It just seemed unnecessary to show Vader going into the suit. I had the impression from the OT that he had become who he is over the years, rather than in one fell swoop and then just remaining the same for 18 years while Luke grew up (while the Death Star was undergoing extensive testing?). All that stuff at the end of RotS was unnecesary. I know what happens at the beginning of Star Wars and I can fill in the blanks without being shown everything I already know and can imagine better.

Ultimately, Palpatine has to be behind the clone order, whether acting through Dooku or not. So Obi-Wan has to be unable to connect the clones to Palpatine (or anyone else) but needs to be intrigued enough to follow Jango to Geonosis to investigate. The name of Sifo Dyas, a former Jedi Council member, who is now dead, provides the lack of connection, the unknown "Tyranus" provides the intrigue.

Using the name of Qui-Gon, as Commander Courage suggested, provides both, without making reference to a character who is otherwise absent from the movies. It also provides Obi-Wan with a more personal motivation to get to the bottom of the mystery.

These are good points. If Maul was seen as Gunray's henchman, with Sidious out of the picture, it would mirror the relationship between Tarkin, Vader and Palpatine in ANH.

No, Qui Gon is also cut.

The suggestion of making Maul into General Grievous is not about saving lame characters-- it's about adding another level to two of the most memorable characters in the entire PT. Now if this were about Making Boss Nass into Jabba the Hutt, you'd have a point.

I've never heard anyone say Jabba the Hutt was a bad villain. If that's what you're saying, I say I disagree.
