Against my better financial and mental judgement, I purchased this reel and am organising for it to be scanned.
Some preliminary images:

Whoa! You are The Man!
BTW, is that how it “should” look? Or does it need narrowed-spectrum processing of the R/G/B’s for that “strong primary colors” look usually associated with Technicolor?

I sure could’ve used those way back on page 24, when trying to color-correct the 16mm without a target … http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/638757

Those who may be dismissive of the technique of “DeHalo_alpha()”, because it produces a softer (less sharp) image, should keep in mind that halo-ing was not a deliberate, stand-alone addition to the picture. Rather it was an artifact of a standard, sub-standard sharpening technique. Reversing the halo-ing itself has the side-effect of removing the sharpening that created it. The only need thereafter is to put the sharpening back in … using a better sharpener.

So, to the previous proof-of-concept using DeHalo_alpha(), I’ve added a mild application of “LimitedSharpen()” to bring the sharpness back to the original picture’s appearance without it’s accompanying halo-ing.

(NOTE: Both DeHalo_alpha() and LimitedSharpen() have bunches of vaguely-defined numbers to control their operations. Ultimately, one must experiment to determine how each number affects the final result, and in what way. I did much back-and-forth until finally settling on these numbers used for this proof-of-concept. They should not, necessarily, be considered definitive.)

[again, the view is x2 magnified for inspection]

DeHalo_alpha( rx=1.5, ry=2.85, darkstr=1.2, brightstr=1.2 )
LimitedSharpen( ss_x=3.0, ss_y=3.0, strength=150, Lmode=2, soft=true, edgemode=1, exborder=4 )
Tweak( cont=1.0, bright=-5, coring=false )

As can be seen, the “after” picture looks just like the “before” picture, sans the before’s pronounced halo-ing. Even more, a side benefit of reversing the sub-standard sharpening has reduced it’s pronounced jaggies. With the picture now properly sharpened, those jaggies have remained reduced. It looks like a win-win solution to me!

May I guess you’re browsing with Firefox? In FF-v.37 (the system I’m using), many pictures from ImageShack won’t come through; but they DO come through in Opera-v.12. Is it Firefox-gone-broken or the-politics-of-ImageShack? (Well, I don’t use ImageShack any more after they wiped away their previous database and most of OT’s pictures in the process in a re-organization about a year or so ago.)

In Firefox, my solution is to right-click on the “missing picture” area, select “view image”, hi-light the address-bar for the image (not showing at this point), and press the Enter-key (to force a hard refresh). The picture will come through if ImageShack still has it. I’ve already tested it and ImageShack still has them all. What a pain! : )

Screenshot 3 looks almost over sharp - the other two look great 😃

This is just out of curiousity - is there any way to run a halo analysis pass that finds “halos”, then direct avisynth to replace only those spots with a version of your SR script that is less halo strong?

There was some discussion a while ago about the halo’s, and g-force recently suggested a solution a few posts back that seemed feasible, but also a ton of work, so if anyone wants to try they’re more than welcome, but I will take a pass 😉.

Like this before & after (x2 magnified)?

DeHalo_alpha( rx=1.5, ry=2.85, darkstr=1.2, brightstr=1.2 )
Tweak( bright=-4, coring=false )

And it really does wonders on the captain’s helmet strap.

Is there a way to supplement (or supplant) “markdown-it” formatting (it’s non-intuitive, difficult to use, and doesn’t easily [or at all] produce what the poster tries to do) with standard, proven, and well-known forum formatting codes (if we really want to do it manually)?
After all, there’s no real reason to re-invent the wheel . . .

. . . okay, maybe for <-- that wheel.

(The above took me x5 longer to do just to find out it won’t come out the way I wanted it.)

[EDIT] BTW, going with the standard also means that the years and years of previous posts might/will no longer be “broken”, as they presently have become.

Possible Ethernet network onboard card dead?
Time

Assuming a version of MS Windows, look in the Device Manager for Network Adapters, wherein your Realtek card will have a listing. Right-click for Properties and see if Device Status states “This device is working properly.”

Also, with the system turned off and unplugged, pull the card out, clean the contacts with a soft eraser, and put it back in. (This also re-seats the card, which is something to do anyway for intermittent operation.) Test again.

Finally, the cards are cheap, so get another one. The first one probably was zapped by static electricity or a surge-spike (or manufacturing weakness by Chinese slave labor on a bad day). If it ever happens again, put all your cabling through a surge-suppressor, which may it’s a good idea regardless (or pray for all the poor communist slaves the world over).

Thanks, but … if this is easy for you to do …
could you get 5 sequential frames, from each source (matching frames of that same shot), and save them in non-compressed format (.PNG)?
Aside from not having saved compression-artifacts in the caps, I wanted to test if temporal-noise-reduction would produce an even better HSL recombination.

DirectShowSource(“X:\Movies\2001 ASO-BD\2001-ASO-BD.mkv”,fps=23.976,audio=false,convertfps=true)

While the LD has interlaced frames (30fps; technically 29.97), the BR has progressive frames (24fps; technically 23.976). It’s the LD that needs to be “converted” (de-interlaced back to 24fps). If you’re “ripping” the BR, it’s already progressive and doesn’t need to be “converted”, perhaps just frame-rate specified.

When you’re making a disc, the media will remain at 24fps, but pulldown_flag-ed for the 30fps display.

That should make everything sync perfect.
Otherwise …

“Wow!” is right! I’m stunned that anyone would dare alter Stanley Kubrick's work like that!

You betta not, or da Stan-man gonna get-ya! O-o-oh mercy!

Are you sure this wasn’t the result of a capture/rip or system-overload anomaly?

Is there one particularly obvious shot where they both start in-sync and are guaranteed to go out of sync by the shot’s end? Would it be possible to put up a link to that shot (from the 2 sources) for inspection (by those of us who don’t have access just now)?

Whoa! That is excellent! I, too, would like to know your recommendations for the 2K-to-4K upgrade.

 • How do these captures compare to the awesome pro equipment to which you have access?
 • Do you have any same-source caps of the pro and home-brew hardware to post here?
 • What is the diminishing-returns in the type of components you recommend for the home-brew setup (2K and 4K)?

I don’t know how much programming (if any) is built into the software. Properly coded, a webpage will look 99% identical across the popular browsers that people daily use. (I, myself, am testing the top ones to find the greatest in all the galaxy.) Just thought you’d like to see, even at this early stage, how OriginalTrilogy.com looks in a couple of these (on a Windows Vista system):

Firefox (v.37)
Opera (v.12)

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

Your YouTube find was probably from the 2004 DVD (see this post from page 52 - http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/623747 ) but definitely not the Blu-ray.

The new forum has broken-up our meticulous formatting from the old forum. But those are presently the pieces, so put them together as best you can. (Since the new forum is a beta, maybe that will all be technologically fixed before too long.)

Sorry to say, but Judith Crist's page-and-a-half review arrived and it contains only a few hand-written editing notes:

Thanks for the heads-up SilverWook! I squeezed both early versions in my write-in (while the survey was still open) -- the 1971 theatrical release version, and (or) the 1978 Lucas original version.

If not too much bother, would you post/link to matching .PNG's of the sources I was testing. It's anomalies still haunts me and I'd like to further explore it with uncompressed sources (and, maybe, matching samples from all your sources?) Loose ends drive me Royally Batty.
