Selectable crawl on new DVD? Or just the old one?

Any idea where you read this? It's certainly possible, although it would be dumb to do it that way, as they knew there was going to be an intermediate stage before mastering to Laserdisc, anyway.

I was under the impression that the DVNR was used during the THX mastering process, so it only applied to the DC and Faces set. IIRC, Laserman was talking about how the earlier editions were actually superior in this regard. I'll have to ask him to confirm.

But the earlier editions were made from totally different film transfers. A brand-new transfer was done just for the DC set (and later re-used for the Faces set). No previous editions used that transfer.
Both right. No DVNR on the older transfer (although it's a little softer, noisier and dirtier) so it's impossible to tell just from the existing LDs whether or not there is a DVNR-free D1.

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...

I have the definitive collection laserdisc set, which looks like shit but it's the best you can get on a ntsc laserdisc player. The oot trilogy dvd is also going to look like shit because It's using the same source. The same digital laserdisc master they passed over using as a medium for restoration to put the films back in theaters, that is why they restored the negatives for the special edition. No SD video master would ever have been considered as a source for theatrical restoration, no matter how good it was (except maybe by boris). The question is what makes a good home video version now. The DC master (note to eros: "DC" stands for "Definitive Collection", sometimes also shortened to "DefCol") is arguably the best existing video source. If you look at bactaOT's screencaps (note to eros: "screencaps" is an abbreviation of "screen captures," which refers to the result of the process of capturing a frame of video or extracting a frame from already captured video) above you'll see that the DC version looks better than the '04 DVD (note to eros: "'04" is an abbreviation referring to the year "2004"; "DVD" initially stood for "Digital Video Disc", later upgraded to "Digital Versatile Disc"). Why? Because the DC looks like Star Wars, whereas the '04 looks like the PT (note to eros: "PT" stands for "Prequel Trilogy," a term used to collectively refer to "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace", "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith").

We should make a thread that contains only long posts about the exact same things, just from different people.
Yes, that's a great idea...wait a minute....

MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)

Mag - I think your Ep I & II edits are widely considered classics and it would be well worth improving the quality on them. I think andy_k_250 is right about the crawls needing to be redone. There are some pretty flawless crawls on some of the other projects here and I'm sure you could get their makers to help you out. You might also consider burnt-in subtitles, since they are such an important part of your cuts and the player-generated ones look pretty cheap. The Phantom Editor revamped his first version (adding commentary in the process) and if you've seen that I think you'll agree it was well worth it.

I agree with ESBHG - it looks like both The Bizzle's caps have official top, EditDroid bottom. They are very close. The official caps look marginally sharper/more detailed, but the EditDroid ones look in some ways more pleasing. I used to wonder if the initial secrecy around the EditDroid set was because they were made by people at LFL, from the same tapes that have been used for the official release. I always liked the EditDroid colors - they look closer to the theatrical colors, IMHO, than any other NTSC set.

I'd love to see frame-for-frame comparison's to Moth3r's set and to get the answer to Arnie.d's question about DVNR.

It's so hard to tell anything conclusive from screencaps. Actually, if anything those look a bit oversaturated and the blockade runner one looks extremely sharp - a lot like the '04 disc...

But I'm giving Harlock415 the benefit of the doubt - it would be in extremely poor taste to post fake screencaps.

The general consensus in the crawl thread was that it probably is original. What makes you sure it's not? Maybe some screencaps would help.
