If it weren’t for 2000s nostalgia being in right now, ATLA would be seen as just kind of above average.

I guess I agree with you, although I’ve only seen the first 3 episodes, so I don’t know if I’ve seen enough of the show to make that judgement. People always say it “gets good” after the first season, but I feel like if a show doesn’t hook me by the third episode than it will probably never hook me. That’s a major weakness of Filoni’s writing in my opinion: his shows always “get good” in season 2 or 3, but before the audience gets to the good parts they have to suffer through an entire season of stupid BS.

But why? Does it really need to be an ability unique to him?

Yeah, I don’t really see how the OT implies that only Palpatine can use force lightning. It feels like Tantive just made some personal assumptions about how things work after seeing the OT for the first time, and then got mad at the prequels for “contradicting the OT” when they really just contradicted his own personal headcanon.

Anyway, it should probably have a different voice actor than Eddie since the scene is so close to the ones he’s already working on. If anyone else wishes to volutneer as tribute, I would be inestimably grateful.

I volunteer! I can do a pretty decent British accent, and I have a pretty high-quality microphone. It would be an honor to have a voice cameo in such an amazing edit.

The Kenobi <s>Movie</s> Show (Spoilers)
Time

Yeah, I’m not super pumped about this leak either. SPOILERS BELOW

Apparently, the new inquisitor Reva is actually supposed to find Luke while Obi-Wan is busy fighting Vader. When Obi-Wan returns to Tatooine after the battle, he finds Reva standing over Luke, saber drawn. He then gives a big speech about how Reva has been manipulated by the dark side her entire life, and there’s still time for her to change. Because of that, she decides not to kill Luke and leaves. When she returns to Vader, she tells him that she killed Obi-Wan, but Vader sees through her BS and kills her.

Personally, I don’t like it at all. It feels like it completely ruins Luke’s character in ANH if he was already exposed to lightsabers and Jedi 10 years before his hero’s journey began. Luke wouldn’t be mesmerized by his father’s lightsaber, he would just say “Isn’t that the kind of weapon that evil Imperial lady tried to kill me with?” And I don’t know if I’m a big fan of them including yet another “redemption equals death” moment, especially given how similar this one feels to the ending of Jedi Fallen Order.

Star Wars Headcanons

The more “kiddie” and simplistic episodes of Clone Wars (like Malevolence and the Jar-Jar episodes) are in-universe Republic propaganda films, which is why the Republic’s corruption is glossed over and the Separatists are shown as incompetent morons. The more mature and complex episodes (like Umbara and Ahsoka leaving the Jedi) are the actual truth of what happened.

Taking a que from Robot Chicken, Boba was insanely drunk on Malastarian gargle-blasters during the sail barge battle, which is why he was stumbling around in an almost intoxicated way while trying to fight Luke. His pain and suffering as the Tuskens dragged his acid-scarred body through the Dune Sea was accompanied by the worst hangover of his life.

Jar Jar is a dark side user, although he isn’t a Sith. He was banished from his tribe for discovering ancient Sith texts hidden in Naboo’s Sacred Place, and he used the knowledge contained in those texts to obtain vast dark side power. His signature technique was a subtle form of mind control, manifesting through apparent coincidence. When the Queen’s ship made it to Coruscant, Palpatine sensed Jar Jar’s power, and formed an alliance with him. Jar Jar would mind control the Senate into giving Palpatine absolute power, and in return Palpatine would have Jar Jar be one of his top advisors. However, this deal was a ruse, and Palpatine killed Jar Jar soon after the rise of the Empire.

I feel bad for people getting into Star Wars for the first time. A lot of them will be confused about which movie to start with, and even if they do start with the OT, they’ll be stuck watching the Special Editions.

It saddens me. There was this big wave of YouTube videos of people reacting to Star Wars for the first time. They were enjoyable to watch, but every one I found (except 1 lucky gal) watched the Special Editions. I get this sort of second-hand embarrassment seeing someone watch the Jabba scene, Jedi Rocks, or Vader screaming “NO!”. I’ve seen a few people comment on how the effects are a little dated, not realizing that most of the dated effects were added 20 years after the film came out.

