The 1977 Crawl.
Time
Different text width and angle from ESB & ROTJ may be signs of authenticity, rather than recreation. Remember the ANH crawl was re-shot when the ESB one was done, which is why those two match. The pre-ANH crawl was always a little different stylistically from the "Episode" ones. Not saying it's 100% authentic (it does look overly stable), just sayin'...

As for the hybrid idea - I don't think so. The whole point of this release was not to put time & money into it. The overall saturation is boosted a little (nowhere near SE cartoon levels, though).

Are the PAL GOUT DVDs upscaled from the NTSC masters?
Time
I'll give Moth3r #24 & #36. As far as a dream v2.0 is concerned, I don't think the '04 discs are recoverable. The color "correction" is shot-by-shot and goes deep. To say nothing of trying to recover lost shadow detail and still give a balanced picture. You'd be better off using the '97 SE digital broadcasts, I think, for that kind of project.

First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
After seeing boris's screencaps, I was getting ready to reject the GOUT. But screencaps don't mean much compared to moving video. So I spent the afternoon comparing my copy of the NTSC GOUT with the best of the LD transfers I have, which are EditDroid (NTSC) and Moth3r (PAL). I looked at various scenes in all three films, comparing all three versions. I have to say that I agree with The Dark Lord. These are significantly better in color, contrast, sharpness, detail and naturalness of picture than any of the LD rips so far.

Of course, it is an unfair comparison with Moth3r, as I was playing back on NTSC (though I looked at the Doctor M conversion, too). I believe Moth3r may be able to better the quality of the PAL GOUT (if they are indeed upscaled from NTSC), working from the PAL THX LDs.

But for those in NTSC land, the GOUT are, IMHO, the best out there right now.

2006 OT DVD: The Crawl on Star Wars
Time
I agree with MBJ that no single frame comparison can be considered proof overall. But it does prove that the angle is the same on the GOUT as on the EOD crawl.

As far as the color is concerned, I don't think the EOD color is accurate - I think it was timed to match the SE it came with, which are more orange, like the PT. The GOUT one looks more accurate, and matches the other two movies.

2006 OT DVD: Well today's the day...
Time
Gaffer Tape - what are the "graphic novels" like in the Wal-Mart sets? Exact reprints of the Marvel super specials or what? The odd thing is that the Star Wars one shows the cover of Star Wars #1 (which didn't contain the whole of Star Wars) on the box, but the other two show the Super Specials' (which did contain the whole stories) covers. Is this an accurate reflection of what's inside?

AJP, if you think the quality is equal to DrGonzo's set, you need to change your system.

Help: looking for. 1997 Special Edition Preservation?
Time
Well, there's the Jedi/Feta SE set, but I think you'd be better off starting with the PAL edition. The ultimate hybrid would be made from that and either the PAL GOUT (if it's not resized NTSC) or Moth3r's forthcoming PAL THX upgrade (go on Moth3r!). If you really want to go for maximum quality, try to get in touch with the makers of the TB (or GKAR?) set and get hold of the uncompressed data.
