I recall the controversy. Remember this was pre internet, and it was possible for someone’s criminal record to be hushed up. IIRC, some actors in the film were on record as having not a clue about the director’s history. People higher up in the studio food chain probably did know their criminal history.

And they did do prison time for their crimes. Roman Polanski has never answered for the things he’s accused of doing and many in the industry have worked with him since.

My boss just purchased a $25k 3D Systems Figure 4 Printer so that we can help make PPE, swabs, and valve splitters for ventilators for our local hospitals in New Mexico. I’ve been asked to run the tool and I’m looking forward to this, I’ve no idea how to design stuff but from my research I should be able to run it. These are scary times and I’m really proud that my boss has stepped up in this manner as well as providing free meals via Subway to first responders. I hope that you are all well and May the Force be with us all!

I’ve been watching other new 4K HDR transfers of classic movies on Disney+ and almost all of them look infinitely better than the original trilogy. For a movie shot on film, it’s depressing how the 4K version of the original Santa Claus movie with Tim Allen has better use of HDR and left more grain in tact than these transfers of the original trilogy. A silly 90’s family comedy has a better transfer than these legendary movies??? What the heck?

Manos: Hands of Fate has a better transfer than Star Wars.

A cropped upscale of an ancient 4:3 broadcast tape isn’t going to look so hot in HD either. I’ve been sampling the local nostalgia tv subchannels and it’s a mixed bag of 4:3, horribly cropped to 16:9, and even stranger slightly stretched out at the sides making a 1:66(?) image lightly windowboxed at the sides, which seems to defeat the purpose of appeasing viewers who hate black bars in the first place. Not sure if any of this are “new” syndication masters or being somehow done on the fly.
Shows shot on SD broadcast tape look really bad blown up even in SD, which most of these digital subchannels are. Night Court looked like a bootleg tape to me.

I wonder if Disney would foot the bill for proper Simpsons remaster of the older SD episodes? Would all the film still be stored somewhere?

It’s not weird, it’s just lazy. The Simpsons is cropped because that’s what Fox did for the HD version, and they’re too lazy to use anything else. Splash covers up the nudity because that’s the censored for TV version, and they just thought they might as well go with that.

As the occasional sight gag has been obliterated by the cropping, I can only presume it was supervised by Mr. Magoo.
Uncropped Simpsons reruns are still airing on a local L.A. station.

Flash Gordon Rumor - now a 'general discussion' thread for Flash Gordon

Unfortunately I don’t think there has been a fan edit for the 1980 version of Flash Gordon (here or elsewhere) - though I hope to be wrong on that.

I’ll have to check the fanedit forum some time, maybe there will be something there.

I used to admire the costume design of the 1980 film a great deal, until I watched the documentary about Jodorowksy’s Dune (brilliant documentary by the way). Towards the end of the documentary there is a series of comparisons of original designs for the unrealised Dune project and the films that followed in its wake. It makes for rather depressing viewing.

That said, Ming’s palace guards (the ‘pig guards’ and ‘football players’) and the secret police costumes in particular are fantastic.

George Lucas developed Star Wars because he could not obtain the Flash Gordon rights. I wonder if his version would have been anything like as colourful, had he made it.

That’s a good question! Would he have kept it in a 1930’s/40’s milieu like the Filmation animated version did?

If they erased Daryl Hanna’s butt, what did they do the subtitled line John Candy says in Swedish to fake out the security guard? Arguably the biggest laugh in the movie.

And what does Ron Howard think of Disney messing with his movie? You don’t want to mess with Opie…

This is probably the dumbest case of censoring prudishness since ABC snipped Raiders for it’s network premiere, so you couldn’t see the butts of the Hovitos chasing Indy. All the skewered corpses and melting/exploding heads were intact of course.

Not necessarily ready to go back to work… But I’m certainly ready to turn the money faucet back on.
Anybody need a haircut?

Do you do home visits? I’m in all day mate;) At the start of the lockdown I had the ‘Donald Sutherland as Oddball from Kelly’s Heroes’ look - now it it is a maze-like multi-dimensionable ball of hair - would like a short back and sides!

Will tip, provide quality music and booze (am not sure as to the quality of the booze) 😉

Weird you should mention that. I dreamt we were hanging out together a couple weeks ago, and you looked exactly like Oddball. Why we were partying in what looked like a bombed out brick factory I have no idea. 😉
