Idea: Revenge of the Sith: Extended Edition
Time
Well, it's on a VHS right now. It's pretty poor stuff compared to what is out now. We (my friend Brad and I) just re-incorperated the Biggs scenes, the cantina rough cut, the Jabba footage from From Star Wars to Jedi, and the cut Chief Bast sequence from the Star Wars Holiday Special. I think we moved a few scenes around to match the revised 4th draft, like C-3PO's I think I'm melting scene to the Tantive IV. And we did some funky stuff on there as well. We re-dubbed the Chief Bast scene so his lines better fit the script and replaced the crappy music from the Special. And we added an introductory shot of TIE fighters flying (we used one from the opening of TROOPS). And, get this, we somehow thought it was a good idea to edit and synche up audio from the radio drama and stick it over the Luke/Treadwell scene which was released with only projector noise. Blasted thing took me hours to get it edited to match the video. Brad then put it into the video track and we stuck it in our film. We also sent a copy of this clip to T-Bone's Star Wars Universe, which he put up on line. Now I see my little clip up on all sorts of Bonus Discs. I feel like a proud pappy!

Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. The tape is interesting as a rough guide as what the rough cut might have been a bit more like. And it has a few special edition shots in it as well. It is a bit of a mess, but it was way ahead of its time in 1998 or whenever we made the thing. I can make someone a copy of the tape if they want, but honestly Deleted Magic is a much better guide for producing 'rough cut' version. I do plan on re-visiting the project someday, I just have a few other (related) items to tackle first.

I did that a few years ago, soon as the Behind the Magic CD-ROM came out. It wasn't too shabby, and it helped inspire my defunct website on the rough cut, which was enjoyed by a young film-maker named Garrett; but I'd want more on there than just the Biggs scenes, the Obi-wan's house scene and the original Jabba footage. Deleted Magic gets you closer to the rough cut than anything else has before. You could edit all of the material presented in Deleted Magic into a version closer to the rough cut, but I'd wait to see if Lucas released anything else in the next year.

Wasn't this thread about Revenge of the Sith?

This reminds me of the time I watched Bridge on the River Kwai to see if Alec Guiness said the words 'Kwai' and 'gone' to see if I could fix (for fun) a scene in a certain movie that has six in the title.

... I really like the filmstrip in the new Deleted Magic, the images are well chosen and nice. Would like to see a photo montage on it, Lucas and Biggs and Jabba perhaps. Maybe I should get off my ass and create something. Heh.

You already make the best movies. Let some of the rest of us get a shot at the glory.

Joshua Klein, DVD columnist for the Chicago Tribune, interviewed me today. He's not a huge fan of Deleted Magic but enjoyed the Star Wars Classic Edition disc a lot, and we talked at length about Originaltrilogy.com and the ways fans are finding to preserve these classic movies and give them the respect they deserve. We talked about a lot of things so I have no idea what he's going to use.

He'll be doing an article about Classic Edition and the O-OT in ... tuesday's paper I think?

Have a look for it.

I am SO going to get sued by Lucasfilm.

I'll send you a cake with a file in it.

For some reason, I was thinking you guys were talking about when Ben appears to Luke on Hoth, instead of when Luke was calling out to Ben on the Cloud City weather vane. Thought would be a great change.

Personally I was talking about both! There are parallels with both scenarios, but in particular Luke and Anakin's position as they lay dying in extreme cold and heat respectively. If Qui-Gon's spirit were to appear it would then mirror Hoth much more than Cloud City.

And I totally agree Anakin should disappear at the end of RotJ. Trooperman has said he has no plans to edit the OT, but maybe we can persuade him to make a few minor alterations for the good of the saga.

Or maybe that particular scene as a bonus feature on one of the prequel discs.

Or maybe if Darth Editous ever does a ROTJ disc. That would be the NEW HOTNESS!!

SuperTrooper,

I see what you mean by having Anakin communicating with Qui-Gon throughout the trilogy. Having Anakin being able to hear Qui-Gon would emphasise his power as the chosen one. And I like the idea of Anakin calling out to Qui-Gon at the end of Sith would be an awesome parallel with ESB. For some reason, I was thinking you guys were talking about when Ben appears to Luke on Hoth, instead of when Luke was calling out to Ben on the Cloud City weather vane. Maybe you should then construt a difference between hearing dead Jedi and seeing dead Jedi. Dead Jedi could talk to those who are able to hear them, but they can only be seen by those who learn how. If you change that one Yoda line, it would set up the scenario nicely.

What happened to Sebastian... uh, Anakin is that he died on the ramp of the shuttle. He didn't show him fading away. The shot cut away before it happened. If it did. Next time we saw him, it was the suit burning on the pyre on Endor. Sure, Anakin could have been in there, but it didn't need to be. Besides, burning an empty suit is a fine symbol of the end of the Empire. THis is the lastshot of Anakin in Jedi:

It is a couple of seconds long. Should it be necessary, It would be easy to edit Anakin fading out here.
