Info & Offer: ANH CBS Anniversary Airing w/ bumpers and commercials... for anyone?

I think you should definitely transfer the bumpers (and maybe the commercials?), and as much of the main feature as you have (including the botched trench run). Then someone who has the missing parts of the feature can combine their source with yours to generate a complete version. Shouldn't be too hard, especially since most of the feature has already been preserved on ocpmovie's Return Of The Ewok disc.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

I actually think that owning a 35mm print is illegal. Unless the laws have been changed here in the US, I think consumers are only allowed to own 8mm and 16mm prints. I remember hearing a story about how the actor Roddy McDowell had his home raided, and his collection of 35mm films confiscated.
Both of those things you just mentioned intrigued me greatly. Now I understand why so few 35mm films turn up for sale anywhere, and why nobody outside the industry seems to make transfers from them. And the story about Roddy McDowall is apparently true; I just looked it up and read about it with great interest. I suddenly feel a cameraderie for the late great Roddy that I never did before: he was one of us! Apparently he was very passionate about preserving lost films, or films in danger of being lost.

It's hard to imagine now that there was a time when Joe Citizen just could not own a film collection, no matter how much money he had. The only place you got to see a film was in the theater. Now, we all have our own film collections (on videotape, laserdisc and DVD) and it's no big thing.

A bunch of the actual documents involved in Roddy's story can be found here.

digitalfreaknyc:
Got DF001 and DF002 in my torrent queue right now - one is coming down fast, and the other is dead. But hopefully I'll have at least one to look at before long, to try to compare with Rikter's.

tb1971:
I had to delete DF003 from my hard drive after I burned it due to having less than 10 GB left. I can't seed more than one or two releases at a time right now (usually the ones I'm downloading) until I get a new hard drive, I'm afraid.

Young Indiana Jones... a preservation (* unfinished project *) - a mass of info & ideas
Time
I'd like to add my vote for Spleening them as well; I'm certainly eager to check them out. I've only seen maybe a couple of the episodes. I'd have bought them all on VHS, but it was getting to the point where I wasn't eager to spend any more money on a dying format (not to mention the expense involved to get them all). Of course, I'm eagerly awaiting their eventual release on DVD.

Until then, I'd love to see them Spleened. Plus, what are the odds they'll leave the bookends in on the DVD release?

Info & Help Wanted: [<( The Star Wars Trailers Project )>]
Time
Okay, I gave the audio a good listening and figured out what was what. These TV spots appear to be for the July 21, 1978 re-release of Star Wars. There are at least 7 of them, of which 4 are included (audio and video) on the official Bonus Materials DVD. However, the others we only have the audio for (thanks again, David!). Maybe someday the video will turn up as well. In the meantime, here's some details on the 7 spots:

Star Wars 1978 TV spots

Spot 1 "Farmboy" - 30 seconds:
Luke Skywalker was just a farmboy, until he received a mysterious message.
To rescue a beautiful princess.
And defend the forces of freedom against the Death Star.
The winner of 7 Academy Awards.
The legendary Star Wars.
Rated PG. Starts Friday at a theater near you.
(on Bonus Material DVD)
(also on Hyperspace, QuickTime format)

Spot 2 - 30 seconds:
This was how it all began.
Rated PG. Now playing/Starts tomorrow at a theater near you.
(audio only - David Morgands)

Spot 3 - "What If?" 30 seconds:
What if this were all happening right now?
What if Luke Skywalker were fighting against the Death Star?
And trying to rescue a princess?
What if you could go with them?
Well... you can.
Now/Tomorrow, at a theater near you: Star Wars, rated PG.
(on Bonus Material DVD)

Spot 4 - "Adventure" 30 seconds:
No legendary adventure of the past could be as exciting as Star Wars.
The more you see it, the better it gets.
Star Wars, rated PG. Now playing/Starts tomorrow at a theater near you.
(on Bonus Material DVD)

