Best movies of 05
Time
Alright guys! lets get back to the topic and move this over to the general discussion thread. I don't know about this year being better than 2004. It's sorta so-so. The movies this year were not much of an improvement from last year. It'd be nice if we could get good movies like we had during the 80's and 90's though.

Well, Jas, I apologize. I wasn't trying to get a shot in as you call it but I apologize anyway. I also am pretty big on film and it is something that I am getting involved in. The reason I asked how old you are is cause your posts sound like your an angry teenager.

And I listed those movie cause I liked them and age has no bearing on whether or not you like a film. Whether the film is appropriate for someone to see is another subject entirely. And I might also add that this forum is anout peoples opinions. Thik of it as a way of getting to know someone a little more.

And believe it or not, I have my problems with narnia. I felt that there really weren't any characters to invest in and care about, other than moments of lucy.

I just wanted to say that I'm not here to fight just trying to get a bead on where your coming from and sometimes, age has alot to do with that.

I'm not even going to dignify Jaster with a response. I only have one question. How old are you Jaster?

And My List would be short (In no particular order):
[!Disclaimer!-- this is meant to be taken as my personal opinion and not as fact. Nor is it meant to be me trying to force anyone to agree with my opinion.]

1. Kung Fu Hustle

2. Batman Begins

3.Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

4. Corpse Bride

5. Wallace and Gromit

I haven't seen Crash, Hustle and Flow, Jarhead, Good night and Good Luck or Syriana. I want to see those and Narnia and King Kong. Didn't see too many Movies this year. Nothing really struck my fancy in alot of them.

Kung Fu Hustle was just something fresh in a way and was very funny (Of course there's alot of asian humor in it that I'm used to and others may not be). Batman Begins was just good from a comic movie stand point. Corpse Brid and Walace and Gromit were funny and inventive and fresh in some respects.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory was okay I guess. I loved the humor in it but that's just me.

In terms of well crafted movies, there weren't a whole lot of those this year. I've heard good things about the most of the films I haven't seen. I'll enjoy them on DVD.

the best course of action when it comes to adam is to just ignore him. YIYF, also, it is probably a good idea to not care what adam thinks of you. Who cares if he thinks that we are a bunch of losers for liking the OOT? I certainly don't care what he thinks about me as I also don't care what everyone else on these boards thinks about me. I just chose not to allow anything negative that they may think about me to affect me. It can be done, just takes practise. Adam, you do need to think about what you are posting on these forums from now on. By now, you know what buttons not to push with certain posters; so think about what you type in the interest of keeping this forum a friendly enviornment. I will read what you have to say, but I will willingly ignore any baiting and the like from you.

If adam likes the PT and doesn't like the OOT, that's his perogative. Of course, it might be a good idea to see the OOT first; which he has said he will do. I am sure that once he gets older, his views on things will change, I know mine did. I'm not as big of an SW fan now that I'm older. I still enjoy the movies, but they are not so much of a focus in my life anymore. Other things have become more of a focus in my life nowadays. This is why I have decided that posting in these types of threads are somewhat of a waste of my time. It really doesn't do any of us any good to complain and moan about how Lucas has gone nuts and ruined everything. I agree with the sentiment, but I find it counter productive to complain about it. Now I will step down from my soap box and be on my way.

Women and Action Films

yeah, i've noticed that too. you could say that aeon flux was done in the style of anime when it was done as a cartoon. And the trend in Hollywood since business' took over has basically been to find something that sells really well and copy it. I personally can't wait til people who actually love movies and understand them start running the studios and kick the business idiots out. It'll happen...eventually. If you guys look at what's coming out in 2007 and beyond, not too many sequels and spin-offs scheduled right now. Lets hope it stays that way. You can go to comingsoon.net to see for yourself.

I don't have anything against women being the hero in action films, so long as the story is really good. In Aliens, as someone metioned before, the movie did well because the story was good. The skip over to AVP, the hero was supposed to be a woman and the story was crappy. If they'd have stayed close to the comic series, the movie would have worked IMO.

so he just lost hiss edge once ESB was done? hmm.... that's sad. I can think of ways he could have gone beyond what he had done. Well, that's not really true, at least not off the top of my head. But there is always something. There is always something out there that nobody has ever done before and whatnot. If I were him, I'd have turned to more experimental stuff to just try new things and expand, but i guess he never did. It's funny, since hitchcock, films haven't been the same in a way. the inventive spirit is almost nill right now. Sad...sad...sad...

It's official, George is really losing it (claims more changes to the OT to come...)

I never really understood why one would compare the two. Lucas was never even close to being on par with Tolkien. Tolkein literally wrote his story from scratch so many times because he ran into problems or other things that go bump. He re-wrote the story until he came to another bump and them re-wrote it again. He didn't publish until he had the story completely worked out. Which is something Lucas never did. I think in part he didn't because he hated writing as he has said so often. I actually like writing and so did tolkien. It sorta allows one to enter a world of endless possibilities. Also remember that Tolkien wasn't writing for money or fame he already had that at Oxford. Lucas was writing for money essentially

i really don't have any problems with adam's opinions they are his and he has a right to them, but his behaviour on this forum is suspect. The fact that he hasn't seen the O-OT isn't the reason we should ban him. It's the fact that he was baiting us with the high-and-mighty attitude about the 2004 DVDs when he hadn't seen the originals. That is what a troll is right? someone who comes in an baits users with what they say? Adam, it's great that you want to see the oot, but it doesn't negate what you've already done on this forum. You don't really have a means to compare the 2004 dvds to the original if you haven't seen both. It's like comparing coke to pepsi. you can't form an intelligent comparison unless you've sampled both the colas. do you understand where we are coming from at least?

If the Prequels had been made first would they have succeeded?
Time
it's funny that a bunch of us are trying to get the point acrossed to a 16 year old. In my experience, most sixteen year olds think they know everything and don't want to listen anyway. I do think that the kid needs to actually watch the O-OT before forming opinions though. That and read a couple of good books. Adam, I am sure that many of the classical writers didn't actually write a back story before they wrote the books they did. I get the impression that they wanted to allow the characters and the story to take them to unexpected places as they wrote. Take Treasure Island for example, Stevenson seems to just write and allow things to flow freely in that story. Same with Count of Monte Cristo. I could be wrong though haven't looked into it to know for sure.

I have also come to suspect that the reason why GL doesn't pay any attention to the O-OT anymore is because his wife at the time had a hand in editing it. She was the one who said that the Jabba scene was redundant in the first place. His real motive for some of the changes to ANH may have been driven out of this fact. She really must have hurt him alot after ROTJ.

Adam, I never said he didn't have a backstory for ANH, I said he wrote THE backstory after the first movie was sucessful. The backstory that he actually had for ANH was slighlty different than the one he had after the movie came out. Besides, what can you really contribute to this? you haven't even seen the O-OT pre- '97. You have no real frame of reference for this discussion.

The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that he made it up as he went along. Kinda like the Walchowski brothers and the matrix mess. Adam, you need to really think about what you are saying. I've found that most of your statements hang on the idea that Lucas knew what he was doing, and that anything he does and says it gospel when it comes to how things wnet down. The man is human and he is prone to lying just as much as you are. Trust me, He's lied to the world, even to his friends about this story for years. He never had what you would call a real backstory when he made the original star wars. He didn't write any of that until after it did really well in the box office. Once he saw that, he thought "well I can say there is moer to the story and make more movies". Then he wrote the backstory based on the previous scripts that he tried to hammer out before 1977. Once the backstory was laid, then he wrote the story outlines for ESB and Jedi.