To be fair, it’s not like the original 70s effects still look good either. No matter what version you’re watching, Star Wars must be seen as a product of its time. Not that that’s a bad thing, I hate when people dismiss older stuff because it doesn’t hold up to modern standards.

I do agree with you otherwise though. It’s a shame that Lucas’s revision of history has been so successful. The majority of Star Wars fans my age don’t even know about the original versions, and those who do just see the campaign to officially release them as whiny fanboy complaining. I’m glad that I was able to find this community and the fantastic preservation efforts going on here, but the chances for an official release of the theatrical cuts are looking more and more slim every year.

I also wish there was a John Williams collaboration with him writing some of the music with the other composers, so it has that Star Wars feel more.

Funnily enough, that’s exactly what’s happening with this show. They’re taking the Solo approach, where Williams writes the main theme and the composer writes a score that incorporates that main theme.

Overall, I agree with you. These recent shows have been a bit rough around the edges (especially Boba Fett), but it doesn’t feel like a soulless MCU-style product by any means. Favreau, Filoni, and the other creatives clearly have a massive appreciation for the franchise, and it shows. Even if these shows aren’t spectacular, as long as they continue to capture the OT’s childlike sense of adventure I’ll still enjoy them.

I just had a great idea for altering one of Palpatine’s lines, but I think my pitch is too late.

ORIGINAL:
“Your master, Luke Skywalker was saved by his father, the only family you have here… is me.”

ALTERATION:
“Your master, Luke Skywalker was saved by his father, the only family you have… is here.”

After that cues Rey looking at the Battle of Exegol, as Palatine is referring to the Resistance, as it’s a reveal that they are here as well to her.

I think someone already proposed that. It’s still a pretty great idea though (and actually flows a lot better than the original conversation).

However, I would prefer if Palpatine said “The only family you have here… will die.” It should be fairly easy to extract the “will die” part from “Now, young Skywalker, you will die”, and then alter it to sound like TROS Palpatine.

I saw it again myself. Worse on a second viewing, unlike Nolan’s films its completely uncinematic. Very little happens. Batman has no agency whatsoever. Stuff just happens to him like he is a victim. Maybe it could be improved on in a sequel since this was like a prequel before he became The Batman we know, but i’m not sure i would be on board. As in someone who would purchase a ticket.

I’d actually say the opposite: I think the recent Batman is way more cinematic than Nolan’s trilogy. The new movie has an almost noir-ish aesthetic that feels like one of the 80’s graphic novels it’s inspired by, whereas Nolan’s movies feel sort of flat in comparison. And I disagree that Batman had no agency: this was the first Batman movie to actually show the “world’s greatest detective” doing detective work, rather than just punching people. Just because there’s not much action doesn’t mean nothing’s happening.

Overall, I really liked the movie: in my opinion, it’s probably the closest any Batman movie has gotten to capturing the true essence of the character. It was a bit too long though: they could have trimmed about 40 minutes of runtime and it would be a lot better.

I’m beginning to think I don’t want them to merge animation and live action any more either, but only because it’s taking away from the animated shows. When it comes to the TV shows I think animation is the far superior medium.

Yeah, I’m starting to agree with you. It was cool when they were just transferring over a few animated characters into the live-action stuff, but with the upcoming Ahsoka show basically being a live-action Rebels sequel it feels like they just don’t want to do animated stuff anymore. It’s a shame, since so many things can be done in animation that just feel cheesy or lame in live-action. I don’t think Mortis or Yoda’s vision quest would be anywhere near as good if Clone Wars was a live-action show.

I’d like to know if there are fan edit versions of the Special Editions of the Original Trilogy that are basically the Special Editions of 1997, but with the addition of Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine, Luke’s green lightsaber, ghost Hayden and the 2011 victory celebration, and maybe without the scene of the kiss between Luke and Leia.

Luke’s green lightsaber is in every version, but adding the prequel continuity bits into the 1997 SE sounds pretty interesting. I’d imagine it would be easy to edit yourself by just combining sources, though.

