1977 70mm soundtrack recording (Released)
Time
Phase-accurate syncing from independently vari-speeded sources is extremely difficult and mind-numbingly time consuming.

[moth3r] That's impossible, even for a computer [/moth3r]

[mebejedi] It's not impossible, I used to sync concerts on my PC back home, that's not much easier than phase accuracy [/mebejedi]

Phasing can also make the mix sound considerably different, although that effect will be reduced here due to the fact that the two tracks are cross-contaminated.

Noise reduction filters should not be applied during telecine, but that doesn't mean they weren't. After all, classic films' negatives should not be taken apart to make unrecoverable changes...

Still, I appreciate your optimism about this and the dual-layer issue - and I hope you're right.

What are you going to do with your SE discs?
Time
I don't think you'll get everyone to agree on the wording and I think individual letters would be better in some ways. My advice would be to keep your letters as brief and to the point as possible, as long as they mention:
1) you bought the set for the OUT;
2) you'd buy it again on an HD format.
Sending the discs back is an unequivocal insult to the SE and enough of a statement of displeasure. I don't think snide comments will help in any way.

I actaully PREFER seeing the black bars, even on my widescreen TV.

When watching a non-anamorphic DVD on a widescreen tv with the black bars on all sides, does this mean you are NOT losing any picture due to the overscan of the tv?

Yeah, you're not losing any of the picture information- just 1/3 of the resolution.
Actually, you're not losing any resolution in these circumstances.

Whoah! EditDroid bonus material. This I'd like to see. What "other additional material" have they done?

I believe Rikter did a transfer of the US LDs for the first two Making Ofs. RowMan, are those the ones on your v2 bonus discs?

The subtitle masking is definitely an ocp-style project, but it might end up being a lot of work for little reward, as the patching would still be distracting.

I'm pretty sure that the IP used for the DC masters was used to replace parts of the o-neg for the "new" SE negative. However, since it was a negative being made, those segments would have been duped from the IP, leaving it intact in itself. This was the first generation IP from the original negative, which is why it was chosen for the DC masters (at the time it was considered the best single source). Why it was chosen over the dye-transfer print (which was also struck from the o-neg) I don't know. Which is in better shape now is another question. However, it seems there are at least two good 2nd generation sources intact.
