The First Rough Cut (7/1976)
As the film was being completed in '76, George Lucas and Gary Kurtz hired John Jympson to edit the film. Jympson assembled a rough cut of the film from all the footage available. Called "The Star Wars", this footage was a 35mm black and white print made from the original color negatives. This print was assembled together to follow the shooting script (the revised 4th draft) to show how the film was progressing.
The original rough cut took up 13 reels of film and contained 30 to 40 percent different footage from the Academy Award winning final edit. It contained different angles of shots, additional scenes, and longer sequences. The rough cut didn't have any of the footage of the rebels aboard the blockade runner, as this footage was still being filmed. Special effects were not part of the film either, so the laserblasts weren't there and the lightsabers didn't glow. The exterior space shots were also absent as ILM was just beginning to produce their models and filming techniques. This rough cut was also a silent film. This version was recently explored by Dr. David West Reynolds for the Star Wars Insider (issue #41). Most of the information and many of the pictures used on this site come from there.
I think I would like to know what he thought of the scenes that were later replaced by pick-up shooting. What did the film look like before: 1/12/77 With additional funding secured from FOX, a week of additional photography and re-shoot footage begins at Death Valley, California. First off is new landspeeder footage (without Mark Hamill on the first few days, who is recovering from car crash injuries. Though he is released from hospital a few days later, the scenes he later shoots at Death Valley are unusable due to his facial injuries being so prominent). Also filmed are sequences with a Bantha, played by Mardji the Elephant, and filmed in Desolation Canyon.
The area named Dante’s View was used for the reshoot view of Mos Eisley spaceport, whilst the scene of Artoo wandering through the rocky hills of the Dune Sea area (and the previous moment where he and Threepio go their separate ways) were filmed at Stovepipe Wells Village, whilst his newly shot capture by the Jawas was taken at Artoo’s Arroyo

As for me, I think I envisioned the prequels as being in the same spirit as the first TPM trailer. I actually sat through Wing Commander just to watch it. The saber fights, the music, the exotic creatures... man! It was awesome!

Actually, the only reason I'm hoping it is a clean version of the Special is to get quality versions of the two Star Wars cut scenes. Other than that, I'm not really interested.

BTW, the Kashyyyk paintings (some of them) were done for the book, The Illustrated Star Wars Universe. They certianly were inspired by the Holiday Special. McQuarrie did paintings for the Special earlier than the book came out.

I don't even know HOW to describe it. Tennessee dodged a bullet.. No, not a bullet, a hail of gun fire.
They were up 21-0 at half time. They didn't score AT ALL in the second half, while South Carolina dominated, and scored 3 times. So it was 21-21. South Carolina scored a field goal and almost another touch down until it was intercepted.
Tennessee made a mediocre drive in which their biggest gain was due to a forward fumble that a BACK UP line man recovered. They get into touchdown range, fumble AGAIN and recover. The quarterback has to spike the ball. Nine seconds on the clock; they kick a field goal and MISS.
But there's a penalty on the play. Five yards back, repeat the down.
The second attempt, the guy hits the field goal. 24-24. The game goes into overtime. As pitiful as Tennessee as the Vols have been doing, overtime has disaster written all over it. They lose the toss and have to do Offense first. They don't make it to the endzone and have to kick a field goal, and it's good.
South Carolina gets the ball. All the need is a touchdown to win, but they don't get it, the attempt sails over their guys head. They have to kick a field goal, and their kicker is incredible.
The kicker then misses what should have been an easy kick.
So it was like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and having victory get mad and take it back.

So a few questions and ideas for Adywan:
Deleted Magic pointed out a film crew member that helps push R5-D4 from the sandcrawler and goes to hide behind the treadwell droid. Any chance you could paint him out?
You were going to modify Ben's line of "Your father wanted you to have this..." Did this change get made?
The ILM crew erased too much of the bottom of Luke's speeder as the heroes pulled up to the cantina fir the special edition. Can you fix this?
You mentioned replacing Ponda Baba's paw with a flipper for the limb on the floor scene. Did this get done? The smoke coming off the cauterized wound looks great, btw.
And a tough one... The costume for Kenny Baker had holes in the base so Mr. Baker could rock the costume back and forth for some of those scenes. His feet were hid by black tubing. Any chance these could be painted out?
You mentioned earlier that we would be seeing the Death Star superlaser beginning to fire before it explodes. Is this still being planned? It would be cool to see a white flash blast through the Death Star before it blew up, similiar to the one in ROTJ.
That's all for now.

