This is mostly true. Ian's stunt double did most of the dueling with Sam Jackson for the wide shots with Ian doing the work for close ups. ILM then added Ian's head and face over the stunt double's head. So there will unavoidably be CG phoney-ness in there.

And Ady did do some work on the stripes for the parked X-wings in the Yavin base. I'm not sure if he did more than that.

Also, did you remove "You father wanted you to have this when you were old enough." Or just the first part of the line? Technically you could probably make the line, "I wanted you to have this when you were old enough." I believe you could take Guinness saying "I" from another part of the films.

The blinking chest plate is definitely in there. Honestly, it looks so natural, I forget that he even made that change.

so for what it's worth, it's not a 'preservation' - but it's a heck of a lot more watchable

Not to brag, but, um... nevermind. I'm not sure exactly where that Ben Kenobi clip would have been in the rough cut, but I think it was before he deactivated the tractor beam. The "shooting script" has a few 'OMITTED' items in it where it could fit.
um...
so, those clips were pretty cool, huh? Is that Alec Guiness documentary available anywhere? Is there more SW footage in it?

There was lots of both him and Han and Luke sneaking around the Death Star in the script and the rough cut.
86 INT. DEATH STAR - MAIN HALLWAY
Several Imperial officers walk through the wide main passageway. They pass several stormtroopers and a robot similar to Threepio but with an insect face. At the far end of the hallway, a passing flash of Ben Kenobi appears, then disappears down a small hallway. His appearance was so fleeting that it is hard to tell if he was real or just an illusion. No one in the hallway seemed to notice him.

This picture

is from the IMAX documentary about Special Effects. The opening battle sequence looked awesome on the BIG screen, but there was a later shot of the Falcon jumping to hyperspace that really floored me.

To answer your question, yes, its much less screwed up than the film. Definitly imperfect but I would have rather had this version filmed than what we got.

Where is the rest of this book? And is the rest of the 1st draft of TPM also less screwed up than the movie?
