Idea & Info: Cinerama 70mm '2001' preservation. Is it possible?
Time

Thanks for the heads-up! I looked up when & where 2001:ASO might also be showing in 70mm and all I get is confusing search results from websites that just want hits and more click-thru's:

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

CatBus said:

... there was a user named snicker who had an interesting idea about clipping (with actual good results!).  Basically because not all channels were boosted equally, not all channels clipped equally.  For example, on a lot of clipped colored lights, the red channel is clipped, or possibly the blue channel, but the green channel retains some detail, which could be used in restoring the shot.

An excellent and creative use of a film's own resource. It might have been an original idea snicker had:

http://originaltrilogy.com/FORUM/topic.cfm/New-colormatching-script/topic/15002/

.. but I also saw the technique referenced in some movie restoration documentary (was it The Wizard Of Oz  Blu-ray restoration?).

His version wasn't 100% effective because he didn't take the idea far enough -- to realize that the clipped channel (if only one or two of the R-G-B layers) first must be compressed to make room for information re-purposed from a remaining, non-blownout channel.

If someone is near Syracuse, perhaps they could schedule an appointment to check out th Judith Crist 1971 review and notes from the THX1138 theatrical release?

http://library.syr.edu/digital/guides/c/crist_j.htm

It is in Box 6 of the collection.

Well, I'm as near as The Internet .... so here goes:

I recently saw a mention of the Judith Crist (famed movie reviewer) donation to the  library as caretaker of her works. As I am quite a drive away, I thought to ask if you could look at the collection's "Box 6" for any notes she might have made relating to her review of the George Lucas 1971 film "THX 1138". Specifically, I am interested in her notes on the film proper -- details of it's scenes, observations of it's editing, and other facts of the production -- rather than a critic's opinion of the final result. (Note: this film has gone through several version changes and I would like any information on this now-lost first version appeared during it's 1971 [only] theatrical release.)

If you do find something, can such be relayed to me (by picture attachment or text  transcription)? I would appreciate anything you might find.

Thank you for contacting the Special Collections Research Center at Syracuse University Libraries regarding your inquiry.

I have carefully reviewed Box 6 from the Judith Crist Papers. The box contains an  annotated manuscript of Crist's review of the 1971 film "THX 1138." The manuscript is dated March 29, 1971. The review of "THX 1138" is fully contained on 2 pages of a longer manuscript of approximately 15 pages that documents Crist's response to several recently released films. The "THX 1138" review is largely a plot summary and the writer's overall critical impression of the film. There is no indication that other materials relating to "THX 1138" exist in this collection.

If you would like to order photocopies, please complete, sign and return to us, a Duplication Order form, http://library.syr.edu/find/scrc/services/duplication.php, complete with payment arrangement information. You may email, mail or fax us back a copy of the completed form. We charge $0.25 per page plus shipping costs. We accept Mastercard, Visa, personal checks and money orders drawn on US funds. There is a 150 page limit per project for our photocopy orders. Normal turnaround time for orders is 3 - 5 weeks. Please note that these copies are for research purposes only. If you intend to publish images of or quotations from this material, please contact us as there may be separate forms/fees involved.

I love technology! Disappointment at the speed of light.

It's possible ... if Wikipedia is accurate:

Wikipedia - High-definition television in the United States:

On July 23, 1996, WRAL-TV (the CBS affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina) became the first television station in the United States to broadcast a digital television signal.
...

HDTV sets became available in the U.S. in 1998 and broadcasts began around November 1998.
...

Satellite television companies in the United States, such as Dish Network and DirecTV, started to carry HD programming in 2002.
...

Cable television companies started carrying HDTV in 2003.

So, start searching people!  :D

Some may say, "make the cross-country(s) trip"; I say, "let your fingers do the walking"! (I just love those prophetic, old TV commercials.) ..

10 sci-fi oddities from Google's new digital time machine

Over half way down that webpage is Judith Crist's THX 1138 review portion from her column of the March 29, 1971, New York Magazine ..

