I want to believe they know which version they're getting, but this is so sudden, and out of the blue. Some people only know the 1997 SE, (because that's all they've ever been able to see) and honest people do make honest mistakes.

The Eastman House touted they were getting an uncut print of The Shining for Halloween a few years back, famous deleted ending and all. In the end that wasn't what they actually had, it was simply the longer U.S. version.

J.J.'s approach seems to be about using the right type of effect for what a scene requires. CGI is just one item in the toolbox.

One of my television production instructors had a simple theory. A bad/mediocre pilot means a great tv series will follow. And the opposite is also true. Not sure how well it holds up in the real world though. ;)

Some Amazon reviews harped on the editing features, but I don't need those. LD's never had any sort of copy protection, so I don't anticipate any problems.

Once I have a capture, how do I determine it's accuracy to the source? Is bit perfect even something the human ear can tell?

 

There are two aspects to test for when wanting to achieve bit perfection. One, is the digital audio signal being altered/processed in some way by either the LD player or the CD recorder? Two, is your LD player doing a perfect playback of the digital audio track?

To test for #1, your LD player will need to be able to play CDs. Play a track from a CD in your LD player and record it with the CD recorder. Then extract that track from the CD-R using EAC or XLD (CD rippers). Then, take the original CD you were playing in the LD player and rip the same track using EAC or XLD. Now do a cancellation comparison on the two files. You may need to edit some samples to get both tracks into perfect alignment. If they match, your setup is playing and recording the unaltered digital audio track. If they don't match, depending on what audio is left behind in the cancellation process, we might be able to determine what type of alteration is being made. But you would most likely need to repeat the test with another LD or CD player to try and determine  which device is altering the signal.

To test for #2, you'll need to record everything twice and do a cancellation comparison. Any place that does not cancel out to pure digital silence, you did not get bit perfection. I'm running into this problem with my setup. So far, 4 of my LDs have recorded perfectly and match 100%, while two are giving me issues. At times, the difference is only an isolated sample here and there. Other places it's a section of many samples not matching up. Sometimes this isn't heard, other times I can hear light ticks. The LDs look totally clean and have no evidence of rot in the video, so I suspect my player is a bit weak at accurately playing digital tracks on certain discs. I don't have another player to try, which could possibly confirm if the problem is with the discs.

It's sad what happened to the MGM backlot, but it was the real star of a spooky tv movie from 1974, The Phantom of Hollywood, before it's total demolition.

My local UHF station dug up Space Angel in the wake of Star Wars. It aired back to back with Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers, and those superimposed real mouths still haunt my dreams!

There is good and bad animation in any medium. I liked how that short on The Incredibles poked fun at Clutch Cargo's Syncro-Vox style.

As with MGM, somebody lacked the vision to see what a tourist goldmine the old backlot could have been.

Not sure the cheap and easy applies to feature films. Pixar and Dreamworks employ small armies, and the budgets often rival live action projects. And it still takes a few years to actually make one.

There are CGI animated movies that have been done cheap, (and sometimes nasty looking) but not by the big boys.

Has any budget for VII been mentioned or speculated at yet?

The problem with CGI is it's all starting to look the same. Could you tell Disney from Pixar at this point, without the logo at the beginning? Ironically, The Clone Wars carved out a unique style, and got criticized for it.

Television seems to be the only place 2D is thriving.

It's ridiculous they cut the footage instead of blurring out the number. Music videos and reality shows have blurred stuff out for decades, so it's hardly an expensive thing to do.

And please, don't actually call that number. ;)

It would be interesting if there was a lot of space pirates around in the wake of the Empire's fall. Han was sometimes referred to as a space pirate in the early days, but it's not really what Solo does.

I imagine a similar reaction ensued when the makers of Die Hard found their Nakatomi Plaza.

There's no such thing as bad publicity though. The hotel used for the location shots in The Shining, and the one the interior sets were modeled on have both warmly embraced their connection to the film. ;)

There are probably medical reasons for him to be getting up and around as soon as possible, but yeah, he's inspiring.

Between this and the surgery Peter Mayhew had to endure to get walking again, I hope the cast has suffered enough to appease the movie gods.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the LD is the best bet short of a film print showing up.

Just out of curiosity, how many seconds of footage were cut? Was the movie shot open matte? Is there a possible PAL DVD release overseas that isn't cut?

The only LD release was in 1985, and it's analog sound sound only, with no CX noise reduction. A Beta Hi-Fi might sound better.
