How big was Star Wars in the 70s 80s and 90s

I think the quote from Mark Hamill was “Good God, they’ve put me on steroids!” but here it’s “Me? I wish!” http://www.starwars.com/news/force-throwback-the-first-modern-star-wars-action-figures

I don’t remember the sabers being this long, but the extra blasters were way too big and the plastic was always bent.

It was something Kenner corrected early on, making the long saber variants more valuable to collectors.

Pity we never got a buff Porkins. 😉

Someone was able to get the character names off those Lego sets.

Han Solo (Imperial Disquise) & Tobias Beckett (Imperial Disquise)

This could end up being a funny little nod to ANH. Was it ever established who’s idea it was to disguise themselves as stormtroopers? I always got the idea that it was Han’s idea.

Also, wasn’t Rey originally supposed to be called Kira? I guess Qi-Ra (Emilia Clarke’s character) is meant to be a nod to that.

Kind of glad they changed her name, because this is what I think of first when I hear Kira

And this comes to mind second…

Is Han’s short career as an Imperial officer is still canon?

Don’t forget Kenner brought back the toys in 1995, a full two years before the SE’s. Sure, Luke and the gang looked like they’d been hanging out on Eternia, but damn it was good to see Star Wars toys on the shelves again!
We also had the stuffed to the gills soundtrack anthology, and the (not so) Definitive Collection Laserdisc box set in 1993. I don’t think there ever was a time that the OT was out of print on home video in the 80’s or 90’s.

I’d say 91-95 was a fun, ‘pure’ time for those reasons - Zahn, new Kenner Eternia figures, soundtrack CDs, VHS sets…

Don’t forget the birth of LucasArts games, 90s was its prime.

Wasn’t that just a name change for Lucasfilm Games, founded in 1982? 😉

I’d love to see modern versions of ballblaxzer and Rescue On Fractalus.

I can’t say for the 70s and early 80s, but during the late 80s and until 97, Star Wars was just… there. Three highly regarded films that people loved, but that’s about it.

I would even say that Star Wars kinda stagnated in the 90s. There were video games and novels, but they were really only for fans.

The Special Editions pumped life into it and then the prequels ignited the super franchise fire that we have today.

I also think that because people who grew up on the films are now adults has a lot to do with the superfandom it has today. They’re buying tickets and making their kids watch these movies who want to buy toys and dress up for Halloween…rince, repeat.

Why is it so hard to discuss the legitimate question of Rey’s abilities without using an offensive term to do it?

Because there’s nothing inherently offensive about it! I’m sorry, Frink, but I really strongly disagree on this one.

Given how many times these threads fly off the rails into a an oil tanker conveniently parked nearby when it’s used, you could have fooled me. It’s just has way too much baggage attached to it now. We’re simply better off without using it.

And as Jay said in another thread recently…

Please respect the OP and keep personal attacks and politics out of this thread. The whole “Mary Sue” argument in regards to Rey has been beaten to death.

Warnings have been issued.

Star Wars at box office

Wasn’t Jumanji one of those films that made more moolah on home video, like Austin Powers? The original had enough clout Sony hyped Zathura in 2005 as a sort of sequel, which it wasn’t really.

You also can’t discount people who saw the original film as kids and are taking their families to see this one. Not much else in family fare out right now. Coco has been out for over a month, and nobody apparently cares about Ferdinand as it’s not Pixar or Disney.

The Shining - 35mm print opportunity (a WIP)

Any progress on the project?

It is being worked on, although slowly as there’s a lot of color correction to deal with. There were some issues with a certain Mr. Grady, who has a very different concept of what correction means, but he too has been corrected. 😉

There might be a work in progress grindhouse version before spring. Cross your fingers!

I recently saw the documentary, Room 237, (about people with their, shall we say, creative theories about Kubrick’s hidden messages in the film) and the tennis ball shot is a proper yellow! Wonder what the actual source was they used for this?

I watched this documentary last night… Yeah a bit of whacky fun. The moon landing conspiracy theory was my favorite one but i don’t really believe it had any factual evidence.

I think what can be inferred is that there is a personal message in there and what it is who knows? But the people and their theories all agree on there is more to it than you think and I also agree with that. But i am not sure i believe any of the theories even though they were quite interesting from genocide of Native american indians, greek mythology, Nazis and the holocaust and faked moon landings it was bizarre but also made me feel normal 😃

The orientation maps were cool i digged that too!

Were you ready to take an axe and chase the guy with the constant creepy little laugh within the first five minutes he was on? 😉
