But the earlier editions were made from totally different film transfers. A brand-new transfer was done just for the DC set (and later re-used for the Faces set). No previous editions used that transfer.
Both right. No DVNR on the older transfer (although it's a little softer, noisier and dirtier) so it's impossible to tell just from the existing LDs whether or not there is a DVNR-free D1. I was under the impression that the DVNR was used during the THX mastering process, so it only applied to the DC and Faces set. IIRC, Laserman was talking about how the earlier editions were actually superior in this regard. I'll have to ask him to confirm.

Super8: no. 16mm: if you have a pristine print, yes - it should still have better resolution than HD (unless you're boris

The same digital laserdisc master they passed over using as a medium for restoration to put the films back in theaters, that is why they restored the negatives for the special edition. No SD video master would ever have been considered as a source for theatrical restoration, no matter how good it was (except maybe by boris
). The question is what makes a good home video version now. The DC master (note to eros: "DC" stands for "Definitive Collection", sometimes also shortened to "DefCol") is arguably the best existing video source. If you look at bactaOT's screencaps (note to eros: "screencaps" is an abbreviation of "screen captures," which refers to the result of the process of capturing a frame of video or extracting a frame from already captured video) above you'll see that the DC version looks better than the '04 DVD (note to eros: "'04" is an abbreviation referring to the year "2004"; "DVD" initially stood for "Digital Video Disc", later upgraded to "Digital Versatile Disc"). Why? Because the DC looks like Star Wars, whereas the '04 looks like the PT (note to eros: "PT" stands for "Prequel Trilogy," a term used to collectively refer to "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace", "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith").

I'd love to see frame-for-frame comparison's to Moth3r's set and to get the answer to Arnie.d's question about DVNR.

But I'm giving Harlock415 the benefit of the doubt - it would be in extremely poor taste to post fake screencaps.

The general consensus in the crawl thread was that it probably is original. What makes you sure it's not? Maybe some screencaps would help. It is not selectable. And has been pointed out before, its a reproduction of the crawl.
