I have to do job searching this week, but if I have time, I'm starting a TV show called "The Flickering Window" which would be broadcast on GBS-TV, as well as archived on YouTube (they'd hit YT after the first showing on GBSTV). Each episode would be about 15-20 minutes covering a single movie sort of like a video version of a term paper. The films I'm choosing are mostly those without decent documentaries on DVD or I'd like to put out more information on. "Thief" would definately be in one episode. I'm basically going with rare films, underrated, and good/great films that don't have proper documentaries on DVD (like the Paramount Marx Bros. films). Thankfully, animation won't be too often since Disney has provided great stuff on their DVD's... but I know I'll be doing A Boy Named Charlie Brown (VERY underrated film) and maybe Raggedy Ann and Andy.

I might even make "Thief" the first episode so it can go with the final Recobbled Cut.

Neat you'll be going after "A Boy Named Charlie Brown". Still haven't got the DVD that's out, but I know it's worth the $10 for those interested in seeing it.

Do we have someone who has a PAL DVCam camera or deck? (I'm told that's the slightly pro version of MiniDV ... probably the same as NTSC's DVCPro.)

All of Ben's material is going to be transferred to DVcam ... not MiniDV. We need these tapes to then be transferred to PAL DVD, via a DVD recorder or whatever.

Can anyone handle this? Because ** can't, so crap.

I wish I could help. I was about to send out some more DVD's worth of my materialt o you, but I wasn't sure if it'll get delivered to you early or not before you leave. Wanted to put off that for a while in case you can locate a new place of address I might get in touch with you at. Also of note is the tape I STILL haven't gotten back from you as well.

Very, very nice! An honor to work with him.
It's becoming a small world after all!

>> I can, over the next couple of weeks, start dubbing the stuff to DVCam, but wanna be sure he can handle it

I'll PM you about this ... I've asked him.

>> No pre-1983 RW Roger scenes, but I would dearly, dearly love to see more and have all of that stuff (I'm pretty obsessive about Roger Rabbit.

Been trying to dig this stuff up! We'll see. My various contacts for it have fallen through though. But maybe ...

>. Actually, another project I'm involved in just landed Bob Hoskins for the lead, so I'm heading down to set to get all my Roger stuff signed)

Great! Bob Hoskins ... one of the greats.

>> I thought we were up to 12/13??

Technically it's more like 15. =) That's counting 4 discs that aren't really part of the main collection tho'. We've got 11 "must have" discs.

>> I still have Don's WDFA contacts. Not sure how I would approach him, or if he's the right guy to talk to, but thats a possible possibility. I also potentially have links to Andreas Deja and Eric Goldberg, if we wanted to be more stealth like and just possibly get an idea if this is floating around anywhere right now at the Mouse House.

Very nice! Good story there, always curious about projects which never quite made it.

It would be nice to get some DVDs over to Eric Goldberg and Andreas Deja, I think they'd be interested rather than angered, and might give some info.
That would be neat to see what they might have to say about it too.

Now, Patrick ...

>> Ok, I'm very low on the green being that it's the end of the semester. I just can't practically burn enough DVD-R's for my class by Wednesday.

Aaargh. Not even a couple?

I'd like to help if anyone didn't mind me burning copies on my PC. I would gladly do it if someone offered me some cash for blanks and postage to whomever.

>> By the way, what's the story behind the Majestic Films booklet? It has all the original voice cast listed... didn't the CBC already redub everyone by the time they picked it up?

That's the back of the "Once ..." booklet. Majestic Films was involved even at that early stage ... 1988ish.

Really, it wouldn't be far off to include the Majest Films and even Warner Bros logos at the beginning of the Recobbled Cut. They were involved.

Always had the nerve of wanting the opening logo/caption to be "Sobieniak International Ltd. Presents".
(something of a thing I kinda had about one day wanting to release fine cinematic works under such a cheesy title)

Yeah, the first two shots of Tack don't really have to be in some order since he goes back to sleep both times. I actually like the "thumb hit" take as the first shot of him (apparently Fred Calvert did, too).

The thumb hit was a perfect way to set up his first few seconds on the screen, and I also that big of him threading the needle in his sleep (is that what he does?) if that can be set up to come in second when the Thief shows up.

I know what those editor's marks mean ... =) I've had to cut film myself at times.

I've chosen to ignore them - I rather prefer having hard cuts, when the material available is limited. I probably should follow them, but I do my own thing.

EDIT: Bowing to peer pressure ... =) I've added a fade into "Open for the Royal Polo Ponies."
That's the only point where I felt a fade was sufficient. The rest is OK as you have it.

>> Also, I know it's a compromise due to what's available, but would it be possible to fill in the dissolves during the flyover with the pencils-only footage?

Nope.

<< The dissolves to the One-Eyes really harm the impact of the march and battle later.

Yep.

I'm working on the final cut. The processing that's being done to the workprint material is causing it to render at excruciatingly slow speed this time round. This is gonna take a while.

Take your time! We're rooting for you!

Oh, I did some reading on how to interpret editor's marks...

The "V" editor marks are fade-to/from-black (V = fade to black, inverted V = fade from black), while the diagonal lines are for dissolves.
That's true. I read all about this in "The Filmmaker's Handbook" years ago.