No wonder poor ol' Mr. Lucas is so glum about his first film. He keeps trying to fix something that isn't broken just to please the unfeeling critics. Cheer up, GeorgeWe viewers like it just the way it was made ... the 1st time!

Of course, if you want to see that review (on page 61) in the entire column (pages 60-62), finger-walk over to Google books ..

Whoa! That Tech-IB is supposed to be really stable stock, right? I hope you were able to get representative snapshot samples for it's accurate color. That would be an awesome target to shoot for in this restoration. I would be so in-line to work on it! ... (if I can get my present situation sorted out, that is).  :)

That may certainly be true. On the other hand these photos have been the basis for a large number of color correction projects on this forum. However, it would of course be better to compare directly to scans of the print.

You mean people used those photos taken in the theater as reference? What a horrible idea. I don't know what they were thinking.

I would say not even in the ball park for this reason (and the post after it) ...

It's a matter of priorities. (The less important stuff must go ... spouse, offspring, pets, that kind of stuff.)   YOU CAN MAKE IT FIT! 'Cause everyone knows to "let the wookie win".  ;)

Nice work on that! I hope it's not too late to request the added feature of audio comparison? Left channel for a mono-ized 1989 and right channel for a mono-ized 2003. The audio changes should be minimal but the speed & pitch may differ between these uploaded sources.

Hopefully, who ever won that film auction some posts back will definitively answer all our questions & guesses. I'm still hoping the 1st, original, and most-awesome 3D (stereographic) theatrical release will turn up.  :)

This is a job for, who else? ... FANBOYS !! (... just don't tell us the odds ...)

STEP 1: Learn Italian, very quickly! Jawohl?

STEP 2: Steal the print for our 2001 friends (hey, what are friends for?)!

STEP 3: Cut film into individual scene strips, so we can hide every single one of them (Dr. Smith gets credit for that idea)!

Remember ... for Linus ...  :,\  ... and Allofus!  ;D

@5:15 - LUCAS: "And I did have a bunch of meetings with the executives where they wanted to, ya know, take the end of the movie ... and put that at the head of the movie. ... Finally, they cut about five minutes out of it. You know, it didn't make any sense. ... We don't understand it. We don't want to understand it. But we know that if we cut five minutes out of it, it'll make it shorter."

Confirming Warner didn't make an Italian-like cut for the U.S. release, as suggested by other sources quoted here previously (some time ago).

Thanks for those additional differences! At least we can take comfort in the fact that Kubrick wasn't responsible for them ... unLike some one else who jUst Can't let go And move on to newer thingS

BTW, my summation was only addressing those concerns voice by skoal. It was never meant to be considered exhaustive. So do continue to point out any new Discoverys [painfully obvious pun intended] among the various releases.

How to capture HDCP-encrypted HDMI sources (Vudu, Netflix, Directv, Virgin Media, etc.)

A comment on that tutorial referenced another webpage ..

Techsive - How to Record your PC Screen using VLC media player
http://www.techsive.com/2014/08/how-to-record-your-pc-screen-using-vlc.html

"The quality of screen capture is especially great with the VLC media player’s screen recorder, but it is only recommended if your screen capturing needs are basic. For serious projects, it is better to use some dedicated screen recording software like camtasia. VLC cannot record your microphone along with the screen capture and you will have to record and add an audio file separately if you want it."

It looks like VLC is the wrong software of video/audio recording. Camtasia once was one of those videogame recorders, but their website makes no mention of videogame capturing now.

Definitely give FRAPS a look.

The full-function software is $37, but there's a free, limited-feature version you can try. Depending on your machine speed & storage (files are big & mostly uncompressed during capture), you can do this:

Fraps can capture audio and video up to 7680x4800 with custom frame rates from 1 to 120 frames per second!

     World Of Warcraft - 1600x900 @ 30fps
     Trackmania Sunrise - 1280x720 @ 60fps
     Far Cry - 512x384 @ 25fps

I don't see full hi-def video examples. Maybe 1920x1080 @ 30fps is just beyond present software capabilities (but that's why there are hardware solutions).
