystery would help the audience to enjoy the revelations when they came, rather than (ahem) feeling they were just watching a previously told story.
I also like daveytod's idea. Taken together, these three would help remove some of the worst moments of RotS, namely: the two "birth" scenes (the twins and Vader), Leia on Alderaan and Luke on Tatooine.
