Inconsistencies, retcons, and other problems between the PT and OT or within the PT

It's been speculated Vader prevents Boba from shooting Chewie in ESB because Threepio is on his back, but that's a stretch. A Dark Horse comic does have Vader recognize him, and he gives the order to have the blasted droid put in the cell with Chewie.

I have wondered if Artoo can see Obi Wan's ghost...

Vader is ok with killing younglings, a planet full of people, his old besty Ben and his own son (the last remaining remnant of padme) but he's sympathetic to a droid that he left without hesitation as a kid?? I dunno...

Well, he did get him back in Episode II. ;)

There is an interesting passage in the novel where Vader reflects on the destruction of Alderaan. It almost borders on regret, until he reminds himself the planet also had traitors to the Empire living on it. Whether Alan Dean Foster invented that internal conflict, or got it from Lucas is a mystery.

Starlog Magazine at archive.org

If only Starburst and Fangoria were on line too.

Fangoria might be dicey, as that's still published. Fango and Starlog were sister publications, but the current owners haven't done anything with Starlog since it folded. Even the website is dead. Not sure what gray legal areas this may go into, so grab what you can.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starlog

I wouldn't mind seeing some of Starlog's short lived competitors show up on that site. Fantastic Films was also a pretty good magazine, with some creative pre release speculation on ROTJ back in the day.

Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971
Time

The 80's VHS releases are more likely to have the modified titles. Going to try for some of the full frame LD's if I can get them cheap enough.

I found the Binder interview on Archive.org of all places. Someone typed out an entire issue of Starlog by hand???

http://archive.org/stream/starlog_magazine-074/074_djvu.txt

Here's the relevant passage...

"The Bond films started with a normal sized screen," Binder remembers, less emotional now that he is past the personal horrors of un-skilled mechanics tinkering with his work.

"With Thunderball, we went to Cinemascope. Then with Live and Let Die, they went back to the small-size screen. Now, I didn't have to worry about the proportions of Live and Let Die or The Man With The Golden Gun - or what some TV lab technician might do to them. The screen ratio fits on television."

"But! With The Spy Who Loved Me, we returned to Cinemascope and we had trouble. So, now, I do a tv or Home Box Office version -whatever you want to call it - for each title. That means keeping the same design, but redesigning the proportions and the format so it fits. When you see it on TV, it looks like the same title, but it isn't. I know what I'm cutting off, and, I know if I left it to some add at the lab to do the damn TV thing - on For Your Eyes Only, for example -he would have cut out Sheena Easton on one side, or the behind of the girl dancing on the other side of the screen."

OMG! They have entire issues scanned in you can go page by page through! This could be a valuable resource around here!

Some ebay horrors...

Not quite a creepy puppet Yoda head, but there's something disquieting about it...

It looks a lot like they somehow enlarged a pez dispenser head sculpt!

And some Gungan nightmare fuel for you tonight. ;)

"What's it really about?" Subtle themes in films.
Time

The Thing seems like it would have been a little early to be making any commentary on the AIDS crisis in 1982. I think John Carpenter would have fessed up to such a thing by now. It's no secret what "They Live" is all about.

The blood test scene is in the original novella, which was written in 1938.

The POTA films don't take a heck of a lot from the original novel, aside from Apes subjugating humans, and IIRC, doesn't even take place on Earth. The second movie does seem to be commenting on the peace vs. war issues of the 60's. The fourth one could be a allegory for the racial tensions of the era.

Such analysis has merit, but in the case of The Shining, it's gone into very strange territory. I doubt even Kubrick thought of running two prints in opposite directions projected as one image to conceal hidden meanings.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - uncensored HDTV airing(s) (Released)

Is there a reason Oswald would have been altered at the time? If Universal owned him at the time, it shouldn't have been a problem having him in the movie. Woody Woodpecker made it in.

