Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time
I walked into a friends house the other day and they were watching Soccer/Football on TV. I love the game so I immediately walked over behind the couch and was watching. It was a somewhat interesting match. I asked them who was playing, they looked at me weird and said "we are."

That's when I noticed the xbox controllers in their hands.

All I have to say is the lighting and textures, as well as the movement, in FIFA 2005 are amazing. I could have sworn I was watching a real match (I doubt the illusion could have been maintained for more than a few minutes, but it takes a while to notice). I was duly impressed. And now there is a new need in my life: FIFA 2005

The Things We Hate And Love Thread .
Time
I read an article by a guy from the Eagles about how musicians need to find out how to regain control of their own music. Currently the labels control most of it, so a single entity controls the style. Additionally, it gives the industry a corporate face that soothes people's consciences about piracy and stuff. He was talking about how when he was in the industry each band owned their own stuff and labels really only served for distribution and administration type stuff. Not only did it weed out the bad bands from the good ones, but it established a connection between fans and the bands.

And so on and so forth. He didn't know how to make it happen, since there's so much more money to be had in the current system. He was just defining the problem.

It's Friday
Time
I don't know how the dateline falls for all y'all in this international community, but for me it's Friday. What are you all doing this weekend? What will you do when work/classes end?

That's what I'm thinking about now. unfortunately, it involves driving in the rain through Friday traffic up to Philadelphia. Booya. But it's still better than work. Than work today, I mean.

Unused force ability?
Time
Well, Obi Wan felt the destruction of Alderaan, Yoda saw what was going on with Anakin and the sand people. Yoda never talks about the details of Luke's perspective or Anakin's rage, so I don't think he can actually see what is going on. He can just read emotions and state of mind. I think all of those instances are the same power.

I think you're hitting the nail right in the heart of the button.

However, I believe Europe now puts less emphasis on higher education than America. But I worry by the time Teletubbies is done the next generation is going to be mal-developed. We'll see.

But seriously, compare the cartoons we grew up with to modern cartoons. Looney Toons used to familiarize kids with opera and symphony. Bugs Bunny would run intellectual circles around Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck, and we'd try to keep up. Tom and Jerry would fight over a piano while playing the Hungarian Rhapsody. Nowadays cartoons are just entertainment. Maybe we're turning into the Bread and Circus that France fell to...

Enough rambling. I agree, yay for JK Rowling.

Bonus disc question - re original Han/Greedo footage
Time
Well, we used to have several threads on that topic but I guess they got cleaned out. One was a mock trial where Han was being tried for shooting Greedo without provocation. Another talked about 10 things Han shot that didn't shoot him first. Another was a JFK conspiracy thing talking about why Greedo missed from 3 feet away.

I think you'll find everyone is not pleased with that... disgraceful... change.

Yeah, but having a gold robot in the middle of a forest when trying to sneak around is a bit of a giveaway........don't you think!!

He don't exactly blend in with the background now, does he??

Good thing the bad guys all wear helmets that cut off 75 % of their field of vision, then

I think Luke and Vader should have remained on the death star. Done the whole saving, reconciliation thing right there in the throne room. It would have been tragic, but not dark. Tragic in a fulfilling sort of way. Vader had obviously fulfilled his destiny, to have that the fulfillment of Luke's destiny as well would have upped the ante.

I understand that wasn't the tone they were looking for, but it would have been a "bold move" that lucas likes so much.

Halo 2
Time
A couple people said they didn't like it as much...apparently grenades are less accurate, heavy weapon recoil makes it hard to aim (as in real life, an automatic weapon will drift upwards with sustained fire), if you melee while double weilding you drop a weapon, etc.

I haven't played it yet, so I don't know if the good outweighs the bad. I did play multiplayer Halo 1 last night for the first time in quite a while, and it was great. My roommates who haven't played much teamed up against me, who haven't played much VS. but have spent many many hours on campaign mode. It was a slaughter. Very satisfying. And yet deceiving because I know how easily most people could slaughter me.

I guess they were just THAT bad.

My Generation Rocks!!

I think it's good to change our ways of living; I think the world will be better off at a slower pace and all that. I hope that hybrid cars take off and pollution is reduced. I just don't think global warming, extinction, and ice cap melting are real problems. So I disagree with the "emergency" status, but I'm still a bit of a tree-hugger. Recycle! Carpool! Etc!

I wholeheartedly agree (on an interesting side-note, I learned the word "wholehearted" from the read-along ESB companion). Visually they far exceeded anything I had ever imagined. It was just the storyline; like with a lot in the movies they left the details pretty much alone but changed the underlying substance. The ents' role in the story was pretty much the same, but the nature of the Ents and their place in Middle Earth was overhauled.