Spot 5 - 30 seconds:
Thrilling.
Beautiful.
Dangerous.
Adventurous.
And the more you see it, the better it gets.
Star Wars, rated PG. Now playing at a theater near you.
(audio only - David Morgands)

Spot 6 - "Forbidden Love" 30 seconds:
From the moment he saw her image, he had to find her.
Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
In danger. In love. In Star Wars.
No legendary adventure of the past could be as exciting as this romance of the future.
Star Wars, rated PG. Now playing/Starts tomorrow at a theater near you.
(on Bonus Material DVD)

Spot 7 - 30 seconds:
Every great story has excitement and danger.
Romance and adventure.
Villains and heroes.
No matter where it happens, no matter when.
But there's never been a story like Star Wars.
And you can see it all tomorrow at a theater near you.
Star Wars, rated PG.
(audio only - David Morgands)

Supposedly the KCCI version was taken from a broadcast beta tape. However, I've heard that is now in doubt and is probably a first or very second generation tape. Its supposed to be the highest quality tape available, but I'm not sure how it compares to the KCMO version specifically. However, it is avalable on myspleen, if you want to see it and compare.
The KCCI version is definitely the best, and it's remarkably better than the KCMO version. I have been in touch with the source of the master tape this was transferred from, and it apparently *is* a first generation recording from the original airing. Surprisingly, though, it's not actually Beta (as I had thought as well) but VHS, which makes the quality it's in even more amazing. This tape has been very well-preserved, and also very well-transferred by someone who knew what they were doing. And that's a stroke of luck for all of us.

The bottom line is this: the KCCI version supercedes all other versions I've ever seen (and I've seen quite a lot by now). It is hands-down the best quality you can get your hands on at present.

So, we know that Star Wars aired on TV in 1984 originally with the Mark Hamill intro and outro. I keep hearing people mention 1987, so was it aired again then for the 10th anniversary? Maybe it's only the 1987 airing that had the Flintstones, etc. in it? All the more reason to make a capture of that version if so.

I second that request for "Making Magic". I've been seeding what I have off and on for quite a long time now, but I haven't been able to get the whole thing. I have a particular interest in this project since I spent many hours finding a way to make the original CD run optimally under Windows XP (it can be rather difficult).

However, I do think it may have been somewhat incomplete. And I know for sure the Flintstones bit was not in it. But there definitely was some of the BTS stuff taken directly from "The Making Of Star Wars", though narrated by Mark.

A complete capture of the whole thing from start to finish is definitely worth pursuing.

You're absolutely right there. We really don't care about the color of Luke's underwear when much more pressing matters demand our attention. Like, are they boxers or briefs?

OT.com = TFN?
Time
Here's a look at it from my point of view:

At OT.com, there always seemed to me to be a big difference between the kinds of posts seen in the general SW discussion area and the kinds of posts seen in the actual SW projects area. In fact, for quite a while I didn't even bother to read the general discussion board, mainly due to time restraints and partly because it seemed a little more... juvenile at times (Doubt it? Just look at that locked topic up there entitled "Time To Grow Up" - why was that ever even necessary here?). Not to mention that its broader scope just didn't hit the mark for me most of the time. So my insulated view of OT.com from the preservation board made it seem less like TF.N style discussions and more like professionals discussing their work. And that has mostly been the case over there.

I've started posting more over here now that I have more time to do so, and also because I find it a better than average place on the net to have SW discussions. It still beats TF.N and other popular posting places... perhaps because there is a core group here who seem to have their head on straight and are very professional about everything they do, including casual posting.

Now it seems an influx of new people have come over from TF.N to join us here after their area was shut down. That's good by me, just as long as they respect the atmosphere of the place and keep things professional and polite (even if they didn't have to on TF.N). As long as that's the case, the more the merrier.

We're here because we have a job to do, as the title of the site suggests, and that is to defend, uphold, and preserve the original trilogy - and by the same token, all other related items that are in danger of being lost or forgotten.