I saw Everything Everywhere All At Once in theaters over the weekend, and it was absolutely fantastic. It’s basically Parasite meets The Matrix meets a tab of LSD, with a surprisingly heartwarming message framed by exhilarating action and hilarious comedy. Definitely the best movie of the 2020s so far, and possibly one of the best movies of the 21st century.

Recently saw CODA… or, at least, the first half of it. Yeah, I turned it off halfway through, because it was just sort of disappointing. The scenes with the deaf parents were absolutely amazing (I didn’t think sign language dialogue could be so funny), but the High School Musical subplot with the generic teen girl was painful to sit through. You could see every single plot point coming from a mile away. I’m all for deaf representation, but this is the second Best Picture winner in a row that really didn’t deserve to win.

I would also like to see a version with Hayden’s ghost, both because I think it makes more sense than Anakin’s ghost looking older than Obi-Wan for some reason, and also because your own TROS edit had Hayden show up when the Jedi ghosts defeat Palpatine.

Since you already have a version with Yub Nub and a version with Victory Celebration, maybe you could have Shaw’s ghost in the Yub Nub version and Hayden’s ghost in the Victory Celebration version? It seems like most of the people who prefer Shaw also prefer Yub Nub, while those who prefer Hayden also prefer Victory Celebration, so that could be a good compromise.

Exactly but unfortunately Star Wars is becoming the very “soulless boardroom committee” filmmaking we fear. It started with the soft reboot and has only got progressively worse from a critical standpoint. George had a vision. It’s fine if you don’t like it but he had a story he wanted to tell. It just might not be the story you would’ve told. Marvel films are the exact opposite. The directors are hired with almost all of the work already done for them. It’s low risk, high reward.

I’d personally disagree with that, too. Even though Lucas is gone, the new creators still have very clear visions and distinctive styles, much more unique than anything seen in the MCU.

In contrast to how the MCU is criticized for being generic and same-y, most criticisms of Disney Star Wars tend to be criticisms of directors’ individual styles: Abrams was criticized for his flashy style-over-substance approach and love of mysteries, Johnson was criticized for his bait-and-switch plot structure and cartoonish comedy, and Rodriguez was criticized for his janky looking B-movie aesthetic. Meanwhile, every Marvel movie and show has the exact same criticisms leveled against it: The characters are too snarky, the villain is too generic, the color grading is too bland, the final battle is too focused on over-the-top CGI, etc.

By far the most Marvel-ish thing to come out of Star Wars so far is Solo, although that’s mainly because the director was replaced halfway through production. But the generic feel of that movie has been an anomaly so far, and I sincerely hope it remains that way.

Bobson Dugnutt,

Looking at the clips you have, They seem to need very thorough cleaning. If you’d like, I can do a pretty good job cleaning these clips. If you’re up for it.

They intentionally look degraded: Bobson is using TN1’s grindhouse version of ESB as a base, so he wouldn’t have to clean the added clips to match. But if you can clean those clips so he could use a Blu-ray release as the base instead, I’m sure he’d appreciate it.

… but as long as films like Marvel and what Star Wars is becoming are successful the storyteller will be pushed out of the equation.

The MCU is light years ahead of the Star Wars franchise where consistent story and vision are concerned. Casting, writing, acting, depth, etc - all are significantly better that the Star Wars franchise. That consistent vision also translates to their TV shows as well.

Across both mediums, the MCU holds a solid and connected narrative. After 1977, Star Wars hasn’t even held a narrative from one film to the next.

Sorry, but I heavily disagree. The casting in the MCU may be pretty great, but as far as writing and depth are concerned, the MCU is about as bland as a McDonalds cheeseburger. Every movie feels exactly the same, with virtually nothing interesting happening (especially after Endgame). And the MCU may have a consistent vision, but it’s a horrible vision: with godawful “comedic” dialogue, bland color grading, and distractingly obvious CGI.

Star Wars may not have a consistent direction, and some installments are much worse than others, but at least there’s actual artistry going on there. In my opinion, an inconsistent-quality franchise that has actual passion put behind it is always better than a consistent-quality franchise made by a soulless boardroom committee.
