Selectable crawl on new DVD? Or just the old one?
Time
Thanks for those, Harlock415. I think everyone agrees EditDroid is the best letterboxed NTSC LD transfer so far. But it looks like better sharpness, contrast and color on the official discs (as you would expect). It would be great if you could find time to make some more screencaps, especially if they matched those on The NEW "official" Screenshots thread or Moth3r's comparison page.

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...

ESHBG, you want your DVD player set to 16:9. The names of Zoom settings vary from set to set, but it's pretty esy to flip through them to find the best one - there will be one that upscales the letterboxed image to fill the right amount of your screen. Yes, it will be relatively straightforward to make fanamorphic(TM) DVDs from the September discs - they will have the advantages of better scaling that cannot presently be done in real-time, but the disadvantage of re-encoding an already compressed image. Which will ultimately look better will depend on:
how good your real-time scaler is;
who makes the fanamorphic disc (and how);
how good the original compression is.

No, actually I was referring to the fact that anamorphic DVDs have the same overall resolution as fullscreen DVDs (720x480), with the result that the selected portion for the fullscreen edition will actually use more of those horizontal pixels for the same picture area than the anamorphic image will. This is what has led some to suggest combining fullscreen and letterboxed LD rips for increased resolution in part of the image (a bad idea in my opinion but technically possible).

See here - hope this is helpful.

Really, I don't think the full-screen DVDs will give you more resolution than the anamorphic widescreen DVDs- they only differ in that the full-screen DVDs have the sides chopped off. The only benefit I can really see to owning the full-screen DVDs is if you have a 4:3 TV (one without a 'widescreen mode'), and you want to make full use of all your TV's scan lines, but otherwise there's no real inherent resolution advantage for full-screen DVDs.
The fullscreen DVDs do actually have improved resolution in the selected 4:3 area. The same picture area in the anamorphic widescreen DVD uses less pixels horizontally. So, for Blackjack's purposes, the fullscreen versions will be better, as the OUT discs are indeed letterboxed with both versions.

I really hope you're right, but I doubt it. I think Lucas will want the "ultimate" boxed set to be the complete "original vision" only. However, it's worth repeating that the 9/12 DVD sales are the only way LFL can guage demand for the OUT and the only ammunition that those within LFL who support the OUT will have.

Tell imdb.com to separate their rating system for theatrical and altered versions of movies.
Time
Have to agree with SKot, here: whatever you thought of him until now, BAK actually has made a useful post with a decent idea.

BAK, listen to what Zion said. Your second version was better, but still full of redundant personal commentary. Keep it short and simple - no need to mention the forthcoming DVDs at all, but instead refer to their poll that you mentioned in your first post - especially if you have a link to evidence of it. Try something like this:

Hello IMDB.com. Many people agree that "special editions" of movies are often inferior to their original theatrical versions, particularly George Lucas’s ’97 and ’04 editions of his original Star Wars Trilogy.

I remember there was a poll on your site shortly after the release of the '04 special editions that asked us which version of Star Wars we preferred. The original theatrical version won in a landslide! This public opinion is not able to be reflected in your current rating system.

I would therefore like your website to offer separate ratings for special edition movies and their original theatrical versions. This will help new viewers to realize there are other versions of a movie, and guide them to the most popular edition. It will also allow your voters to express their true opinions.
