Also, I just listened to the commentary and have a question for Hal (and everyone else): When watching Rey tap into the Force and overpower Kylo at the end, do you interpret this as her using the Dark Side, or just harnessing the ‘light’ which has ‘always been there’? I ask this because if Rey were so susceptible to the Dark Side here, that might constitute a very great character flaw and go a long way towards making her a more dynamic lead.

BTW, thanks for the many shout outs in the commentary Hal, you’re really too kind!

V1 was mediocre at best and at that time I just hoped that someone would take the idea and run with it, so you and Ridley deserve all the credit I can give.

I just got V3 and checked out your wonderful commentary, I just wanted to say that you did credit me correctly (not that it really matters, but you said that you might have gotten it wrong). There was some confusion earlier regarding the deleted scene, but you credit Neverar for putting the scene together and then me for the effects and how the scene is a great example of our collaboration. So, thank you for all your hard work and your insightful commentary track. It’s a top of the line fan-edit release.

I also want to say this edit is absolutely unreal. Honestly, in my opinion the best ep7 edit. One other question can anything be done about the music during the falcon tie chase on jakku? Ep5 asteroid chase theme is all I can think about watching that scene.

thanks for making this excellent edit.

I’ve been trying to add the TIE Fighter Attack music from TLJ (part of The Battle of Crait and the end credits, originally from ANH, also appears in Solo), but it’s a pretty long sequence and it takes a lot of editing. Haven’t given up quite yet though.

I suppose she just taps into the Force, and through her it can be used for both good and evil, but since she has no training or experience in using the Force it’s just pure intuition which in this case might lean to the dark side or somewhere in the middle.

Look Who’s back… (W.I.P.)

With the Sebastian Shaw force ghost of Anakin restored in this shot the scene of Luke removing Vader’s helmet revealing Anakin’s face should without a doubt be the unaltered original face.

But with that in mind, should the eyebrows be removed or left alone?

Removed eyebrows makes sense considering the burns and the lack of hair. They do look nice though. Perhaps the dark side is a pathway to eyebrows some consider unnatural.

Indeed! It may have been me who misspoke, in the commentary itself. 😬

Ah, the sleep deprived commentary. 😉 No worries.

The edit is in progress, and probably won’t be released for quite some time due to the number of edit’s I’m still working on.

As for the TIE crash, I can see your sequence working, but you’d have to lose the scene of the female officer informing Hux of the impending crash. I’m working on some ideas for that scene right now though, and it might be worth losing that bit.

JEDIT: Here’s a somewhat rough mockup of a much earlier concept - the First Order has visited the crash site before Finn wakes up and has left a probe droid behind:

https://vimeo.com/312448116

Password: fanedit

What it really needs is a decent establishing shot of the droid.

Force Awakens Restructured V3 is amazing. HAL 9000 gives you a TON of credit in the commentary. I just need to know, how did you get the time stamp off of the deleted scene with Leia!?

I removed the time stamp from the deleted scene where Leia talks to Snap Wexley and Korr Sella (NeverarGreat did a small part of it too) for TFA Restructured. I used Adobe After Effects to recreate the video hidden behind the time code piece by piece by using still images that were animated to move around and follow the background (and sometimes people and objects) that moved behind the time code. Some shots were easy with a simple background while others needed many layers of objects that had to be animated in various ways to recreate the hidden footage.

Extraordinary work, I should’ve double checked that it was you not Neverar lol

If you want to see the process I used for removing the timestamp from one shot (which was quite similar to Ridley’s approach on the rest of the scene), I posted a little walkthrough here (page 7 of this thread):

https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Force-Awakens-The-Starlight-Project/id/54912/page/7#1147760

Good walkthrough, this is basically how I did it too.

I can furnish you with the footage, certainly.
I’d like to think ROTJ could be out in time for a pre-IX viewing, but it’ll depend on a color corrected source becoming available, Adywan most likely.

