The amazing thing about that comparison is the difference in sharpness. The X0 version sems considerably more detailed - just as the PAL THX LD does in Red5's post. Both of which would make more sense if indeed the PAL was upscaled. We really need some certifiably comparable captures of both PAL and NTSC GOUT discs to judge this properly.

1) You can see a 35mm frame in this thread;

2) Shooting a projected print on Hi-8 would look approximately 1.7 million times worse than the official letterbox discs;

I think Karyudo is just trying to be realistic. We'd all love to see a really good new anamorphic transfer. But the chances of that being acheived from a second-hand 16mm print are pretty slim, even if you had the best film scanner available. IMHO, it just isn't worth considering for an SD/DVD final product, as you would be unlikely to get better results than you would just by upscaling the new DVD.

Now if you want to make a new HD transfer, that's a different matter.

The Wal-Mart exclusives are also available online. I went to all four stores today to try and scope out the goodies. None of them had anything to show - not even flyers. The Target ones look pretty missable - they are in the DVD case, which means postcards as Number20 said. The Best Buy tin looks the best of the four. Annoyingly, the guy in the Wal-Mart DVD department told me they had accidentally put them on sale on Tuesday 5th and sold a lot before they realised their mistake.

I think Darth Mallwalker is right about the rebate thing. It's badly worded, but I think your "one rebate submission per envelope" can cover all three rebates - just check the three relevant boxes at the top and you should be fine.

Can't see anything about the Target or Circuit City exclusives on their websites - if anyone finds these, please post a link. I just cancelled my order at FYE, 'cause you can pick them up in Circuit City for $15 each on the day, which is better than waiting for the mail and then messing around with the mail-in rebates. But I think I'm switching to the tin!

Thanks for your answers, Karyudo & Laserman. I think my question was unclear, though, sorry. I can see that fanamorphic(TM) is bound to be better than TV scaling for a letterboxed Laserdisc capture. What I was concerned about was increased (compounded?) mpeg compression artifacts when coming from a (previously compressed) DVD source.

IIRC, additional sound effects were added to the mono mix when the dubbed versions were made, so they may not provide the best reference material.

Well, the crawl shown in EOD is the '77 crawl (pre-ANH), which obviously isn't on the '97 SE.
