The Star Wars Show shows off a deleted scene!

https://youtu.be/HjoJqZDjxgI

Good news:
The time code is outside the image.

Bad news:
The effects are unfinished, so it would take a lot of work to make it useable.

Perhaps other deleted scenes are in better condition, if they’re not effects heavy.

It’s a nice scene but probably unfixable for any fans. It’s one of the few settings in the movie with such heavy background compositing though, off the top of my head I doubt too many of the other scenes will be in this kind of shape.

Nothing’s unfixable. 😉 If this is a scene people want to use I think it could be done. By me or someone else.

It absolutely can be improved (by fixable I mean professional quality). There are certain things that’d be real tricky without resources though, mainly the background replacement.

Yeah, it wouldn’t be easy and it wouldn’t be flawless. I’m mostly worried about all the rotoscoping you’d have to do, and the hardest part is probably Phasmas armor which they enhance digitally to get the right reflections, hence all the red tracking dots on her.

Yup, exactly.

Personally I’m not sure I consider the scene worth the work, I don’t feel a huge urge to put it back in.

I quite like the scene, it’s a nice little moment for both Finn and Phasma, but ultimately I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t totally kill the pacing of that sequence. Plus, the final Finn/Phasma moment is already pretty great anyway.

It’s pretty good, at least it fleshes out Phasma a bit more (but for what?). But the “rebel scum” line doesn’t feel as good here.

Happy to help! 😄 Nice to see such positive reactions, and that some of you spotted the necklace. I agree it’s not easy to see, but that felt like the natural spot for it. Might’ve looked awkward if it was higher up.

I thought that that was the point so I was looking for it - and that’s what left me astonished. You could’ve fucked up by tryin to make it super noticeable but it was perfectly and seamslessly inserted. I’m amazed.

And I’m not even going to start on the colors and contrast and how well it blends in with the rest. 😄

Ah yes, I see. 😉 Thank you!

WHY ISN’T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT A WOMAN WANTING TO SEX UP AN X-FILES CREATURE OF THE WEEK?!?!?!

Because in the realms of Science Fiction and fantasy it’s not that big a deal? The most famous alien in SF history is the result of a Earth girl getting it on with a green blooded pointy-eared hobgoblin. Of course it was the logical thing to do. 😉

Huh, can’t figure out who this “most famous alien” is. Is it Alien/Xenomorph? Don’t remember any hobgoblin. Yoda? 😛 He’s green and pointy eared and famous. E.T.? Nah.

I’m now googling famous aliens. The little green aliens from Toy Story? Alf? Na’vi? Kang/Kodos? … Spock? Not familiar enough with Star Trek to know. All of these have pointy ears though, so that’s something.

Man they ruined Yoda being in the film in a trailer? Glad I didn’t watch that. Being totally surprised when he showed up was delightful. How he looked was disappointing however but i got over it.

Well, it’s an extra spoilery trailer recently released to promote the Blu-ray. I guess they assume everyone who cares has seen the movie at this point (or maybe will avoid the trailer otherwise).

I was actually spoiled about Yoda in a review before seeing the movie. But that wasn’t as bad as when I saw TFA and some internet troll had spoiled that “Kylo kills his father Han Solo”. Still enjoyed it.

I think it’s a big misunderstanding to say that Kathleen Kennedy put that scene in the film but I’ve seen a few people suggest that. What Rian said was that Kathleen was interested in seeing Leia show force powers, it’s a stretch to believe that Kathy decided how they should be shown. She would leave the writing to the writer.

That section of the interview starts at about 19:20.

Nice that they gave her some Force-related scenes but they didn’t bother to make her relevant to the plot other than being an RotJ Ackbar-like character like in TFA (what I mean is: she’s the boss of the rebel band… and that’s it). These are the priorities.

Honestly, how is this a big improvement over RotJ? Or even the entire OT? Because Leia didn’t have a character arc in the OT other than a devolution of her character in the Jabba scenes (“Who cares about the galaxy? I must save my love interest!”). And the twist in RotJ had no impact to the story other than two bits of the climax (the Vader-Luke duel and solving the love triangle after the destruction of the second Death Star). And it’s quite sad how Han and Luke gets all the attention in the ST, even after leaving the rest of the galaxy at the mercy of the First Order, but Leia remains all the whole time, creates a paramilitary force and warns the New Republic and yet she’s mostly a background character in these movies.