As there's been a 16mm print or two on Ebay, and possibly a Derann Super 8 in the past, how hard would it be to scan the frames in question (if the prints are uncensored) and integrate them into an HD version?

30 years: Your Memories of Waiting for ROTJ
Time

I recall the Ewoks' appearance being spoiled on tv. (Can't remember if it was local or network.) This was after months of major secrecy. Kenner had blacked out their pictures in the toy catalogs, even the cardbacks, and IIRC, photography was not allowed in their toy fair booth that year.

Some ROTJ puzzles, (not by Kenner) hit store shelves ahead of the film, and a news report on the pre release mania flashed a picture of Artoo and Wicket that was on the box. Damn you mainstream media! ;)

On the flip side of the coin, none of the other aliens really were kept secret, except for Jabba. (Admiral Ackbar was the mail away "preview" figure much like Boba Fett was before ESB.) Boushh was listed as a bounty hunter, but the true identity was preserved until after the movie was out.

Thanks for the Boop detective work, guys! I've been saying for years there was no evidence that this ever existed, and now you've found it!

The scene with Baby Herman smoking in the baby carriage appears to be unaltered. There are some reports that the scene was altered but I haven't found any proof.

You (or those reporting it) might've been misled by the fact that the scene was altered during a later stage of editing the film....before release. When Sotheby's auctioned off a bunch of cels from the film, one of them showed Baby Herman inserting a bill or two into his assistant's cleavage (remember, he was sending her off to bet on a horse for him). In the final film, this shot is replaced by a closeup of Eddie.

There were a few late changes like this, toning down some of the adult elements. ADR of Wise Ass saying "bull schtick" instead of the other word, and Maroon telling Eddie he has a lot of "brass" instead of balls.

...but, again, these were pre-release "changes", if that is even the right word.

There was a Starlog article that showed that Baby Herman shot. (And it looked like a completed sequence.) And someone has thoughtfully posted it online!

A New direction for Lucasfilm Animation
Time

The first CW movie didn't light the box office on fire, and it would be foolhardy to have anything theatrical between now and the sequel's release. (With the possible exception of the OT.) They already put the 3D releases on hold.

I'm betting Detours gets a one shot airing, and goes straight to DVD like the Lego specials. It may become the Holiday Special of the new generation. ;)

A New direction for Lucasfilm Animation
Time

Five years is a good run for any animated show, especially these days. I can't imagine the episodes still in the pipeline aren't going to air at some point. More than enough for syndication now.

Unless Ashoka went out in a blaze of glory, dying for a noble cause, no way were they going to kill her off. I've suspected for a long time they could have her simply missing in action, leaving open the door for her return in future projects. I'd like to see a Star Wars angle on marooned soldiers who don't know the war is long over.

Did the Sat AM timeslot hurt the ratings any last season? I thought they should have kept the Friday evening slot for reruns.

Detours should be put out of our misery though. ;)

Robot Chicken and MAD do more than enough spoofs, and are actually funny to boot.

Not to throw water on the idea, but I'm babysitting two such prints, plus a third that is the 1977 version.

All are on reels too big to fit on the gear Puggo uses.

Silverwook is it not possible to transfer them to different sized reels? I would presume this would mean cutting them maybe? Forgive me if this a dumb question, the fact you have an original 77 version makes me weak at the knees, have you been able to watch them? have you any screen shots?

I don't trust the projector I have to safely play them. It can take a 1200 reel, but it struggles with a 600 reel. I'm aching to watch it and find out if it's the true mono mix or not.

I don't have the gear to downsize the reels.

There are screenshots in the original auction. Alas, the youtube video is no longer there. It was beautiful.

I went way over what I could afford, but I nabbed it in the end. Hopefully it will be worth it - feeding your kids is over-rated anyway.

Silverwook, I know the seller that print originally came from, so at least I had some idea of its quality and heritage so to speak, but yeah, I went way over budget.

Glad to hear you had some inside info. It would have gone for a lot more had there been pictures.
