Lensman - dvd preservation proposal (* unfinished project - lots of info *)

There's a few points that might make it go out of sync, but it's mostly perfect (as I was originally going to sync it with the Japanese LD).

Interesting it was apparently fixed. Even the version I taped off the SciFi channel in the early 90's had the same crappy mono track.
Heh, being reminded SciFi Channel was mono on my cable service in the 90's as they were too cheap to have it in stereo at all (hadn't checked to see if it's in stereo right now).

Speaking of syncs, here's a Spanish language track I extracted from a VHSrip of the film I found elsewhere online (I assume it's Castilian dialect, but the visuals to it were the Streamline release).

I think I like the credits on the Japanese disc better.

They are a lot better personally. I decided to clip the opening and ending from my Japanese LD to further show that!
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8D334H37

It's interesting at noticing how the opening prologue, as well as captions for the different places are written in English in the film itself, which I guess was mainly due to this having been based on the work of an American SciFi novelist and they wanted to preserve that sort of origin of the language (much like the recent anime "Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo" uses French in a few places).

BTW, are you familiar with this fan site ?

Yes, I've been there before. Probably were I had gotten the idea to do a fansub due to a movie script having being put up on there. The only problem though is getting it re-written due to it's exhausted use of adding in lines for character's moans, groans, yowls and other meaningless bursts.

Here's another nice gem to gander at, the first 10 minutes of the "Harmony Gold" version from the late 80's! Somehow both the movie and TV series was once in their hands, though the best they could do was two separate feature-length movies that might have been aired on TV or released on home video around the world. One was "Lensman: Secret of the Lens" (a dub of the movie with slight modifications in music, editing and dialog which I've heard was meant to make it closing to the books than what it was originally), and "Lensman: Power of the Lens" (a compilation of several episodes in the TV series "Galactic Patrol Lensman"). The copy I found of this on might've aired or was released on home video in Israel as it contains Hebrew subtitles on it.

I've made an LDrip though I had cut it to the exact ratio of the letterboxing as to remove the black otherwise, but here you go!

Here's shots from the Japanese LD...

I'm still puzzled why the English dub on the Lumivision disc is so low-fi and mono. The movie posters for Lensman's limited U.S. release clearly have a Dolby Stereo credit on them.

I know how you feel. I can only assume there was a mess-up in the telecining that gave us the copy used on those VHS editions that sounded terribly monophonic, hissy, and for some reason, too much blue intensity in the picture. My LD oddly seems to have a stereo soundtrack on it for the English track though, I can't explain it, but perhaps they went back and fixed it at some point, but I'm telling the truth!

Wait, I can prove it!

(not too perfect, it it's a last-minute deal)

I also have a few other things like the Japanese souvenir booklet from the film's release and the original Japanese theatrical poster.

Back to the Future as one film (Released)

Being a big Back to the Future fan, I did a chronological cut myself. If anyone's interested, here's the breakdown: (Which is probably how most would do it, but I have seen variations)

- In part 1, after Marty gets the car keys from Biff, cut to Part 2 with Marty opening the garage door, then after Doc returns to take him and Jennifer to 2015 cut right after Biff says "What the hell is going on here?" before the music kicks in.

- For part 2 to 3, I used the ending of part 2, and right after Doc faints, cut to a the brief pan down to Doc's mansion in the rain where there are no credits or music, then cut to the staticy TV just as Howdy Doody comes on. I did actually toy with the idea of attempting to reinsert certain deleted scenes, but figured it would be too difficult to pull off. I also was thinking about inserting the scene of Marty from part 2 running up to Doc to the end of part 1, but that would go against the Bobs' logic of "nothing happens until you see it happen"

This is EPIC! Really, I wouldn't mind getting a version of this that pretty much ties everything into one complete film as if you didn't realize how long you've been sitting there watching this thing.

It will happen the way I want it, I promise. I'm leaning towards both DL and SL, but we'll see.

I should've said something about this a while ago, but I do have a couple LD copies of Lensman I could contribute to this project if need be. I have both the Lumivision US release and the original Japanese Pony Video edition.

Please bare with the quality of these pics as I took them with my Playstation Portable's camera add-on...

I've also been working on a subtitle script for it as well that's been taking me quite some time to do (namely adapting an old script to be more adaptable for a regular subtitle one through a few subbing programs).

I'm probably between a third and half way through. It's literally frame by frame that I'm doing, so it's very time-consuming. It's moving along quicker now that I've rejoined it. When I'm done with the editing I'm going back through and doing the special effects. I also want to do a fancy menu for it. It will fill a full dual layer disc. I'll do a divx/xvid movie only for those who just want the movie. I've been obsessed by this movie for years, so I want to do it up right.

I still haven't gotten around to watching the LD of the film I had to pay good money on!

