Idea: 'In the Heat of the Night' (tv series) - original aspect ratio preservation
Time

I saw the Amazon versions and they’re widescreen too, they have the “free with ads” option and I sampled them specifically to check the aspect ratio, however they do at least have the episodes missing on the DVDs

Based on this I’ve concluded the only available HD masters are 16x9

The 60th Anniversary blu-ray of Psycho is nice in that its the uncut version, but the mono mix on it is just a downscale of the DTS X mix which is rather disappointing as the 50th Anniversary bluray had the original mono mix.

Universal corrected this. They issued replacement discs.

Yea after like two tries, first try was a different coded disk but used the same downmix, the second corrected disk has the true mono track

I got lucky and just got the second batch

Idea: 'In the Heat of the Night' (tv series) - original aspect ratio preservation
Time

In the Heat of the Night (based off of the 1967 movie of the same name) was a TV series that aired on CBS and then NBC from 1988-1995. It’s since become a staple in syndication. However one thing has affected its legacy, like many other shows it’s been cropped to widescreen from the original 4x3 aspect ratio so composition is hugely messed up as a result.

The show was released on DVD by TGG Direct but these releases are notorious for excluding episodes (due to rights issues) and how some of the disks don’t even work on several different players. I’m honestly not sure if these DVD sets are in the original aspect ratio (though it’s likely they are) but if one could get a rip of those that’d be good (especially for the feature length episodes, not sure if they’re presented that way or in two parts on those sets either).

I know a batch of episodes from recordings off of WGN America exist too but it’s highly likely the episodes are trimmed by 2-3 minutes for time. If they aren’t then they’d be especially worthy for the episodes excluded on the DVD releases.

If anyone could send me anything that has the show in its original 4x3 aspect ratio please let me know, this show remains highly popular so I think it’s fitting to preserve how it was meant to be seen.

Help: Looking For... The Stanley Kubrick Collection HDTV Rips

I’m mildly curious as to what that version looks like, as there was an HD master of FMJ used for the early 2006 Blu-Ray & HD-DVD releases that allegedly looked bad. A remaster came out a year later.

Funny thing is Netflix actually did use the 2006 master (I could tell cause the colors looked much weaker than the blu-ray) and I can confirm it looked pretty bad

These specific masters have never been shown in HD anywhere as far as I know. It’s up for debate how accurate any of them were in regards to color. The Shining’s DVD does not even have its original theatrical blue ending credits.

Honestly the best way to watch these is either the boxset DVDs themselves or syncing their mono audio to the UHD releases. The Shining and Full Metal Jacket have DVD mono syncs already. 2001’s UHD comes with its original audio intact. Color-wise the UHD releases look fabulous and are probably as close as we’ll get to original intent.

I wouldn’t say “theatrical” blue credits for The Shining cause there’s no absolute proof that they were blue in theaters

Yes there was an ABC broadcast that had the end credits in blue but who’s to know if they weren’t made blue for the broadcast or it was an error when creating the TV master?

The Shining 35mm preservation thread would like a word? 😉

The laserdisc and DVD share literally the exact same master. I don’t know where these censorship allegations came from.

https://twitter.com/williamfriedkin/status/495446944496377856?lang=es The director disapprove the tv cut

Friedkin is saying it’s a master made for TV and home video exhibition i.e. 4:3 with video generated location titles during the vignettes. There is no censorship and the audio is the theatrical mix.

Here is audiovisual proof.

There is no need for a wild goose chase for the LD version.

Seriously I didn’t realize the DVD wasn’t censored, I just heard somewhere on blu-ray forums it was so was skeptical

Thanks for proving it though

Considering I don’t have that DVD I can’t confirm myself whether or not it’s censored

Info: How many Disney 35mm scans exist?

I’ll be doing more scans soon. We have Covid delays again but I have access to good scanners and to prints.

I’m thinking about setting up a subscription payment system to get things rolling. The goal will be to do every Disney classic - and where possible to scan multiple prints. I might re-scan Pinoke next year as well.

I am 100% in. Sign me up. Quality Disney scans are at the TOP of the list of projects I want to support.

Same here

I’m sure a lot of you remember the recent preservation of the international edit of this movie called Wages of Fear which was drastically different from the version in the US which is what Friedkin prefers. However, this time we will concentrate on this cut rather than the “Wages of Fear” cut. Whenever the movie got a blu-ray release in 2014, it saw an entirely new audio mix created where despite it originally being in stereo, a lot of the sound effects were changed (namely gunshots and explosions) and there is no option for the original mix.

The original US DVD was in stereo but I heard a rumor that it was potentially a TV soundtrack meaning the swearing was taken out, so I was hoping someone would potentially have a rip of the laserdisc or VHS to see if it’s uncut language wise or not. If not one could possibly reconstruct the original mix by restoring the swearing in moments when needed. If anyone has any sources please let me know, I think the original mix really needs preserving of this 70s classic.

The US DVD Is Literally A TV Print

yea that doesn’t surprise me, what about the laserdisc and VHS?