So, the wide shot of the castle gate after Tack is captured should have a fade from black instead of a hard cut. The shot of the gate after the fade-to-black on Zig-Zag's face (after "go with princess yum-yum") should also be a fade from black. There should be dissolves between the slow-motion wounded soldier, the blood spurts, and then King Nod. The shot of Tack forming Yum-Yum's face in the string should have a fade from black instead of a hard cut.

Just a few examples.

Also, I know it's a compromise due to what's available, but would it be possible to fill in the dissolves during the flyover with the pencils-only footage? The dissolves to the One-Eyes really harm the impact of the march and battle later. It's just as important as cutting to storyboards to hide Tack's voice in some parts.

That would be neat to see the use of fades and dissolves in parts that were indicated in the workprint.

I'll be sending you a ton of music, but here's a piece you might find suitable to use as a theme for the thief:

http://ctufilms.googlepages.com/04AllegroPesante.mp3 (from Vaughan Williams' 9th symphony)

You might want to do a remix to just get the really good parts.

Listening to it right now. I can see where this might come in handy!

1972 - Dick Williams shows us the making of the Nasrudin film. We watch Dick, Ken Harris and Roy Naisbitt work ...

The sound on this was terrible - I've done my best to make it easier to understand ... even if it now sounds kind of electronic.

That's OK with me! While noticing Granada produced the Clapperboard films, the other one, "A Creative Man" looks to have been shown on the old "NET" (National Educational Television). This was the predessesor to what we know today as PBS.

Actually, that Tack & Yumyum shot isn't an error, that's something I created. It isn't very good. See, I didn't have that shot in widescreen, except that they reused the same animation in "Beem Bom." But it turned out the "Beem Bom" version was heavily cropped. So I used the sides of the "Beem Bom" version, but they only gave me parts of Tack/Yum Yum. Hmmm ...

Heh, I was looking more at the off-model nature of the characters in that shot personally (especially Tack's mouth gaping open, it just looks so noticable).

Hey everyone! So I've been uploading most of the huge, 1GB collection of scans of artwork from the collection of Andreas Wessel-Therhorn. This is because I'm leaving for the weekend and I wanted to give you all something big to chew on. =)

http://orangecow.org/thief/thieffromtherhorn

There you are. Mostly pencil drawings. They've mostly been scanned in two or more parts because they wouldn't fit on the scanner, so anyone wanting to patch them together in Photoshop, that kind of thing. To do anything with them you'll have to do that.

All are quite large.

This isn't the whole collection, but it is most of it. Maybe I'll upload the Ken Harris "Thief in tree/awning" and Art Babbit "Get those balls" sequences some other time ...

These would be a good basis to trace as fanart, or to play with in Photoshop.
I outta try to do that!

There have been no takers for OCRing that collection of articles. Anyone?
I'm still wondering whether or not to ask. I haven't done anything like this before, and not sure where to begin in it.

EDIT:

Fellow in Australia believes he can get a 16mm copy of The Little Island converted, for the tune of $50 Australian for miniDV, $60 for a DVD. He can also get The Dermis Probe, probably for free.

That's cool!

Sounds like another excuse to spend money! I'm tapped out to negative levels right now though. Maybe I can ask a few of the regulars here to throw $5 apiece into the tygerbug at yahoo paypal?

Perhaps I should do so as well, I'll get paid next week so I'll see if I have an extra $5 to spare!

By the way, I've mailed out a package to you, which probably will be sent to your place on Tuesday or so. I managed to send out a few discs to you and a drawing I did for fun (you can do whatever you want with it, though it would be a little late given that it's themed to Easter).

You know, if it'll take the load off a little, I can still do the re-editing on Animating Art and I Drew Roger Rabbit. The funny thing is that I was set to go a few days ago, but with the potential better quality source material, I figured it was worth waiting for.

I have a book by Gianalberto Bendazzi called "Cartoons" and there's a short bit on Richard Williams. Oddly enough, it still mentions "Thief" is an adaptation of the Nasruddin stories, despite being a relatively new book.
Hey, I just read that book last year! I highly recommend it!

I'm visiting my old home for the weekend, so I showed my mother the recobbled cut and she loved it! I'm just in awe of how everyone I've shown this to just falls in love with the film.

It's kinda funny how that works at all. Too bad it never did a decade ago.

complete mp3 in terrific quality. I did a little try synching it... it actually fits really well!

Listening to this, I'm being reminded this same piece was used for a short film produced by the National Film Board of Canada in the early 80's I have in my collection entitled "Zea".

I was about to go to bed when I decided to check back on this thread and discover that too! Pratically says it all in one word (sometimes I wonder if "Once..." would've made a perfect title to the one we all know very well).

And, it isn't really relevant, but I borrowed my daddy's dvd copy of Murder on the Orient Express and had a look at the opening sequence. There isn't any 'cartoon' animation; it's a montage of newspaper clippings, essentially, but I've always liked it, and now I know why, I guess. There is an odd little drawing in it, though - - wonder who did that?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/pirateprincesseldorado/newspaper.jpg

Given that, I would like to add I just watched the opening of my copy of "Don't Drink The Water". There wasn't really much animation in it other than a lot fo stock shots, clips of the actors from photos of their trip, and the credits that were written in a multi-lingual fashion in a font resembling a typewriter/stamp fashion seein in passports.
