Going by the counter at the bottom of the main page, this is the twelve thousandth topic posted to OT.com
Here's to 12,000 more!
Is it possible it came out under a different title in Japan?
I think he means the days of 4:3 open matte transfers of widescreen movies are pretty much over now that 16:9 is the standard.
There is the possibility BTTF might play on one of the retro SD digital subchannels out there now. They are all broadcast in 4:3. Just when I thought I'd never see a pan and scan version of Lawrence of Arabia ever again!
Plenty of time to be douchey or not douchey in the second and third film. ;)
Thorin does have a nice little emotional arc in this one though...
With so few theaters being equipped for this at the moment, it's going to be difficult to go to another venue and see if there is a difference.
It would have to completely cover the CGI, as a complete version of the untouched footage was never released. Even if you had a print of the Star Wars to Jedi doc, it only had a few seconds of Human Jabba.
Odd there isn't a LDDB listing for it.

KTLA in Los Angeles is showing the 1983 Rose Parade right now. Thought I was in a time warp for second there!
I can't wait for the sequel to The Empire Strikes Back!
Will they rescue Han? Will Luke go to the dark side?
It's going to be amazing!
I'm not so crazy about the title. Since when do Jedi seek revenge? ;)
Holy Crap! Only a few months before the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi!

IIRC, it's mostly the same dialog that was in the original script, which also made it into the comic and novelization.
I firmly believe Jabba is out of his gourd on some controlled substance in ROTJ, which might explain the difference in attitude. ;)
The Criterion Bond commentaries vary in audio quality quite a bit. Some participants sound like they were recorded over the phone, and others sound like vintage interviews repurposed. A couple passages sound like they were recorded outdoors, or in someone's home complete with background noises.
Of course, this was back when they were the only one's doing it, and it was less likely they were going to get everyone in a nice audio booth to sit down and watch the film.
As there's no CX noise reduction, there's also going to be background hiss.
They might have cheated Jabba's size to better fit him into the 1976 footage. After all, Harrison didn't know he was interacting with a giant slug at the time time. ;)
You'd think Ben Burtt would have had a box full of unused voice tracks for Jabba from 1983 they could have remixed into new dialog.
Given that a good chunk of the fleet got wiped out over Vulcan, a "battlefield promotion" makes sense. (The Klingons or the Romulans might decide it's a good time to make trouble.) Captain Pike certainly needed time to recover from his injuries.
I'm not sure if Kirk being the youngest Captain in Starfleet was canon or not, but some of the stories and comics I read as a kid implied it.
The commentary is on the analog track, so no bits involved. ;)
Kirk often had to deal with the personal toll of sitting in the big chair. The "Court Martial" episode touched upon an undercurrent of jealousy and resentment of Kirk making Captain at his age. (Most of the other captains we saw on the series were older.) I think this movie is going to get into that.

All I know is he was incredibly annoying kiss-ass to listen to in the prequel special features and commentaries.
I found Joe Letteri defending the dried banana turd CGI Jabba much more annoying personally.
JOE LETTERI: We wanted people to think there was a giant banana turd on set with Harrison Ford and we just photographed him stepping in it.
Yeah, that was pretty egregious.
I think you guys are forgetting that, in 1996, to insert CG like that into unseen 1976 footage was pretty impressive, and looked real(-ish) to us. Almost no one was bashing the CG quality of Jabba in 1997; it hasn't aged well, in the same way that all CG from 1997 hasn't, nor have many early 3D video games like 1996's Resident Evil (one of my favourite games of all time that I routinely play every so often). But for the time, it was for sure a proud moment in ILM history.
It was amazing that they could put Jabba into that footage. Problem is, it looks nothing like the Jabba we saw in ROTJ. The revised version was an improvement, but the skin color still seems off, unlike the TPM Jabba.
They should have at least considered building a scaled down Jabba puppet and inserted that into the sequence. That approach would not be far removed from what George has claimed he was going to do with those shots originally.
Really surprised at some of the negative, borderline hostile reactions I'm reading elsewhere.
I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with my eyesight. ;)
Starting to wonder if all the venues showing this are of equal quality in presentation. The theater I saw The Hobbit at is brand new, having opened last month.
I won't rule out getting the Brosnans. I want to watch the recent discs I've bought beofre I even think about getting anything else. (If that other parcel ever gets here!)
I don't have the TWINE SE yet. I think DAD has Dolby EX, I've only listened to the DTS ES track though. I'm not sure these things are always properly flagged, as Attack of the Clones is supposed to be EX and it only says Dolby Digital on my amp's display.
Very surprised to see Dr. No airing on a local L.A. station today.
The revival cinema near me is getting FRWL in February. I might have to go see that. :)
Always easier on a film's budget to travel back to the time you're actually in than recreate a bygone era. And now, even the "Nuclear Wessel" Enterprise is passing into history.
TFF had it's heart in the right place. Studio meddling was the real villain here. And Paramount still won't give Shatner a chance to rework it and finish some FX. Maybe for Trek's 50th anniversary?
The evil energy being who wants to inhabit the Enterprise to carry it away from it's "prison", is a complete lift of the animated Trek episode "Beyond the Farthest Star" though.
I meant the two hour final episode of TNG, smarty pants! ;)
I always thought "All Good Things" would have made a great movie. As some remastered TNG episodes have been getting theatrical screenings, maybe I'll get my wish.
There's a Japanese LD of the animated Flash Gordon movie?