You know I still haven't figured it out personally how to get these. Sorry to sound like such a luddite, but it sounds like I'm missing out on something I need to know in order to do so (unless someone doesn't PM me about it).

Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)

Well, I recently broke down and bought one of the boots online in order to get this film on DVD. I'm tired of waiting on Disney to make up its mind regarding a release.

The thing is, I'm not sure what "version" I ended up with. The disc contains the movie, the 1972 TV trailer, the 1946 Radio show, and the Coal Black cartoon, and that's it. Here is a screen capture of the menu:

Menu

I was rather disappointed in the picture quality of the movie, as the fan preservations I have seen of the original Star Wars trilogy were much better in comparison. The movie looks as if it was dubbed from a video tape, and the audio is out of sync (lags behind the video). There are also no chapter stops on my copy! Here are a couple more screen captures:

Image 2

I would be most curious to see and/or get a copy of one the transfers mentioned in this thread, and though I am somewhat tech-savvy, I don't claim to know anything about torrent downloads and such. Any help and/or advice would be much appreciated.

Heh, my copy I got off BitTorrent once that looked a lot better than this. I would say it looked like a decent master (not so much VHS), but it was obviously an NTSC conversion from a PAL source otherwise.

I also have one that was a direct copy from a airing on BBC2, though it looked like a PAL conversion from NTSC (similar blur effect I couild expect).

Then I have my original Japanese laserdisc of SOTS as well, despite being a tad darker in the picture and the subs over the song moments.

Yes, Bandai Visual through their US subsidiary will be releasing the movie soon. Just expect to pay $80 for it!

It was probably for the best to do it this way, though I know I would've probably just lump in whatever from either release into one grouping for my DVD effort than to split them apart, but I can see how much a headache it would've been trying to be a completist in that fashion (better off tracking down that 5 hour rough cut of the film if ever to get into serious geekdom).

If you can read French - If not, basically with regard to MCoG (they talk about MCoG2 funding too) they are saying the original creators now have the full rights back for the show and are working on both English and French AV remastered versions for release.
Even though it shows up on play as coming soon, they have also listed the episodes - which would have come with the release schedule, this means that somewhere something is going on. It will show on other retailers soon I'd expect.

A few options about who's releasing, Sony Music and AK video did the french releases, the BBC have their sticky beak in MCoG2 funding along with Canal +, could be the BBC I do know that at one point in the past about 3 or so years ago Contender Entertainment were looking into it but it was gonna cost too much down the food chain to be viable.

Of course then it leaves us Americans to question who might bring this one over afterwards. Wouldn't be surprising if an anime company like Media Blasters licensed could easily license this. I just hate waiting, *edited* I just don't want to keep bitching about the $300 box sets I'll never get of the Japanese release I said I was going to fansub myself!

This happened to me on both of my projects too.
I'd almost finished my PAL boxset of Star Trek: The Animated series (transferred from LD) when rumours of an official release started.
Fortunately as I was almost done I carried on and finished it.
Glad I did as it took about a year and a half before it was finally officially released (although it does look better than mine).

Then the same thing happened again with my other project 'This Island Earth' (thinking back, thismay have happened first).
The difference with this one is that when Universal finally re-released it, it was still only in NTSC format and hardly any better picture quality than the first (long deleted) release ages ago. So my version is still better in some ways and I'm still working on it.

Anyway, I managed to obtain the first two discs of MCoG. It will be interesting to see how they compare with the official versions.
Cheers!

Who's going to release it anyway? Would this be in R1 (North America) or R2 (namely the UK)?

So far, I have had one offer to "spread the disease" so to speak, so they'll have to get the word out when they can help you all out. To give you some insight, I prefer to get discs from newsgroups.

As for cover art, it's included in the DVD_ROM content, along with some other suprises. Volume 2 will contain all the special features from the Criterion release and the MGM Special Edition (I like to keep everything in one place). Volume 3 is where things will get interesting... I have some sweet things up my sleeve.

Thanks for the Spinal Tap reuniting article! It's about time they reunited again. For legal reasons, they have to appear every so often. (Listen to the actor commentary on this disc to find out why.)

Might as well to keep
StudioCanal happy!

Heh, I just happen to noticed "Anchor Bay Entertainment" is no more, after getting bought by Liberty Media, they changed the name of that famous label to "Starz Home Entertainment". Lame!

Wikipedia says they didn't show the documentaries in the UK or US, but they were shown in Australia and "other countries".
I know the French version did when it was aired on Société Radio-Canada some years ago from a tape of an episode or two a friend sent me. I often think on government-subsidized public channels they'd probably would've played it uncut (can't explain why the BBC wouldn't want to have those mini-documentaries at all given the nature of that channel).

Did you want some recommendations on news servers and software?

Yeah I did! I've used Xnews through my ISP's news server, but it would be nice to find out what other servers I could use that are affordable or "free" if possible.
