I think truly the only one I need from an ABC airing is the finale
I think truly the only one I need from an ABC airing is the finale
I’m sure a lot of you know why I’m making this thread. Season 1 is no longer an issue though since Mill Creek issued the uncut versions on DVD a few years ago. Mainly what I’m going into is preservation of the unaltered seasons 8 and 9 episodes. When Anchor Bay released them on DVD there were some edits made to hide music cues that were in the original broadcasts, even a couple of the tag scenes were cut from the episodes.
Mainly what I want are either original ABC recordings or even earlier syndicated recordings of the episodes. The Mill Creek re-releases actually do restore some of the original cues though not all, I can definitely confirm for myself that When You Wish Upon A Star was restored in their version. The only one I think would truly need to be from the original broadcast is Into That Good Night.
Here’s a list of exactly what was edited:
S08E01 - Shower the People You Love with Stuff:
The end tag in black & white with Lecy and Sarah spoofing the Patty Duke intro is removed.
S08E02 - Let Them Eat Junk:
The Looney Tunes theme playing on the tv towards the end is replaced with generic sound effects.
S08E05 - Halloween - the Final Chapter:
The music is replaced when Roseanne talks to Jerry Garcia and during the following dance scene.
S08E10 - Direct to Video:
The “Facts of Life” theme song is replaced when it plays early in the episode, while Dan comments “it was the Friends of the 70s”.
S08E11 - December Bride:
The Milton Berle cameo and a scene where Roseanne is singing christmas songs with a pianist are removed. (The pianist appearance is edited out of syndication as well)
S08E16 - Construction Junction:
The end tag with Tiny Tim teaching David to play the ukulele is removed.
S08E17 - We’re Going to Disney World:
“When You Wish Upon a Star” sung by David is muted out.
S08E18 - Disney World War II:
“When You Wish Upon a Star” is replaced by generic music on three occasions: It’s sung by the cast when they leave the hotel, played when they enter the park and played when Dan runs out of the park. (restored on Mill Creek sets)
S08E24 - Heart & Soul
The music during Darlene and David’s first dance is replaced.
S09E01 - Call Waiting
The “I Dream of Jeannie” theme song heard on tv is replaced.
S09E03 - What a Day for a Daydream
“Super freak” is replaced by disco music when Roseanne and Jackie are at the photo shoot.
S09E05 - Someday My Prince Will Come
The end tag in black and white where Bev sings at a nightclub is removed.
S09E07 - Satan, Darling
A few lines of the “That Girl” theme played when Roseanne is offered to drink from the cauldron is overdubbed.
S09E09 - Roseambo
The rap music when Roseanne dress up as Rambo is replaced.
S09E12 - Home for the Holidays
“Walking in a winter wonderland” is replaced with an instrumental “Silent night” towards the end of the episode.
S09E14 - Hit the Road, Jack
The few lines of “Breaking up is hard to do” heard on the radio as well as instrumental when Dan leaves are both replaced. The end tag with the hermit crab video is removed.
S09E19 - The Miracle
The song towards the end is replaced.
If anyone can provide me with recordings of these episodes with the original cues intact please let me know
S09E23/24 - Into That Good Night
Split into two parts instead of the hour long version as aired on ABC. Not sure if anything is cut but it would be nice to have the original.
I’ll give 20
Considering that bonus feature is 60 minutes long I think so
I know the episode involving Thomas as a Russian was very heavily edited outside the US
I’m sure a lot of people in here will know exactly why I’m after these airings, but in case you don’t here’s an explanation. When the show initially ran on the British channel E4, it featured a lot of music that was omitted on the DVD and streaming releases cause of laziness to obtain the rights.
I know there are some rips of the original airings floating around the internet somewhere and if you have them please send them to me, I’m considering doing a restoration of sorts.
Can I have a link to this?
also the Japanese laserdisc is edited, it has blurs over all instances of visible pubic hair
update:
I met someone on reddit who’s reconstructing the episodes using a variety of recordings and DVD footage, right now he just started on season 5
Very interested to put my hands on it.
Do you have a link to the reddit page or user? Thanks
yes I do
Actually you should be purchasing it. Both cuts are on the Shout Factory Collector’s Edition:

Sadly no one seems to be listening since I said that myself a few months ago

Oh I found them already and shared them on myspleen
I doubt it would be the DVD version
there was no “Japanese version”, the theatrical runtime was 99 minutes
Back to the Future II: not necessarily a digital alteration but definitely a visual one.
The original: featuring “Coming Summer 1990”, as seen at the end of the theatrical and home video versions, including the Blu-ray:
Removed from the version shown in recent years by ITV (UK) and the “BTTF Part III” logo also appears to have been altered from the original.
This is an alteration, but I don’t think this is a recent change. It was actually more recently that the “Coming Summer 1990” was restored after years of it not having been included. I first became aware of it on the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray set and corresponding DVD set. It was not present on the 2002 DVDs or any previous VHS release I have ever seen. I believe it appeared in theaters this way and then was removed for it’s initial video release which is how it remained until 2011.
You’re right it was in theaters that way, I could’ve sworn it was on the 2002 DVDs though, but I do know it was missing entirely on the VHS
I sent a PM
I sent feedback in PM
Well the streaming versions for 4 and 5 are split, so a preservation might still be needed
are you gonna do seasons 4 and 5 as well?
they had the same issue as seasons 1 and 2, the DVD is uncut but the BD and streaming are split
I guess I can take a look at it
I have them all (except for Gypsies…).
In fact, you used my notes to create this post. 😉
I found them on Wikipedia yes

When the show Will & Grace originally aired on NBC, there were a number of super-sized episodes that aired. When the show was released on DVD, there were a number of these that were their syndication edits that were cut down to 21 minutes.
Edited episodes include:
-Ben? Her? (this one is weird, the season 2 DVD has the edited episode but the “Best of Love and Marriage” DVD is uncut)
-Gypsies, Tramps, and Weed (not a super-sized episode but it did use its syndication edit on DVD)
-Women and Children First
-Dolls and Dolls
-May Divorce Be With You
-23
-24
-Dames at Sea
-A-Story, Bee-Story
-Ice Cream Balls
-Strangers With Candace (once again not super-sized but used its syndication edit on DVD)
-Friends With Benefits
If anyone is able to lead me to a source of give me one where they have the original NBC uncut versions of these episodes please let me know
There’s also the issue of the second half of season 7 and season 8 being presented in 4x3 instead of 16x9 as broadcast but that’s something else entirely and I won’t discuss it here.
Ah yes the 1983 laserdisc which is surprisingly good sounding has it
Magnum Force has never had its unedited mono mix on home video as ones that do have it have trimmed shots and other shots time compressed to save the amount of space needed at that time, the 90s stereo mix is the only way to get the original sound effects without any cuts or time compressed shots whatsoever
I have since located the entire original run so no need to search anymore
Most likely the same as the DVD
Why was it edited?
