POLL: WORST ACTOR OR ACTRESS IN THE PT?
Time
They were all pretty bad. Some actors (Hamill, Fisher, Ford) can handle less direction than others. Lloyd & Christensen were awful. McGregor seemed better by comparison but really wasn't good. Neeson was okay. Ian McDiarmid was the best in TPM & AOTC, but had some major cringe moments in ROTS. Overall, Christopher Lee was my favorite. He would've made a good emperor (in ESB & ROTJ).

A Question to the Older Members
Time
The telecine certainly brought out the garbage mattes tremendously compared to projected theatrical prints, where you can hardly see them. This is why arguing for garbage mattes to be untouched doesn't really make sense. You'd get a better representation of the original theatrical experience on home video if those shots were digitally recomposited (as some were for the SE). Keeping them is more like preserving the early video versions than the movie itself.

The definitive list: changes you can and can't stand...
Time
I could live with any amount of digital recompositing to eliminate matte lines/match contrast ratios, as long as only the original elements were used.

The only changes I could go with would be the "endless" corridor on DS1 and the tractor beam lettering. In this vein, Darth Editous's DS1 schematic should be incorporated. McDiarmid in ESB could've been good in principle.

Thanks, belbucus. I essentially wanted to know if the '85 (and earlier) mixes were taken from the 35mm print masters and therefore contained the limited dynamics mentioned by Dave Schnuelle in your opening post. I'd like as much theatrical authenticity as possible, but I'd be prepared to accept the hybrid nature of the '85 mix in exchange for the increased dynamics of the 4-track master or 70mm print master. However, from what you say, it seems as if they both ('85 and original stereo) share that theatrically authentic (if undesirable) trait. What I'd really like is the 70mm mix as 4.1, but since that won't happen in the forseeable future, your patched Dolby stereo sounds like it's the best available. Looking forward to hearing your transfer of blitter's 70mm>stereo tapes.
