I would be interested as well!
Also in regards to a few pages ago, which color grading would be the “correct” one?

Wow I didn’t realize how fuck ugly the teal truly was till I saw a direct comparison

Its pretty grim

looks like there’s no “great” home video release of this movie despite how high profile it is, the 2005 DVD I guess is the most tolerable of them because at least it has none of the alterations the BD has

The point of this thread is to try to acquire the episodes that were edited on DVD but not restored on streaming sites. If anyone has perhaps a syndicated recording that at least has the musical performances intact that would be lovely.

If you go sailing on the high seas, you can find “Taxi Season 1-5” that was shared in 2012. It includes the first 16 episodes of Season 4 as aired in syndication. The other episodes are all from the DVDs, however. I don’t know which episodes are missing music/edits. If you’re aware of such a list, sharing it would be much appreciated.

I remember going through a couple of season 4 episodes on streaming that were edited on DVD and I remember Vienna Waits had scene cut on DVD where two characters sing the Billy Joel song Vienna and then throughout the episode the song itself plays in the transition scenes, as I said earlier this was changed on DVD but it was uncut on streaming

Nina Loves Alex had a scene where Alex sings that was cut on DVD but restored on streaming

There were a few others I noticed but those are the ones I know off the top of my head

Most releases of Iron Man, with the sole exception of the IMAX Enhanced version on Disney+, replace a photo of Iron Man on the front page of The Chronicle at the end because of a rather complicated lawsuit filed by a leaker over that photo.

I never knew about this. Kind of a crazy story, it’s weird that it’s on the new D+ version.

It’s not just the D+ version, it’s on ALL home video versions, the original photo is exclusive to the theatrical versions

On the old BD of Airplane!, there was a boom mic visible in two shots in the mirror during the scene whenever Kramer’s wife is talking to Paul in Kramer’s house that was (poorly) digitally removed, however oddly enough on the new 4K remastered BD, the boom mic was restored along with a small portion of the mirror frame that was accidentally erased on the old master as a result of the sloppy removal

but yet bizarrely enough on the same 4K master, the wires used to throw around the beating heart in a scene towards the beginning of the movie were digitally removed that were visible on the old master

Keeping the original BD release for the bonus features whenever I get around to getting the 4K remastered BD.

The Nightmare Before Christmas changed the original Touchstone logo to the modern Disney logo for the 3D release. The opening credits were also changed to reflect this.

My guess that only applies to the 3D BD, correct? None of the other discs?

unfortunately it applies to all post-2006 home video releases

Taxi (1978-1983) - Seasons 4 and 5 uncut episodes preservation
Time

The last two seasons of Taxi were bastardized when they were released on DVD with several episodes edited due to music rights issues either with songs replaced or scenes cut entirely of characters singing or performing something. Fortunately several of these edits were undone when the show came to streaming on Hulu and so people had the chance to see them uncut again. Unfortunately, similar to the original 90210, there are entire episodes missing as well (seasons 1-3 are affected by this as well but the DVD releases thankfully are uncut for those seasons) due to music rights, so as a result for some episodes that were edited on DVD, they didn’t get the chance to be seen uncut on streaming again.

The point of this thread is to try to acquire the episodes that were edited on DVD but not restored on streaming sites. If anyone has perhaps a syndicated recording that at least has the musical performances intact that would be lovely.

I don’t own it but many have recommended the 2015 Blu-ray.

I am one of the people who also says the 2015 one is the “best” but it’s really saying something

Because compared to other fresher masters released by the same period it looks outdated and crusty, but the advantage is at least it’s the most textured and least tampered with compared to the 4K version

But it is quite clear it’s an older master prepared for either the early BD market or the late DVD market

I made the Theatrical edit using the current BD and the 1080p iTunes copy (which is a small file size, around 4.5 GB, but for now good enough quality to replace the comic book transitions). Turned out rather well.

I don’t suppose you still have it, do you ? I can’t find the theatrical version anywhere.

Amazon Prime has it on their service

LOST - Season 1, 2 and 3 Finales: Original Broadcast Restoration (ON HOLD)

Bumping this thread to see if anyone out there has a high quality HDTV broadcast of Season 3 Episode 23. This project will greatly benefit from the added quality.

