THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

There were ps3 avchd versions of the prequels uploaded to a.b.starwars many moons ago (not by adywan), but have since gone by the wayside and are no longer downloadable by the premium services (I have giganews and they go back about 250 days (and counting), but I can't d/l these anymore there).  Any chance of someone re-upping them?

Ady's ANH and ESB are fantastic, and I can certainly wait a bit more for his RoTJ fixes, but it would be nice to see the prequels as well.  I guess I should have downloaded them when I had a chance, but I waited a little too long.

If anyone's able to help, please post or pm me.  Thanks!

Well you never see or you dont want to see Vader to travel to one point to another. Besides we see Vader in places never to walk all the time from one point to another. Also the tunnel matte taken from ROTS.

Two words: Jedi Teleportation. :)

Or maybe clones.  Maybe there's a whole slew of Vaders running around, but everyone thinks they're the same guy.  Ohhhh....I've just got an idea for Eps VII - IX! :rolls eyes:

The more I think about the Great Vader's Isolation Chamber Debate™ :) the more I'm liking the idea of an elevator entrance a'la the Emperor's throne room in ROTJ.  It isolates the room and doesn't make it implausible that Vader is running all over the ship since we have no idea where the chamber may be located.  And it also ties more design elements together between the Star Destroyer and Death Star.

I also like Monroville's idea of decreasing the ambient lighting.  Maybe pushing the elevator back a little and having the room dimly lit until Vader's reveal would give it a greater scope, rather than having the chamber so close to the entrance.

In order to get a sense of isolation, all that needs be done would be to remove the extra officers and insert a different matte background.  The actual stairs and hallway need not be changed.  As is it looks almost like a small hallway between rooms, so why in the hell are three officers just standing around?  Regardless, I'm not bothered by the existing shot.  If any changes are done, it may be easiest just to isolate Piett and replace the entirety of the background.

My shot-by-shot impressions:

1) The closer proximety of the SD makes sense, along with the "blockade" and the blue hue to the engines.

2) This is my most anticipated scene from ESB:R!  New asteroid elements, along with firing TIEs = tasty!

3) Color correction not withstanding, the recomposited AT-ATs in the rear look great.  And I certainly don't mind the red windshield removal.

4) A good update to one of the SE's biggest FX blunders.

5) Bespin not in a gloomy haze?  New background elements and sunlight!  Awesomeness indeed.

6) ditto.

7) New macros give a more modern look.  Not nesessary, but a nice touch.

8) Aside from the officers being further apart, I love this shot!  Pretty much new elements all around and it works!  And Hoth's perspective in the first window has been fixed.

9) Nice grey bridge with visible stars

10) good matte enhancement and the sabers aren't blooming!

11) nuff said about his one. it's perfect!

12) more lightsaber tweaking goodness

13) window restoration!  Now consistency's afoot!

14) again grey interiors, with more continuity changes.  Excellent!

15) good clean trench background.  nice and bright!

16) I can't wait to see this one in motion!

Bring on the trailer!

I've been geeked up over this since the last preview and have a couple requests:

Could someone provide the link to the ESB:R clip archive?  The member's name escapes me at this moment (005, maybe?), but someone was keeping an online database of all the clips to this point.  I only have a couple of them and have turned a few more friends onto the project and they'd like to see the previous clips as well.  Ady's got a number of them linked in his first post, but I know there's more.  Plus, the "Revisited Repository" (that should be trademarked :) ) had the dates attached to each clip, which is very nice, too!

Also, I would like to request a split-screen of the Ion cannon shot again.  This is something I would like to do myself, but I'm running an ailing 2.4 GHz Pentium II with a scant 512 MB of RAM and my machine would certainly not like that.  Now in a couple weeks, it may be a different story (c'mon Dell!)....

And put me down for not knowing what the hell I'm looking for in that SD gif, too! :)

Anyone (not necessarily Ady if he's too busy) want to upload a top/bottom comparison vid of the new shot and the DVD?  There's been a LOT of improvements and it would be great to see them side-by-side.

I didn't even notice the X-wing getting blown up the first time around, nor did I notice the bridge windows being extended.  It just felt right from start to finish.  The attention to detail and continuity is so very, very nice to behold.  Good stuff. :)

I must say I agree with what Gorilla said, the idea of windows instead of balconies is interesting. And what's more I always found the rotoscoping of the characters quite ugly in this shot, but yet again the decision's all yours Ady :)

Well, the corridors in Bespin do wind quite a bit.  My thoughts are they round a corner and are on a balcony.  After this shot, they go down another winding corridor that masks the opening to the balcony in the background, hence no remaining visual cues of being outside.  Rationalization to be sure, but logically, it works.

I don't know how Amazon.com is about shipping internationally, but I've ordered quite a bit from amazon.co.uk and they do indeed ship to the US.  My last order took four days to get over the pond and to the midwest!  And that was with standard shipping! :)

I would also assume amazon.com would have no way of adding VAT to your order, so you may save that way, too.

Silly quibble, but since stalagmites and tites are formed by water dripping, an asterioid with no liquid water or gravity wouldn't have any.

I always liked the space slug. I don't think it needs any tweaking.

"There's an awful lot of moisture in here."