Sorry, I’m really disappointed with how they have handled the female characters in the Disney movies. They’re not really a huge improvement compared with the Lucas era, other than being more in number, technically being the main protagonists and the lack of sexualization/forced romance.

I think Carrie Fisher is on record as saying that Episode 9 was to be ‘her’ film? (in regards of the 3 main OT cast… Han got most of the scenes in TFA, Luke had most of TLJ, and that IX would Leia’s) - obviously, and sadly, that is no longer going to be the case.

That’s what I’ve heard too. It makes sense to give them “one movie each” like that, since the sequel trilogy isn’t mainly about them. If the three of them had big roles in the same movie there would be a lot less room to develop the new main characters. It’s very sad that we won’t get to see what Ep 9 had in store for her.

But that doesn’t fit into the “Star Wars sucks because of Kathleen Kennedy” narrative.

If you prove them wrong they just revert back to the “Star Wars sucks because of Rian Johnson” narrative which is a part of the larger “Star Wars just plain sucks” narrative so there’s not much to gain here.

I’ll post here too (I posted this in the TLJ edit ideas thread).

I made a Yoda edit test video in After Effects:
https://vimeo.com/258530054

password: yoda

Fixed face, enhanced mouth movements, ghost glow.

I strongly approve of this. However, I wonder how it would look with the mouth contortions applied at about 50%.

Yep, I think 50% would be better. I exaggerated it a bit to make the effect more noticeable.

The shrinking of the sides of Yoda’s mouth has always looked odd to me, even when Ady did it in ESB:R. But it is a bit more lifelike, so it’s a tradeoff.

Another thing that might make him more like the ESB puppet would be to reduce the highlights in the eyes.

The mouth movements may need to be a little more subtle. I don’t mind the highlights myself, but it could be worth a try.

Holy moly. That’s amazing. His movements look a bit robotic though, more so than in ESB I think, but not sure if that’s fixable. Amazing work Ridley, really. But I think both the mouth and the eyes can be improved even more.

Thank you! I don’t think I’ll do anything about his movements other than the mouth, anyway. I didn’t want to spend too much time on this test but once I do it for real I’ll fine tune everything further and probably add some blinks and such.

Moon (2009)

A really enjoyable, interesting, and realistic science fiction film. A masterpiece? No. But a really great directorial debut. I’m definitely going to try and seek out what Duncan Jones has done since.

It pains to me to say this, but… um… maybe don’t? Or at least don’t get your expectations too high.

Moon is great, Source Code is pretty good, Warcraft is meh and I haven’t seen Mute but I see a pattern here.

I hope everyone will stop saying “Breath of the Wild has no music” now.
The soundtrack is five discs.
And I want it.

Yes, BOTW does have music, but most of it is not catchy or at all memorable.

That’s totally false.

No it’s not. I assert that the most memorable music is that from the five villages, the castle, the title theme (in the trailer), and music played by Kass. That is, the non-atmospheric score. The atmospheric music might still aid to set a mood, and it might also be very good for what it is, but it is not catchy or memorable in its own right.

Some other tracks I find memorable/catchy:

  • Guardian battle
  • Hinox battle
  • Molduga battle
  • Lynel battle
  • Boss battles
  • Test of strength/shrine battle
  • Korok forest
  • Dragon
  • Stable
  • Shrine
  • Tarrey town
  • Lost woods
  • Abandoned North Mine
  • Riding (day/night)
  • Parasailing minigame
  • Shieldsurfing minigame

What I’m saying is the argument for wanting more non-atmospheric music in the game is not invalid. Yes, it’s just different but I miss it. I find myself hanging around Hyrule Castle and Rito Village slot because I enjoy listening to the music so much.

You make a huge assumption by saying that people would get bored with overworld themes. If the problem is that almost the whole game is on the overworld, there could then be different themes for different regions. (Which is also basically the case in other games.) It doesn’t have to be just one Hyrule Field track for the whole map.

And besides that, the overworld in other Zelda games is not just the in-between place from a to b. Maybe just Hyrule/Termina Field is in Ocarina of Time or Majora’s Mask, but in most games there’s more to the overworld than a to b.

I guess I made some generalizations that didn’t work for you. I agree with the points you make. But my point is that I personally appreciate that the game isn’t always playing a clear theme. There’s a lot of breathing room in the soundtrack which makes it a very relaxing experience in general, I like that. I also love how older Zelda games use music, but I appreciate that they tried something new.
