The soccer ball droid doesn't bother me, either.  However, they've officially shown R2 in at least three difference instances.  Makes me wonder if he's going to have a larger than supporting role.  I guess it's to be assumed C3PO and R2 are still with one of the OT characters, but who knows after 30 years.

Lucas has said since the early days that Artoo and Threepio were intended to be in all the trilogies. One of the few things he actually hasn't contradicted or backpedaled himself on later.

That doesn't mean Anakin building Threepio was part of the plan all along of course. ;)

I think so. Is it because you thought the rest sucked, or because you really liked the droid? I liked that the droid really felt like it belonged in Star Wars, even if was a little weird. But since I like originality, I can't complain. The droid looks like it has an efficient design, assuming the technology is available to make its head stay on easily.

It's just hard to imagine what sort of tasks are suited to such an unusual looking droid. And some of us still have the lingering hangover of silly droids in the prequels, and the SE's. Not to mention Artoo flying, and being all CGI in shots that could have been done with the real prop.

I want to see more of Happy Fun Ball in action first. Might even be a minor character that ultimately proves the classic Astromech design is still the best. ;)

And TIE Interceptors are way cooler! I hope we see more fighters like that, and a greater variety, or at least more advanced TIEs. TIEs don't seem to have a particularly great design. It's easy to shoot them down with such huge wings. One would expect them to be slimmed down a little in later models, which is why I'm hoping they're either old, or they're new in a way I couldn't see in that quick shot.

It's been speculated over the years that TIE's are pretty much flying cannon fodder. Cheap, and easy to produce in massive numbers to overwhelm an enemy. They don't even have ejection seats. And unlike X-Wings, they can't operate far from a base or mother ship.

Did any of the later releases keep the restored footage that hadn't been seen in decades since the original broadcasts? I thought I read a review that complained about that several years ago, but can't find it now.

Rudolph was released on Laserdisc, so that might be a better audio source. It's probably the same as the really old VHS I once had, unrestored, and the altered version most of us grew up watching.

The TIE Fighters look too similar to what we saw in the OT, but I can't say I got a very good look at them. Hopefully these aren't new fighters they're still making the same way as 30 years ago.

Because nobody would ever still be flying a 40 year old design...

Or a 60 year old one. ;)

Those are old planes, though, right? Not new planes copying old designs? I'm just hoping that they're either improved, or old TIEs. Perhaps the Empire is in the position the Rebels were in the OT and are stuck using old ships. I just don't want the designs faithfully copied for nostalgia's sake when they're supposed to be new. I want them to be updated like those X-Wings, or be old like the original X-Wings were supposed to be.

The point I'm trying to make is that the TIE is a successful design. Like a B-1 or a B-52, you can upgrade the electronics in the cockpit, and even the engines, and it's probably going to look pretty much the same on the outside.

It's also possible the tables have turned enough that what's left of the Empire is the side having to keep old ships going now. They probably have more spare parts handy than the Rebellion did though.

EU notwithstanding, we don't know the circumstances of Plagueis' death. And Palpatine could have been lying his ass off to Anakin anyway. It's a little convenient to dangle the carrot of learning how cheat death in front of him just as he's starting to have visions of Padme dying.

Going by the lightsaber, I think it's someone much older, who has just woken up, and/or someone who was too far away from the action in the previous films to be detected using the Force.

This page has some very hi-res images from the trailer...

Plus a super detailed iMAX shot of the Falcon that would make a nice wallpaper.

I recognize one of the commenters from elsewhere. Some people really get around!