(God, I can hear the patriotic music fading in and the flags beginning to wave right now...!)

That will be all. Now get to work, soldiers!

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
My lady and I watched the whole DVD last night and we both really enjoyed it. I had actually never even heard of The Thief and the Cobbler before this project, to my surprise, so it's all been new to me. I have to say it's now one of my favorite animated pieces of all time. I don't care for anime-style animation (can't stand it, actually) so this was quite a treat for me since it seems like everything traditionally animated these days is either anime or highly-influenced by anime. This film is unique. Some of the sequences are absolutely mind-blowing, especially when the Cobbler chases the Thief through the palace. What a fantastic piece of work, and what a difficult task it must have been to restore it to even this state.

I'm glad the trailer for Arabian Knight was included on there as well, as it gave me a chance to see how terrible that version was without having to actually watch it. I wanted to puke when Princess Yum Yum started singing that schmaltzy song, or when the Cobbler opened his stupidly animated mouth to say "I'm Tack!" It's like seeing the Mona Lisa "finished" with finger paints... the leaning Tower of Pisa straightened and turned into a McDonald's... the Star Wars trilogy "enhanced" with newly created digital--er, I think you know what I mean.

Consider me a new fan of the film. I'm sold. And now I must add my voice to the voices of those clamoring for a truly restored Director's Cut of the film in the future.

P.S. - regarding Roy Disney, as I understand it: yes he resigned from Disney in disgust in 2003, but more recently came back on board again after a successful campaign against Michael Eisner's handling of the company ended with Michael Eisner finally stepping down as CEO (hooray!), and changes being made on the board of directors. His return bodes well for fans of Disney's traditional animation, and he could be the best hope for seeing both a Thief and the Cobbler director's cut *and* the eventual release of Song of the South on DVD, among other things.

Info Wanted: <strong>Any SW Preservationists in the Pacific Northwest?</strong>
Time

I’m curious: how many of you Star Wars Preservationists out there live in the Pacific Northwest? Particularly in the Portland, Oregon and lower Washington area…

Basically, I’m looking for people in my area to collaborate with on various ongoing and future preservation projects. I’ve got a lot of ideas, a lot of drive, and a lot of resources to utilize, but I need to find others locally I can work with to really move things forward. Especially people with technical talent. I enjoy collaborating with my friends who live far away and will continue to do so, but sometimes I feel frustrated that we can’t just sit down at a desk somewhere and get some real work done, or go have a bite to eat somewhere while discussing our plans for particular projects. I’m hoping there are others near me who can relate.

Even beyond that, I’m also just interested in meeting up with people around here who are into this stuff.

Go ahead, drop me a line here or at ‘skot at hotmail dot com’ if you’d rather not post your location on the forum.

Preserving the...<em>cringe</em>...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time
The easiest way to figure out which version you have, generally, is by checking for the TV station ID logo which is usually shown during the cartoon. Here is a link showing the various known versions with their logos:

http://www.starwarsholidayspecial.com/versions.htm

The only one I know of so far that was broadcast in the US with no logo during the show was the WCBS one in New York. But if it has the newscaster breaks intact with the "fighting the frizzies" bit, the logo is shown there.

Hope that helps,

[&lt;( The Star Wars TV Commercials Project )&gt;] (* unfinished project * - a host of info)
Time
I still don't have the Vector Prime commercial. It was once on starwars.com here:

http://www.starwars.com/eu/lit/novel/1.html

...but now appears to be totally screwed up when you try to play it back. Not uncommon for the older videos on starwars.com - has anybody tried playing back some of the Lynne's Diaries from Episode I? They were converted from the original RealPlayer format to QuickTime when starwars.com converted over, and some of them now don't play at all. I think the same problem occurred with the Anatomy Of A Dewback documentaries.

Anyway, daveytod: write to me at 'skotk at hotmail dot com' and I'll get you a way to upload the Vector Prime thing to me.