So I was looking over some of the notes I was sharing with OCP when he was cobbling together Deleted Magic and I found some observations and other items that never made it in to DM or things that proved to be inaccurate. So... based on the revised 4th draft the script:
FADE IN...
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away
an incredible adventure took place...
FADE OUT...
FADE IN
1. EXT. SPACE
A vast sea of stars serves as the backdrop for the MAIN TITLE. War drums echo through the heavens, as a ROLLUP slowly crawls into infinity...
It is a period of civil wars in the galaxy. A brave alliance of underground freedom fighters has challenged the tyranny and oppression of the awesome GALACTIC EMPIRE....
We've already discussed this. The crawl DM has is cool (his is from the 3rd draft) but it too weird for my tastes. I'm glad to see this closer to the rough cut.
2. INT. REBEL SPACEFIGHTER - MAIN PASSAGEWAY
...An explosion hits near the robots and the lanky Threepio becomes entangled in the mass of dangling wires, which spark and pop every time he attempts to move. Artoo waddles to his friends aid.
THREEPIO
Help me! I think something is melting... This is all your fault! I should have known better than to trust the logic of a half-sized thermocapsulary dehousing assister...
Artoo counters with an angry rebuttal as the battle rages around the two hapless robots.
One of the things that I tried to get OCP to emphasise is the likelyhood of the droids walking through the lasers in the corridor was filmed as an unscripted gag, which the rough cut was notorious for having. Much akin to Chewie scaring the mouse droid or the cut moment where Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie stroll past Imperial Officers while whistling and hiding their guns behind their backs. (is it any wonder that a majority of the British filming crew thought the film was 'complete rubbish'?
I'm sure you will note that the "I think I am melting" scene was moved to much later on in the film. In the shot with Artoo laughing at Threepio, I'm not sure where Artoo is or where this footage was taken as the background doesn't really resemble the control room in the Death Star or anywhere else (that I can tell).
8 EXT. ANCHORHEAD SETTLEMENT - POWER STATION - DAY
Heat waves radiate from the dozen or so bleached white buildings. Luke pilots his landspeeder through the dusty empty street of the tiny settlement. An old WOMAN runs to get out of the way of the speeding vehicle, shaking her fist at Luke as he flies past.
WOMAN
I've told you kids to slow down!
I'd love to see more on this scene, although I'm not sure how much more can be done aside from showing the daily from the Insider magazine.
19 INT. SANDCRAWLER - HOLD AREA
It is dim inside the hold area of the Sandcrawler. Artoo switches on a small floodlight on his forehead and stumbles around the scrap heap. The narrow beam swings across rusty metal rocket parts and an array of grotesquely twisted and maimed astro-robots. He lets out a pathetic electronic whimper and stumbles off toward what appears to be a door at the end of the chamber.
20 INT. SANDCRAWLER - PRISON AREA
Artoo enters a wide room with a four-foot ceiling. In the middle of the scrap heap sit a dozen or so robots of various shapes and sizes. Some are engaged in electronic conversation, while others simply mill about. A voice of recognition calls out from the gloom.
While scene 19 was omitted from the revised 4th that is going around the net, the published version of the script has this curious mention of a second room. Thoughts?
28. INT. LARS HOMESTEAD - KITCHEN - LATE AFTERNOON
Luke's Aunt Beru, a warm motherly woman, fills a pitcher with blue milk from a refrigerated container in the well used kitchen. She puts the pitcher on a tray with some bowls of food and starts for the dining area.
Blue milk! What could be more exciting that watching Aunt Beru serve some supper!
29. EXT. TATOOINE - LARS HOMESTEAD - ENTRY AREA - SALT FLAT
The giant twin suns of Tatooine slowly disappear behind a distant dune range. Luke stands watching them for a few moments, then reluctantly enters the domed entrance to the homestead.
The Editdroid bonus discs have this with the alternate score as well as the dianoga scene. But you are already on this, I’m sure.
A50. EXT. TATOOINE - MOS EISLEY - STREET - ALLEYWAY - USED SPEEDER LOT
BEN
If the ship's as fast as he's boasting, we ought to do well.
The curious thing about this line is that it was replaced with an alternate take in the DVD release of 2004.
1977: “If the ship's as fast as he's boasting…”
2004: “If the ship's as fast as his boasting…”
This last take adds a bit of wit that was missing before. I tried to put notice of this change on wiki, put some know-it-all kept taking it down.
116. INT. DEATH STAR - HALLWAY LEADING TO MAIN FORWARD BAY
VADER
Your powers are weak... old man, you should never have come back.
I’d love to see this dialogue reconstructed.
The information of Jack Klaff as Red 4 in the briefing room as reported in DM is now believed to be wrong.
That’s it for now.