If you did want to tackle this, I can send you all the relevant shots from both versions, take the results, and sync Hairy Hen’s, the 1997 SE, and the BluRay audio to it in order to hand off a finished sequence ready for use by whomever.

That would be helpful! If you send over the shots I can get started when inspiration kicks in.

That’s good thinking. At some point I’ll have to make a thread dedicated to sharing my FX shots that fan editors might want to use. I could share some how-to’s as well.

About the Sarlacc, I guess I do volunteer, but I will probably wait until you start work on ROTJ before I try anything. And I’ll need some help getting good quality OOT footage, I guess a clip from 4K83 might be the best choice.

No no, ask, by all means. 😉 I rewatched the scene just now, and I think it would be doable. In many shots the tentacles are visible without the beak, so no change needed for those. And in the other shots the OOT could be overlayed on the beak. In some cases the beak overlaps one or more of the tentacles, so those tentacles would need to be added in separately over the OOT visuals. All in all it would take some work, but it doesn’t seem too difficult.

While I am waiting on a brief snippet of FX work for one shot, I was able to sit down and record a sleep-deprived commentary track for V3 of this project.

It’s… good (?).

The “sleep-deprived” part somehow makes this sound even more interesting.

By the way, the Kylo scar is mostly done so I should be able to have it ready before you finish.

(btw, the downed Star Destroyer comparison image is flickering a fair bit - though could just be my pc; just a heads-up)

Thank you! Yeah, something odd with that one. It doesn’t even show the regraded image for me. Might have to reupload.

Jedit:
Couldn’t make that shot work on Diff.pics for some reason so here it is on Imgur instead: https://imgur.com/a/TmrSbc8

So I didn’t originally plan to adjust the color grade of the movie, but after seeing NeverarGreat’s new color grade for his TFA edit I saw how a changed look could benefit the movie. So here are a few comparison images for what I’ve got so far. I started out with basic changes that could be applied to the entire movie and then I adjusted the look of different scenes separately, so there are different grades depending on the setting and lighting. My main goals with the grade is to make the film a bit more vibrant, change the color balance to be a bit more neutral (I think the original grade is a bit too teal or purple in some cases) and brighten up the darkest scenes a bit.

Nice work! Personally I prefer the look without your extra curves adjustments, a little more subtle. I’m working on a new grade for my edit as well, inspired by your efforts here. I’ll try out your LUT too, thanks for sharing!

I agree that the original brightness is quite adequate in most places, and no global LUT is going to fix it. The extra contrast in the last screenshots was just to see how bad the brightest shots fared.

I don’t disagree with making the film brighter in dark scenes, but the last screenshots have a saturated green and orange look to it with a bit too much contrast for my taste. Personally I would rather brighten the mid-range or increase the exposure in the dark scenes instead of increasing the overall contrast. But you do what makes sense for your Technicolor look, our goals are a bit different.

The first shot can be cropped, yes. I will try to clean up the second shot. I have also thought about creating a new shot, like you say. I even ordered a pair of cheap chinese Solo dice online yesterday, we’ll see if they look good enough when they turn up.

As you say there is a bit of a continuity issue going from the original shot in the movie to the first new shot with the dice so I’m trying to put a different shot or two between them to make the transition work. There are a few more shots of Han in the cockpit in the documentary, so I’m trying a few things with those.

Here’s something I don’t think I’ve seen before. An unused shot of Han hanging up his dice in the Falcon. Concidering how they show up in TLJ (and Solo) I thought it might be nice to show them in TFA. But where is this clip from? Is it available in high quality somewhere? Looks like it might be from a behind the scenes video, could it be on the blu-ray? https://twitter.com/theswlegacy/status/953379237242732544

I believe it’s on the feature doc on the blu-ray, yes. Really annoying that they didn’t put it in the film or on the BD as a deleted scene.

Ah, thanks! I’ll see if I can locate it. Not sure if it fits into the film somewhere or if the footage can be used at all but I’ll look into it.

Jedit: There it is!