Not to mention, Han et al can walk around freely, so there's certainly gravity as well. :)

I don't mind the slug as is, however, I always balked at "the cave's collapsing" line since it looks so obviously like teeth.  If the slug just waits for something to land in it to eat, I think the entrance would appear more cave-like than like rows of teeth.  That being said, perhaps the teeth are hidden within the wall until the slug senses the Falcon's attempt at escape and then starts to close to trap it inside.  But what're you gonna do?

Wow, ANHR has the great flipper debate and so far ESBR has had the great green laser debate, the great blue/grey TIE fighter debate, the great expand the carbon freeze chamber debate, the great change the slug debate, and the great get rid of that damn snowflake on Chewy's foot debate!  And we're still quite a way off from its release!

And here is more unused music in the lightsaber duel. After he escapes the carbon chamber, when they're sabers clash, that's when I stop liking it. Then it gets cool again when Luke jumps over Darth Vader. So maybe just use parts of this score here.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qWWsX3tj5i0

Here's this scene with the sound effects and vocal track as well as the music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3zuGTFh6Lw&feature=related

I've never listened to the tracks re-incorporated into the film and some of it sounds quite nice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP38NAnmxUU&feature=related), while some seems out of place (the duel - after Luke escapes the chamber, the music seems a little too powerful/dramatic and it overpowers everything else in the scene).  Of course, this is after watching a not-so-properly leveled track off youtube.  A better mixed DVD quality version may give a different impression.

A second track with most of it back in would be nice to hear on the final disc, but may not be necessary.  I'm sure once the final sound mix is being worked on, Ady will make the right choice at the time.  Some tracks really do fit well (the Imperial March while the TIE bombers are doing their thing to the large asteroid for example).

In the end, for those of us who have watched this film so many times, anything done differently to the final mix will seem off, since we're not used to it.  I never had a problem with the music as is, so any non-additions won't bother me, but I do believe certain portions of the unused tracks do enhance some of the scenes.

The only time trailers have music from elsewhere in them is the early ones before the film has a proper score to pull music from.  The music is as much a part of SW as any other element.  It wouldn't feel right to change it.

Your first statement is simply not true.  Countless final trailers feature music from different sources and not the movie directly.  There are even composers/companies out there who create scores just for trailers (ParodiFair, for example, though I'm unsure if they're still in the business).  The music of Star Wars is epic and is instantly recognizable as Star Wars in any context.  It just isn't an absolute necessity in EVERY modern Star Wars trailer.  Look at the trailers made for the defunct Star Wars: Reborn trilogy.  Not Star Wars, but very effective.

I'm thinking more along the lines of some obscure instrumental metal tracks, not a piece taken from another movie's score.  Hell, even a track culled from classical music would be nice.  Just not something easily recognizable, or beaten to death ("Carmina Burana" anyone? - I could live a long, healthy life without hearing that in a trailer ever again.)  Most of the epic Star Wars cues have already been use ad nauseam in the trailers already out there.

Obscurity is the key.  You cannot plunk down a Star Trek track or any other instantly recognizable track in the background of a Star Wars trailer.  That wouldn't sound right.  Something less known is needed to make the whole two minutes gel.

Ah, the hell with it.  I need to learn some video editing and I could show you what I mean.  Now to learn how to edit, that's the real trick, isn't it? :)

Or how about try something completely NEW for the new trailer?  Stay away from fade in titles ("Every saga has a beginning," etc.), keep it non-linear, maybe (just maybe) try some music OTHER than the Star Wars score?  It could work, but then again it coule be a complete mess.  As long as the framework is sound, the trailer could stand out as something special and not just ANOTHER Star Wars trailer.

I love movie trailers, but I'm just kinda sick of seeing the same structure, especially for Star Wars trailers.  I really do enjoy the teaser for "2012" that's beeing shown now.  It's very reminiscent of "The Shining" teaser back in the day and stands out as something relatively unique amongst the myriad of formulaic trailers out there.

Just itching for something fresh is all....

i probably won't be posting any more clips for a while. If i post too many then there will be no surprises left for the finished version. I will be putting together a new longer trailer that will be released on the same day as ESB's original release date in may whcih will feature a lot of new footage.

Sounds good to me.  Don't need to spoil all the surprises before the release.  And a new trailer should be sufficient indeed.

By the way, I can't wait to see what Adywan can do to improve / replace the dreadful 'Tie Fighters exploding in the asteroid crevice' shots!....

Agreed!  I brought that one up what seems like AGES ago now, and is probably the one FX shot I'm looking most forward to seeing fixed. :)

Fixed?  If I recall correctly, he said he was SCRAPPING the shot and making a whole new one.  Which is even better than fixing it!

Ah, semantics.  Scrapped, replaced, tweaked, improved, whatever word you want to use, in the end it's still gonna be FIXED! ;)

And, yes, replacing it altogether should be the definition of awesome! :)

Hey Ady,

I know you're knee deep (or possibly neck deep by now :) ) in ESB:R fixes right now, so I don't expect it any time soon, but, do you have an ETA on the ROTJ: SE AVC, or is it coming out post ESB:R?

To paraphrase the golden arches, and in regards to the all the work you've done on these HD releases: I'm effin' lovin' it! :)