Unfortunately I doubt any higher quality version of the broadcast recordings for the season 1-3 finales exist, knowing how TV capture standards were at the time (also how in general “HD” broadcasts were still so heavily compressed they look almost like SD)

However I would suggest replacing the DVD footage with the broadcast footage for seasons 1 and 2 because they lack the ugly EE the DVD masters have at least

Lion King Theatrical unaltered version recreated and remastered (W.I.P. at the moment)
Time

One thing I do know is the 2017 version is preferable because it restores the missing Mufasa cloud in one scene that for some odd reason was taken out of the 2011 version

Could use the theatrical audio from the 2003 DVD version because AFAIK it has no changes whatsoever (mainly could be used to restore the original ambiance during the opening logo)

Further observations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=512YgC0Iimw

I firmly believe the older edit is the theatrical one because of its presence in the Shochiku Home Video LD, a release known to be made with a theatrical element with stuff like cue marks and the MPAA card.

Wow this wouldn’t be the first time MGM had editing errors in a master of theirs

Just thinking of the missing frames and shots on the 1998 DVD of GBU

not a digital alteration - but a massive change to the movie in “When Harry met Sally” when released for DVD:

they had to replace music and songs for licensing reasons - which changes the mood of the pivotal end scenes…

also the movie cuts to black for the end credits (instead of running the credits over the actors chatting away - they also cut out of the chatting pretty harshly and much earlier)

The only mention of this I could find anywhere:
https://www.npr.org/2012/01/03/144624329/the-big-bad-swap-the-problem-with-replaced-music

ah so I did some digging and it appears you misread, all physical home video versions are intact music wise (otherwise it would’ve been reported years ago most likely), it’s the digital versions that have the changed songs

which is still a shame either way

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie - 35mm Re Creation (a WIP)
Time

TonyWDA said:

FWIW, I attended the same 35mm screening at the SVA Theatre that @bslatky brought up some time ago. Before I move forward, I want you to strongly consider the source: I’ve watched and rewatched this movie on DVD with reckless abandon when I was a kid— lines of dialogue, the character’s inflections, incidental music and, yes, even the color timing are practically burned into my psyche. Subsequent viewings as I got older did little to help. So I went into that screening well prepared to point out any (IF any) differences between an original 2004 35mm print and the digitally-sourced home video releases I’d involuntarily committed to memory.

I remember my first and final impressions as if the screening took place merely yesterday, and it can’t be stressed enough: the movie looks no different on 35mm than it does on home video. At least, on this print it didn’t. Frankly, it felt like watching a blown-up version of the DVD/Blu-ray transfer with occasional scratches and dirt marks peppered throughout. Color wise, I couldn’t think back to one instance after the screening where the print didn’t match what was already on home video. I had an identical reaction after a screening of an original 35mm “Iron Giant” print at the MoMA in 2009: point blank, what’s on 35mm is what’s on the pre-Signature-Edition DVDs. So, while I generally admire and fully appreciate the effort to restore/preserve the 35mm film aesthetic where it’s sorely missing, I question exactly what this particular project aims to “restore” to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie that wasn’t already there in the first place. Trailers aren’t always, if ever, a good reference source because the presented color timing was either not final or adjusted during editing to achieve a desired, albeit temporary look. A theatrical camrip isn’t dependable, either. In the theater, where you sit, how bright the projected image is, the condition and color of the screen that the image is projected onto, and the bulb used in the projector all factor into how you see the displayed image. Add to this equation a consumer grade video camera that likely didn’t faithfully capture just what the film looked like on the screen, and you have the least reliable visual reference for a full-fledged restoration project.

Please don’t misunderstand: I’m not poo-pooing your project. I think it’s pretty cool, actually. I simply believe that a different use of terminology would better suit what you’re aiming for here, which is more of a regrade of the approved color timing than a “restoration” in the traditional sense. Strictly in the interest of regrading, any trailers and publicity photos that are to your liking are perfect references for a regrade, and I can’t recommend the color matching tool created by OT’s very own Dr. Dre enough for a project like this. If you use it well, your regrade will look almost dead accurate to whatever reference(s) you choose; provided the colors in both the source and target images aren’t too different from each other, and even then the accuracy of the tool can surprise you. I’ve used it several times for personal restoration/regrade tests and projects. It works like a charm.

Godspeed.

Does the Iron Giant BD have a changed look or somethin?
